What DSLR camera bag has enough room to keep my battery pack attached?

I have a Canon Rebel T3i and an extended battery pack I want to keep on my camera. I tug and tug and tug to get it out of my current bag. (Some reason it goes in easily) A case logic, with a top opening to slide in the camera lens for separate keeping with my base. I typically keep a 18-200mm as my walk around lens, and would love to keep that attached as well. It's pretty much impossible to see if any cameras have battery packs on, in images provided while I online bag shop. Any bag I buy MUST be zip shut to keep out dust and dirt! Thank You!

Can I not bring my camera bag together and just put my dslr in a normal bag?

The temperature of the place im travelling to is about 10 degree celcius.

Will the cold temperature damage the camera lens or stg like that?

Im not a pro so I only have a dslr with one lens attached. I dont have any more extra lenses.

Thank you.

Answer
10 deg C isn't cold and won't cause any camera problems. In fact cooler temperatures are better for the sensor, or the image quality because it makes the sensor less noisy. Hot days make things worse in that respect.

You get most problems going from hot and humid to cold or cold to hot and humid as the camera can fog up up internally. If the temperature is reasonably constant there are generally few problems. Very cold (below zero) shortens battery life.

I'm in need of a wide angle lens. I plan on using it for ALOT of HDR landscapes. Is paying an extra $250 worth a 10-22mm ???
BTW, I only use Sigma and Canon lens =D
I have a Canon EOS 40D

Answer
Good points.

Another thing to consider is value. If you must buy your own equipment, remember that the lenses you get will probably be worth keeping for years, and have an opportunity to retain their value. Camera bodies however, get better every day, and your shiny new camera today will be long gone into antiquity tomorrow.

Speding a little more on good lenses is smart because they will serve you for a while, and pay you back some when you eventually sell. Because of this, the Canon lens will probably be cheaper in the long run, and is likely a better lens anyway.

Good luck.

I am using a Cannon 600D/T3i and when I record with it I get a lot of noise/hiss when recording in video mode. What can I do to reduce this without buying a mic or fixing in post production?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
I am shooting in manual focus. If I use the background noise reduction in Final cut pro X it does get rid of it but unfortunately it affects the rest of the audio.

Answer
If your lens has image stabilisation, make sure that is switched off too.

Have a new Camera, Canon 600D, could anyone give me a rundown of uploading HD video to PC, and good software?

Chris

Hey guys, I am a complete newbie with video editing software, how to not compress the quality, and how to get the best quality I can for making videos for YouTube, personal projects, etc... Can anyone give me a rundown of how to keep the quality, I plan to be shooting 720p at 60fps on this camera. Any good free software? Also, what are good specs to have on a computer for HD video editing? Thanks!

Answer
DSLR camcorders take video, yes they do, but they do it by interpolating the video file, which means the video you transfer from this device; about 80% of the content of that file did not come from the lens assembly on the DSLR, but rather from electronic circuitry within the camcorder. This occurs because of the way every DSLR that does not use MiniDV tape media, takes video. You turn these on, press record and the camcorder takes one frame from the camcorder lens assembly, then makes 4 or 5 frames from the electronic circuitry within the camcorder then another frame from the lens and 4 or 5 frames not from the lens, this goes on and on throughout your whole video. This means do not a point a DSLR at any moving thing, as the resulting video will be mostly unwatchable. Then blend in the fact, these cameras videos take pretty beefed up computer for editing and proper viewing.

I now have a 18-55mm and 300mm lens. Want one in between. What other acces. do I need ?

Answer
First off, your 300mm is pretty much not needed for weddings except possibly for an occasional unusual perspective. The 18-55 will be useful for candids and group shots, so that's fine.

Lighting in churches can be pretty bad and you may not be able to use flash, depending on the wishes of the couple and officiating clergy, so you should look at a fast standard zoom such as Canon's EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM. It's not cheap, but well worth the money when the light stinks. Your photos MUST be sharp, so consumer-quality zooms with variable aperture are a losing proposition. You will quickly find out that lens speed is worth the money.

Other things you probably need:
-- a top-quality flash such as Canon's 550EX with an external power supply. No one in the wedding party wants to wait while you change AA batteries. Down the line you may want to add a second flash, which is very useful for lighting setup shots and portraits.
-- a flash bracket and remote cord for the flash. Direct flash in the mark of the amateur.
-- a medium-weight tripod.
-- a relationship with a professional printer. The local Walgreen's won't cut it.
-- a second SLR body for the inevitable day your primary body dies during a wedding and to keep mounted with a second lens for quick shooting of candids. Your customers want photos, not excuses. If you can't afford it now, consider renting a second body on wedding days until you can afford another body. A one- or two-day rental is cheap insurance.

Those are the basics and more than you asked about. Good luck!

What lenses should I rent for my first wedding using a canon eos 60D?

Dash Dash

Im shooting my first wedding in October! Ill be shooting indoors but I dont plan on bringing a flash seeing as ive always used natural light in my photos. Ive never shot a wedding though as I stated before, and I dont really know what lenses to use with a 60D seeing as its not a full frame camera. The lens I use daily is the 50mm 1.8 and I planned on either taking that or renting the 1.4, So other then that, what other lenses should i look to get?

Answer
Tough to say, as a fast midrange zoom is usually best for weddings but most are only full frame. A 17-55mm f/2.8 IS would probably be the best for the job, and it is an EF-S lens so it won't weigh as much as a boat anchor.

If you can't do that, you will need a normal and perhaps a wide lens... like a 35mm or a 24mm. And if I was going to be carrying around and switching primes, I would rent another body too... most likely a 5D or 6D with a 35mm for group shots and keep the 50 1.8 on the 60D for close ups and portraits..... but a zoom will make it much easier for you and less annoying for your subjects.

Also make sure you have a speedlight with a diffuser. Though natural light is great, it is often too contrasty for good photos. Even a pop up fill flash will fill in shadows wonderfully and actually make it look more natural.

I am a photography student and I am looking for a good intermediate dslr camera. I am familiar with the Olympus E-PL1 and I have been shooting with the Pentax K-1000 for a year now. I am at that time in my studies were I am switching from film to digital and need a more professional camera. I am looking for a good overall camera that works well in most conditions. I would like to stay in the $1000 price range or lower. I have been looking at the Nikon D7000. Any thoughts?

Answer
Of course there are differences beyond ergonomics, Canon use old sensor technology, Nikon cripple their entry level DSLR cameras (doesn't apply to the D7000), both charge extra per lens for image stabilisation, Nikon charge extra for auto focus on their entry level models.

Why not the Pentax K5? All your Pentax lenses will work as designed, all will be image stabilised as it's built into the camera, it has functions not available on the Nikon, such as Tav mode where you set the aperture and shutter speed and the camera alters the ISO, multi frame up to 7 images in one frame both with and without exposure compensation, capture in focus is another function unique to Pentax and it uses the same sensor as the Nikon D7000, but the Pentax imaging engine gets slightly more out of it.

Compared here, I'm comparing them with a full frame Canon 5D Mk11

http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Cameras/Compare-Camera-Sensors/Compare-cameras-side-by-side/%28appareil1%29/676|0/%28brand%29/Pentax/%28appareil2%29/680|0/%28brand2%29/Nikon/%28appareil3%29/483|0/%28brand3%29/Canon

Chris

I will say that video is very much an afterthought with Pentax (not much better with Nikon - but some), but as a stills camera it can't be beat for low noise high ISO stills within it's price range, very nearly (and I really mean very nearly) as good as my Nikon D3s which is a full frame low pixel density camera specifically designed for low noise images in low light, at 4 times the price.

Which lens should I buy for my first DSLR camera?

Q. I am going to buy my very first DSLR camera in a few months. It's probably going to be a Nikon D90 or D7000. Problem is, I absolutely have no idea about lenses! I would really appreciate it if you can help me out a bit.

Answer
Normally the standard lenses that come with the cameras are good for beginners.
My Dad brought his first DSLR a few years back and the standard lens has seen more use than both the wide-angle and telephoto lens he purchased too.
My ex also brought a D90 last year and has only ever used the standard lens, which is quite decent.

A 'Nifty-fifty' (a 50mm fixed focal lens) is often brought by beginners, you can get use to taking photographs without relying on the zoom on the lens. These can start reasonably cheaply, and go way into the hundreds for a good one with a low f. stop.

Depending on what you want to do with your camera a wide-angle lens can be useful, there are several companies that make lenses designed to fit to Nikons and Canons, and are often much cheaper than the manufacturers own lenses (though, they may not be as to such a high quality)

Telephoto zoom lenses are good if you are interested in wildlife photography, or photography in which you are going to be a long distance from the subject. However, for a decent one of these you are looking at several hundred pounds, going into the thousands if you require a top - end one.

I would suggest sticking to the basic camera lens at the beginning and see how your photographs turn out. If you realise you like taking more wide-angle shots, then perhaps try a wide-angle lens, and vice-versa for the telephoto.

There are lots of different lenses out there, so I'm sure you'll have lots of fun!!

There are also places where you can hire camera equipment, so it can sometimes to 'try before you buy'. If you borrow a lens for a weekend, and decide you don't like it, it is much cheaper than buying a new lens and then realising.

What is a good lens to use for a SLR camera in low light such as a wedding reception?

best camera lens for low light image

Cincinnati

Anyone know a good lens to use for low light areas such as a wedding reception and indoor? What about in shade and woods areas?

Answer
You want a lens with a wide aperture like f/2.8.

Close in, you'd want something like a 17-55mm f/2.8 lens.

Further back, a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens (which is a telephoto zoom).

At a wedding reception, you can use flash usually, so another option would be to simply use a decent lens (even consumer level) and a hotshoe flash or a flash bracket with a cord and flash on the bracket. The flash will mean you don't have to shoot with the lens wide open and thus, you can use less expensive lenses.

What is the best dslr camera for low light?

ssgomezz

I am looking at refurbished, low end price dlsr cameras. I have used a pocket size Sony digital Cybershot for years and find I really need a better camera for low light. I take a lot of pictures indoors of animals (for cat and dog rescues). I have watched refurbished Canon, Nikon and Sony dslr cameras from 200$ to 400$ (their new prices were around 600$). I am stumped as to what is best for me-I don't need portability, and can work with any size hand grip. I just want a good camera for low light and some fast moving objects...and if I can use any of my current Sony cables etc, all the better.

Answer
The biggest part of DSLR cameras that are good for low light is usually the lens you have on it. Have a look at the aperture of the lens(es) you will be or looking at with the camera (usually seen as the f-stop). For low light, look at lenses around the 1.4 - 2.4 range.

The better the f-stop, the faster you will also be able to take the shot.

I like to take pictures of small thing cloes up. I recently got my first dslr and I love it. I got the canon T3. I really want to get a lens for macro shooting and would like to be a canon brand but i am not sure which one I should get. I am hoping for it not to be too expensive either.
thanks!

Answer
Make sure you get a true macro (1:1) lens. Some are branded as macro but only give 1:3 or 1:4 reproduction ratio. The longer the focal length macro you get, the bigger working distance between the lens & the subject, eg. a 50mm f2.8 macro will have a closer focusing distance than a 105mm f2.8 macro.

If you can't afford a Canon brand, Sigma make excellent 50mm and 105mm f2.8 macros. Here is a shot I did with the 50mm version;

Can a 100mm macro lens be used for landscape and family portraits?

fiber

I'm thinking of buying a 100mm Canon macro lens. But I also need a lens to take some family photos of 50 or so people (either wide angle or from far away). Can I use the same 100mm macro lens for both? Any pros/cons?

Answer
A 100mm macro lens on any Canon dSLR with an APS-C format sensor (any non-professional Canon digital SLR let's say) will have a crop factor of 1.6x. That means that a 100mm lens on a Canon EOS 300D Digital Rebel (just a random example) would actually be equivalent to a 160mm lens. In general, that focal length isn't going to be very useful for wide landscape photography or photos of large groups, but it would likely take very nice portraits of 1-3 people. That focal length is often considered part of the nice ranges of portrait lenses (around 85mm-180mm).

In a word though - "Nah" - that's not a good lens for both applications that you're interested in. Even at a straight 100mm you probably won't find an experienced photographer who will bless anything over, say, 35mm on the high end (no crop factor) for landscape/large group photos. On an APC-S sensor that would be about 17mm-18mm, which is quite common on zoom lenses now.

What is a used Canon 30D with a sigma 370-300 zoom, and a 28-70mm zoom, and a standard 18-55mm lens worth? With a hard case.

Answer
Depends on how much the 30D has been used. Brand new, no shutter actuations (0 pictures taken), it's worth maybe $1,000 with the kit lens. If you're looking to sell it online, you need have an estimate of how many pictures have been taken with it, because people won't buy a camera sight unseen if they don't know how far along it is in terms of shutter life.

The two Sigma lenses aren't worth much, $130 for the 28-70 and maybe $140 for the 70-300 if they're brand new and in pristine condition. Hard case, I don't know what kind/brand it is, but you probably won't get much unless it's a higher end case like a Pelican. You might have to just throw it in as a part of the deal.

Overall, brand spanking new, maybe $1,300, but I would expect less. The 40D was just released, so the market is being flooded with 30D bodies people are trying to offload, so I would say maybe expect in the neighborhood of $900-$1000, maybe $1100 tops.

What lens should I get with a Canon EOS 30D?

I want to buy the Canon EOS 30D but I have noo idea what lens to get with it.

I've read some things about the Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens, but does anyone know if this lens is good or not?

Or should I just get a lens kit that comes with the Canon EOS 30D camera?

Answer
Depends on your budget- I have both lenses and the kit lens is ok and certainly handy for wide angle shoots. The second lens is quite a bit more expensive but would be useful from wide to a nice portrait focal length. Its major advantage is that it has image stabilization and is good for lower light situations without flash. I was able to hand hold it maybe 3 stops slower without obvious signs of camera shake induced blur. It retails for about $500 or less. There is a new, faster lens in the same or approximately same zoom range that has a 2.8 constant aperture, but here we are talking approx. $1000.

i want answers frm amateur n professional photographers frm india preferably.if there s a better company please tell me. i'm more interested in the quality of pics and durability rather than a stylish digicam.

Answer
Since you are looking for quality of pictures, I will point you towards the SLR's. They are head and shoulders above the point and shoot cameras for quality of pictures. In the pronsumer-level market, I favor the Nikon D80.

The February 2007 issue of Popular Photography has an article where they compared the top 10 MP DSLR's. I took the scores and ranked the cameras similar to the way Formula 1 gives championship points. I just gave 5 for 1st place down to 1 for last place, splitting the difference when cameras tied in their catagories.

They evaluated Image Quality (giving this twice as much weight as anything else), Ease of Use, Control, and System Flexibility.

The final order and my scores are:

Nikon D80 - 17.5 points
- BEST in Image Quality, Control and System Flexibility
Canon Rebel XTi (400D) - 13.5 points
- Tied for best in System Flexibility
Pentax K10D - 11 points
- Tied for best in Ease of Use
Samsung GX10 - 11 points
- Tied for best in Ease of Use
Sony Alpha 100 - 7 points
- LAST in Image Quality, Ease of Use and System Flexibility."

Then again, this is the same magazine that put the Sony Alpha 100 dead last in this comparison named it the camera of the year in the previous issue! (In a follow-up to this seeming error, Pop Photo published the explanation that only the D80 and the Sony had been tested by the end-of-year deadline for choosing the Camera of the Year. Sony won on the strength of low price and built-in image stabilization. The other 3 that beat Sony in shoot-out were not tested until after the Camera of the Year was selected, because they were not yet available.)

Go to the original question and read the responses for more opinions.
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AiG00eHyd0oq5b.X7J.jiULzy6IX?qid=20070113133139AAHWJY0

If you want to get the "best" for the real world, consider the Nikon D200 or Canon 30D if you can afford it. For about $300-500 less, look at the results of the recent PopPhoto test and choose from that list according to your taste.

Personally, I use a Nikon D200 and would recommend it without hesitation to someone who has some knowledge of photography. For someone who wants the "best," but is starting with somewhat of an "entry level" knowledge base, I'd suggest the Nikon D80.

There are people out there who will state their preference for the Canon cameras and I will not argue with them. The Canon 30D and 400D are excellent cameras as well.

You would have to visit a camera store or camera department and pick them up and see what you think.

This review is now available online at:

http://www.popphoto.com/cameras/3569/10mp-dslr-shootout.html

Here's another reference from outside the photographic press. Consumer reports compared the Nikon D80, Canon Rebel XTi and Sony Alpha. Personally, I'd say that the Nikon came out on top here, also. It beats the Sony in "noise-free ISO" with an acceptable rating at ISO 1600 (kind of optimistic, I think...) compared to the Sony's ISO 400. It beats the Canon (in my opinion) by having a spot meter that the Canon does not offer.

http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/electronics-computers/news-electronics-computers/november-2006/shootout-10-megapixel-digital-slr-cameras-11-06/overview/0611_digital-slr-shoot-out.htm

Here's another comparison of interest:

http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/content/Canon-Rebel-XTi-vs-Nikon-D80-vs-Sony-Alpha-A100-Head-to-Head-to-Head-Digital-Camera-Review-.htm
[Note the navigation menu near the top of the review]

The next thing to consider is what lens to start with and where you go from there. If you are new to this, I'd say to just get the "kit" lens, which seems to be the 18-135 lens for the D80, and get started. Once you know where you really want to go with your photography, Nikon has an almost unlimited family of lenses to choose from.

Which is the best choice for an entry level photographer?

Mathanagop

Hi, friends out there. Can anyone please help me which DSLR should i go for?

SONY Alpha 200 or CANON EOS 1000.

Please have a look at my photographing need at
http://www.flickr.com/photos/mathan/

And tell me the PROS and CONS of both these models. And also the price of both in INDIA, esp CHENNAI please.

Answer
Since there are so few current lenses for the Sony, Canon would be the best choice here. Add to that, the vast number of "legacy" used lenses available for the Canon system (since 1988), you will increase your chances of building a Canon system faster for less money.

I have no knowledge of the cost of such cameras in India.

Comparing side by side.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_eos1000d,sony_dslra200&show=all

You will also see that the Sony attempts to use a image stabilization scheme that involves using the cameras sensor, a compromises since each focal length of a lens needs a different kind of compensation ... this is why the two companies who make professional grade DSLR's use specially designed elements in the lenses that will benefit the most using a kind of IS (called VR on Nikon lenses). In the case of both Nikon and Canon, the IS/VR can be shut-off to speed up the auto-focus under certain conditions.

I have a Canon T1i which came with an EF-S 55-250 lens and an EF-S 18-55. I would now like to add a couple of additional lenses. i currently have a sony digital camera with 4x optical zoom and 14.1 megapixels but i need a better one for like the shutter speed etc like the profeesional ones you find! and finally can you explain some of the features XD pwease

Answer
Get a DSLR. And seeing that you're using it for A level (did I read that correctly), you can do with an entry-range DSLR which would do pretty well compared to your Sony compact camera. Good examples would be Canon EOS 1100D or Nikon D3100, which are the most basic DSLRs of the brand. They're affordable. But if you can go a little higher, please do, especially if you want to continue in this field.

Main benefit would be, as you mentioned slightly, the control over shutter speed and aperture which is lacking in most compact cameras. This is pretty essential for good photos. Another feature which would be helpful in future would be the wide range of accessories and lens that you can equip your camera with, such as an external flash (speedlight) or a lens with greater zoom (maybe a telephoto lens) or special functions (e.g. tilt-shift, or fisheye - the extremely convex lens that allows you to take at exceptionally wide angles with this center-bulging effect known as fisheye effect)

There's a lot to learn, but get your basic kit first, and work up from there. It will be another series of adventures once you upgrade from a compact camera. All the best!

Answer
Have you considered a dSLR

Something like the Nikon D3100 goes for 27k, with the 18-55mm kit lens included
http://www.nikon.co.in/en_IN/product_details.page?DCRPath=templatedata/en_IN/saleable_product_information/data/Digital%20SLR%20Cameras/D3100.xml&CategoryID=gp11zkyo&currentTab=&currentLink=
& http://www.flipkart.com/nikon-d3100-slr/p/itmczc2ggnynxkft?pid=CAMCVYDJFGDFZJAG&ref=4fd00438-e91b-49a7-8df0-29dbec71ff43

Compare, http://www.dpreview.com/products/compare/side-by-side?products=nikon_d3100&products=canon_eos1100d&products=sony_slta37&products=nikon_d3200&products=nikon_d5100

It can do 1920x1080 video at 24 fps
Also checkout the Canon EOS 1100D, minus part is it can only do 1280x720 @ 30 fps
And if videos are a priority with you, the Sony SLT-A37 is the clear winner with 1920x1080 video at 60 fps

Do some reading and familiarize yourself
A dSLR is the ultimate photography tool

Ultimate selection you need to make, go to your local camera stores and handle the ones you shortlist
The one which best fits your hand, best suits your style ... that's it !!

Hi, i'm going to buy a dslr which one is best rated, best price, (above 18mega pixel) please give me your ideas.

I have a list of the top DSLR cameras available now:

http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&ref_=lp_281052_nr_n_1&bbn=281052&qid=1316690337&rnid=281052&rh=n%3A172282%2Cn%3A!493964%2Cn%3A502394%2Cn%3A281052%2Cn%3A3017941&_encoding=UTF8&tag=faumioew-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

Out of these i recommend Nikon D5100 16.2MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens:

http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-16-2MP-Digital-18-55mm-3-5-5-6/dp/B004V4IWKG/ref=sr_1_4?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1334672255&sr=1-4&tag=faumioe-20

Some of its features are:

- 3-inch, 921,000-dot Super-Density horizontal type Vari-Angle LCD Monitor
- In-camera Special Effects Mode
- In-camera HDR (High Dynamic Range)
- Stunning Full 1080p HD Movies with Full Time Autofocus

Hope this helps.

What Nikon DX format DSLR has the best noise performance currently?

daniel_uy2

mmm yeah the most popular Nikons right now is the D5100 and D7000. I have a D5000, still pretty good.

Answer
Nikon D5100:
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-D5100-Digital-18-55mm-3-5-5-6/dp/B004V4IWKG/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1329833622&sr=1-1&tag=faumioe-20

Nikon D7000:
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-D7000-DX-Format-Digital-18-105mm/dp/B0042X9LCO/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1329833639&sr=1-2&tag=faumioe-20

I recommend the Nikon D5100 16.2MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens out of the two. It has been ranked as number 1 in the top 100 DSLR cameras on amazon and it has the better noise Performance then the D7000.

How do I make my 28-135 canon lens wider?

best canon lens with zoom on ... on Zoom Lens And Full Hd 1080 Video By Sony Best Digital Camera Shop
best canon lens with zoom image

Fred Salis

I have an 18-55mm canon lens. I bought a new 28-135 lens, but I want to get it down to the 18mm range so I can get rid of the other lens. Is there a way to do this? Is there a wide angle lens that can drop this 10mm? It looks like a ton on ebay, but i'm afraid it would either kill my quality or give me a fish eye lens. Any help in the right direction would be appreciated!

Answer
You need to buy a 10-22 mm wide angle zoom

You really need to take at least one class in photography to understand why your question shows your lack of understanding of the fundamentals of photography.

You seem to be one of those people who are intelligent, but uninformed. A class will clear up a lot of misconceptions.

What is the difference between an 18-55 mm zoom lens and a 19-35 mm one?

Sherry R

These are both canon zoom lenses. One says CANON ZOOM LENS EF-S 18-55 mm 1:3.5-5.6 and the other says PHOENIX 19 - 35 mm 1:3.5 - 4.5 AF ZOOM 77.

Also, which is the best for photographing crime scenes and evidence? Thanks!

Answer
one goes from 18-55 and the other from 19-35

the canon one is probably better quality and more expensive...

What kind of lens should i use for skate video's on my t2i?

best canon 24mm lens on Best Canon lenses - 24mm - 105mm f4L IS USM Canon lens review
best canon 24mm lens image

cole c

I have a canon T2i, and the lens i have with it is a canon 50 mm 1.8. I want to start filming skate video's but the 1.8 has too much depth of field. I need a wide angle lens like the tokina 11-16 mm. But is very expensive, so i was wondering about the Canon 24mm f2.8. Should i get it or just go all out and get the tokina?

Answer
If you want to use DoF to isolate your subject from the background the 50mm f/1.8 will do a better job than the wide angle lenses. You need to consider hyperfocal distance http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/hyperfocal-distance.htm .

What is the difference between these two lenses?

WeAreOne

What are the differences between these two wide angle lenses? Im looking at:
a canon EF 24mm f/2.8 wide angle lens and a canon EF 35mm f/2 wide angle lens?
I am an amateur photographer and all my knowledge is self-taught, and I was wondering what the difference in the mm means and also the f stops?
And which one would you consider a greater performance to price ration, which one is the better wide angle lens?
Thanks all, sorry for the many questions.

Answer
it all depends on how you intend to use it.
What camera are you using it for?

I think of it in this way. The "MM" dictates how you might want to use it. the "f stop" will tell you how much light you need.

the 24mm, is wider. You can step closer. You'll see more than the 35mm. 24mm is often used for group portraits or landscapes. (Especially if you are shooting on a full frame camera; On a smaller format camera, it won't be very wide with the 1.6 crop factor) On a smaller format camera, the 35mm will not be wide.
However, for landscapes, I like to recommend the Canon 10-22mm EF-S lens. If you have the fullframe, the 16-35mm f/2.8 is a great performer, if you can afford it.

The f stops tell you how much light you need. Both lenses are very fast lenses. Just the 35mm f/2 is a little faster (by one stop). What this means is that, when the f/2.8 needs 1/120 seconds to produce the picture. The f/2 can do it in 1/250 seconds. If the f/2 needs 1/30 seconds to make the desired exposure, the f/2.8 needs 1/60.
When some people take pictures indoors in low light; this is very very important. It is also why some people spend a lot of money to purchase a f/1.0.
If you are shooting landscapes, such fast lenses are unneccessary, and dead weight.

What to do now?
- always get the best lens you can afford.
- both these are good lenses. decide how you want to use it.
- in what situations will i need it? low light? out door landscapes?
- try both lenses, see what you see through the viewfinder. Does it fit those needs?

best canon 7d lens for portraits image

hmm

I just bought a Canon 7D and I don't know anything about photography at this point but want to learn. I don't know what lenses to buy and am a bit overwhelmed. I want to do inside and outdoor portrait photography. Not focusing on motion. I also am interested in outdoor photography, landscapes, and architecture. I am most interested in day time photography too (although a lens that is good in different levels of light would be nice). THANK YOU for your help!

Answer
Use the lens that came with your camera until you know enough about photography to pick a lens yourself.
