Canon Lens Question?

t _la

I currently have a Canon Digital Rebel XT with:
-The standard 18-55mm lens
-Canon EF 55-200 f/4.5-5.6

Question:
- s it worth it to get BOTH the Canon EF 70-200 f/4 IS USM AND a Quantaray 18-200 f/3.5-6.3 OS lens?
- Should i get one or the other?
- If neither, is there a lens to get for under $1000 that would complement my current set?

I take photos for the school newspaper, sports games, and family functions.

thanks so much
What about as upgrades for the old ones?

Answer
Your current lenses cover virtually the same zoom range as the lenses you are looking at. They really don't complement your existing lenses at all, but are essentially potential replacements. Let's see, the Quantaray lens is $530 and the Canon is $1229. That's a total of $1759, a lot of money.

If I had to choose what lenses to get for you, and presuming you're on a budget of under $1000...
I'd get this one to replace your standard 18-55mm lens:
Tamron SP AF17-50MM F/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical Lens.

Why? For the low light capability and wide aperture. It'll do much better than your current standard lens in that regard.

If you want the 70-200 f/4 IS USM, then I think that's a much better lens than the 55-200 (which I would get rid of and sell) and you should get it if you can afford it.

The only reason to get the Quantaray lens would be if you need a 1 lens solution, where you can only carry one lens and need to cover a lot of focal lengths. Otherwise, it's not as good a choice as getting lenses with more narrow focal lengths and wider apertures.

Lens selection can be tough--you should always evaluate your needs and decide which lenses will accomplish what you want.

Canon t3i lens?????????

Damien

I purchased this camera yesterday and it came with a 18-55mm lens. It cost me 750 dollars. I am thinking of returning it and exchanging it for a canon t3i but the lens will be 55-250 mm for 950 dollars. What's the best deal? I am a amateur @ this. This is my first dslr. What is the difference in the lens? What makes a lens better then others? TY

Answer
Don't waste your time, the shop's time and your money.
Just buy the Canon EF-S 55-250 f/4-5.6 IS that you will find for under $200

eg
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-55-250mm-4-5-6-Stabilizer-Telephoto/dp/B000V9D5LG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1343117404&sr=8-2&keywords=canon+55-250

That way you have a T3i with both lenses for $920.
BTW the 55-250 is a great lens but is way too long for many purposes. I have this lens and it is used for maybe 10-15% of my shots.

nikon d3000 lens help?

im looking in buying a nikon d3000 but i would like to know if my nikon af nikkor spectrum7 70-210mm lens will fit on the camera and will the camera auto focus it? plzz help me out thanks

Answer
Nikon D3000 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002JCSV5I?ie=UTF8&tag=track-yahoo-answers-20

Review: Outstanding Starter Camera.
Looking over several cameras and choosing one for someone who has outgrown point and shoots, I came back to the Nikon D3000. By no means will this model blow away the seasoned photographer, however it does cover the basics and more. We picked it up and tried it out over the weekend.

First time DSLR users will enjoy the Guide Mode. It literally walked us through different shoot scenarios via the fixed 3" LCD screen. An excellent tool, its step by step instructions allowed my niece to move from the operating booklet in no time. After a few more runs, I am sure that she will feel quite comfortable shooting in the manual mode. The quick shutter release was a nice surprise.

Upon completing two days of shooting with the Nikon D3000, I walked away impressed. In manual mode, indoor shots were a balanced and perfect mix of shadow and color. As usual with shooting in low light, noise will make an appearance. However this system can be tweaked to deliver some outstanding indoor photographs. The bottom line is proper settings.

A basic fix is the VR (Vibration Reduction) feature located on the lens. This should be activated, especially indoors. A tripod will certainly help. In auto mode, just set the camera to night portrait and sit back and enjoy the rest of your flight.

Outdoor shots were vibrant, sharp and rich in color without editing. The onboard flash system was more than capable in meeting fill flash requirements. Without a doubt the overall performance of the camera, features and image quality is excellent.

With 10.2 megapixels to work with, I easily blew up a personal favorite my niece had taken to 16" x 20". Even though I don't see myself trading in my Nikon D300 for this model anytime soon, this camera is by far an upgrade over any of the souped up point and shoots out there.

Its easy to see that the real jewel in this model is the auto focus system. With six auto mode settings (Landscape, Sports, Child, Closeups, Portrait, and Night Portrait) each and every photograph can be a keeper. Onboard editing tweakers won't be disappointed with this model. It covers the basics. The D3000 operates with both SD & SDHC cards.

The Nikon D3000 is paired with a Nikkor 18-55mm AF-S DX lens. It will operate with any Nikkor DX and AF-S lens. Older Nikkor or similar AF lens is a no go when shooting in auto but will function in manual mode. Since this model is not fitted with the built in optical image stabilizer, I recommend switching on the Vibration Reduction (VR) feature located on the lens. Still the best anti vibration tool is a tripod.

Nikon makes it really simple with a thumb dial for tweaking aperture and shutter speed. Metering, focus modes, and exposure compensation are easily controlled via the menu. The D3000 does not shoot in video mode. This model easily shoots over three frames per second in continuous mode. The 3D tracking sensor operates quite well in low lighting.

The Nikon D3000 camera kit comes packaged with a EN/EL3e Li-ion battery, charger, USB cable, video cable. strap, eye cap, eye cup, software CD-ROM, 18-55mm Nikkor lens, lens cap, instruction booklet and a one year Nikon warranty.

Coming out of the gate, I still find this model a little pricey for a basic DSLR. I am sure heading into the fall and holidays buyers will begin to see a noticeable price drop. Even so, the D3000 is a fine tuned replacement for the immensely popular entry level Nikon D40. Newcomers to the DSLR community will certainly enjoy this outstanding alternative.

Hey All!

M a newbie in Dslr world..Plannin to buy Canon 450D in a time of one week as m goin on a Europe and UK tour!M just buyin it for a hobby..!

.But not sure abt d lense...Cud u guide me as to Which 1 shud i go for?Am i making a right choice buy selecting this model?

My budget is around INR 40,000 thats almost 813 USD.

Thanx!

Answer
The 450D is a great camera. $813 should buy you the body and a 18-55mm lens with some cash left over for a flash unit. Unless your happy with the kit lens' rather limited reach, then prepare to make some other purchases. A better option is just to skip on the 18-55 and get a 18-200mm. It covers all the focal ranges most people would ever want. However, the body and the lens will go over your budget. Unless you want to save up, another good option is just get a Nikon D40 with a 18-200mm.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens?

Jin

Is this a good lens for everyday use? I have a canon 50D can i use it with my 500D? i mean especially at night with very low lighting situation or taking pictures of a person in a small room or taking portrait?
here is the link for the lens

Answer
If you are a portrait photographer, then yes it can be used daily.

If you are asking about using it for a variety of general shots from landscapes, group shots, single full body shots and head and shoulder shots, then no ... on your lens it can be used as a portrait lens (medium telephoto).

The best inexpensive "general every day" lens would most likely be the Canon 18-55 mm IS or if you can afford it, both the amazing 10-22 mm and 24-70 mm f/2.8 lens

What new camera lens should I purchase?

Jessica L

Hi!

I am looking into purchasing a new camera lens for my Canon 5D, and my Canon 50D. I am wanting to purchase something for portraits that will give me the most crisp & clear images possible!

Much thanks in advance!

Answer
You will notice that Freak did not mention any EF-S lenses in the group of suggested lenses. That is because using an EF-S lens on a 5D will damage it, and although a EF-S lens will work just fine on a 50D, it makes more sense to buy only EF lenses

all SLR cameras lens i want to understand?

XDXD

i want to know if all SLR brands can be used the same lens or different ones etc. like a Nikon lens on a canon camera or vice visa or other brands
thats A LOT of money you think anyone has made an extra extension to be place on lets say a canon camera and the extension is allowed to have any lens? because that would be very interesting product to buy

Answer
All camera manufacturers use a proprietary lens mount. Canon lenses for Canon, Nikon lenses for Nikon, Sony lenses for Sony, Penax lenses for Pentax, Olympus lenses for Olympus. The exceptions are Samsung and Fuji. Fuji DSLRs are built using a Nikon chassis and lens mount. Samsung DSLRs are built using a Pentax chassis and lens mount. Sony uses the Minolta Maxxum A-mount that dates back to 1985.

There are adapters that allow you to use a Nikon lens on a Canon or a Minolta SR (manual focus) mount lens on a Sony or Canon or Pentax or Olympus. The problem with adapters is that you have to use the lens in stop-down metering and manual focus. (Each camera requires a separate adapter).

The Tamron "Adaptall" adapters use the M42 screw mount on the lens and an adapter designed for each camera body. With it you could have a Pentax body and a Canon body and use the same lens on both cameras.

Minolta SR mount 250mm mirror lenses go for a premium on eBay and the word is they are being retrofitted with a Nikon mount. I've also seen a couple of SR mount lenses that have had the mount modified to mount to the Sony DSLR, supposedly with full metering.

All in all its still best to buy lenses designed for your camera.

Are camera lens fittings all the same?

vivalazhon

i have an old minolta SLR camera with a few different lenses... i want to get a new digital SLR.... are the lens fittings standard, or would i need to buy another minolta?

Answer
All camera manufacturers use a proprietary lens mount. Therefore, a Canon lens will not mount on a Nikon or Olympus or Sony or Pentax body and their lenses will not mount on any other body. There are adapters that allow you to use a Sony lens on a Canon or Olympus but you lose a lot of the features like metering and auto focus. The one exception is the Fujifilm DSLR line which uses a Nikon lens mount.

When Minolta introduced the world's first full-featured Auto Focus 35mm SLR in 1985 they changed their lens mount from the MC/MD bayonet mount to the A-mount. After the Konica-Minolta merger, Sony bought the DSLR technology from K-M and is still using the A-mount.

If your lenses are from the SRT or X series of Minolta cameras (MC/MD bayonet mount) then you will need an adapter to use them on a Sony or Canon or Olympus DSLR. If you have an old Minolta Maxxum then they can be used on any Sony DSLR.

What is the quality difference between a compact interchangeable-lense camera (like a sony NEX) and a DSLR?

Ashok C

I'm thinking about buying a new camera sometime soon. I really like the Nikon D3100 (or the D3000 to save a few bucks) but I want to understand the difference between a full DSLR and one of the newer compact, interchangeable lense cameras like the Sony NEX before I make a decision - I was told by someone I know that the NEX3 smashes entry-DSLRs in image quality, is that true? What else should I know before deciding? RIght now I have a Canon Powershot and I leave the dial on manual shot all the time, I love my friends' DSLRs for their image quality and the simple manual focus.
Again, I haven't used the auto mode on my powershot (I use full manual) for as long as I can remember - which one of these do I want to spring for?

Answer
Go for Nikon D3100 14.2MP Digital SLR Camera
* 14.2-megapixel DX-format CMOS image sensor;
* 3-inch monitor with One-Touch Live View shooting and movie capture
* Full 1080p HD Cinematic Video with full-time autofocus and sound

what is the best camera that isnt a dslr for a photographer?

Elias W

I understand that a dslr camera is highly suggested, but i dont plan to pay that much money (no more than $300) for one of those kind of cameras just yet.Would the samsung nv20 be a good choice of a camera?

Answer
The Samsung NV20 is a fine P&S camera and you should enjoy it as you play with your friends and family, however by definition, a photographer uses adjustable cameras for complete control of the resulting images.

Buying a fully automatic P&S camera, decidedly places you into a camera "user" category, rather than as a photographer.

That said, much creativity can come from a P&S camera, but eventually the frustration of missed shots due to design restrictions, shutter lag, being stuck with one lens, the tiny sensor and red-eye issues will eventually cause you to move toward an entry level DSLR and a passion for learning how to control such a camera.

What is the best digital SLR camera or Interchangeable lens camera?

David

I'm a beginner looking into some cameras. I want a camera that has a lot of room to grow with and isn't necessarily the most expensive nor the cheapest on the market. I am also stuck in between getting a DSLR or Interchangeable lens camera. I'm looking at the Sony NEX 5N, NEX 7, Nikon V1, among some other Nikon and Canon DSLR cameras.

Answer
The "best"? Nikon D4 or Canon 1D X

The best entry level dSLR would be the Nikon D3200 or Canon 1100D

If you want a smaller camera with interchangeable lenses then the Nikon V1 would be better than the J1

How do I record videos using the camera on my laptop?

Crosswalk7

I don't have a webcam device, but I can see I have a small camera lens at the top of my PC and I want to use it to record videos of myself talking. Is there a way for me to do that? Do I have to download some type of software? I have Windows 7, by the way (if that helps).

Answer
Hello, Many users have problems with web cams. Press the designated button to turn on your camera. If you are using an external camera, use a compatible USB cable to connect the camera to the USB port of your computer.

Visit a website that allows you to test your webcam online. An example of a site you can use include http://www.ehow.com/how_8443971_test-webcam-online.html
Next try this.
Click the "Allow" button from the flash player settings window. You should now see live video footage from your web camera. If you don't see live video, your web camera is not working properly.
To reinstall the drivers try this. Right click on My Computer-> Properties -> Device manager -> Imaging Devices -? Webcam. Right click on the webcam and uninstall it. This will cause the computer to reinstall the drivers and software. Restart the computer and hopefully your problem will be fixed.
Here are a list of sites that will help

The 500D is lighter, but it would not make much difference.
Although the Canon has 3 extra MP that really isn't such a big jump.
I like Nikon because flexible screen and 4fps continuous shooting.

What would be the best canon macro lens to buy?

Grace

I have a canon 500d body. And i want to buy a canon macro lens. Wanting to take photos of real close ups of flowers, insects, nature life. What should lens should i get??

Answer
I couldn't afford the Canon lens, so I bought the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro, instead.

I love it! It is tack sharp, makes a nice "normal" lens, too, and the 105mm lets me stay away from the bugs a little further.
The only downside is that in macro, sometimes the auto focus does too much "hunting", but even that isn't an issue since I normally use manual focus for macros, anyway.
For extra close macros, I add my Kenko extension tubes.

Can a 100mm macro lens be used for landscape and family portraits?

best canon lens landscape on canon20
best canon lens landscape image

fiber

I'm thinking of buying a 100mm Canon macro lens. But I also need a lens to take some family photos of 50 or so people (either wide angle or from far away). Can I use the same 100mm macro lens for both? Any pros/cons?

Answer
A 100mm macro lens on any Canon dSLR with an APS-C format sensor (any non-professional Canon digital SLR let's say) will have a crop factor of 1.6x. That means that a 100mm lens on a Canon EOS 300D Digital Rebel (just a random example) would actually be equivalent to a 160mm lens. In general, that focal length isn't going to be very useful for wide landscape photography or photos of large groups, but it would likely take very nice portraits of 1-3 people. That focal length is often considered part of the nice ranges of portrait lenses (around 85mm-180mm).

In a word though - "Nah" - that's not a good lens for both applications that you're interested in. Even at a straight 100mm you probably won't find an experienced photographer who will bless anything over, say, 35mm on the high end (no crop factor) for landscape/large group photos. On an APC-S sensor that would be about 17mm-18mm, which is quite common on zoom lenses now.

What lens should I buy for my canon DSLR camera?

just a gir

I only have the canon 18-55mm lens that came with the camera but I want to get another one. What size in mm would you recommend?

Answer
The correct answer depends on the type of photography you want to do. Are you planing on doing Macro, Portrait, Landscape, Sports ... thing about this and it will point out to the best lens available for what you see yourself shooting in the future.

where and how to start as a wedding photographer?

best camera lens wedding photography on Best Tamron Lenses For Wedding Photography
best camera lens wedding photography image

Monica M

So here is the deal, I consider myself as an intermediate photographer. I'm a graphic designer and learnt photography in college (2 courses of ph) . Since then (2007) I got a Nikon D40 which I still own. For bad financial decisions I just haven't been able since then to upgrade my camera. I know it's not about "cameras" but "photographers" what matters and i try repeating that to myself everytime i see so many limitations on my gear but honestly it starts getting annoying because the focusing is not so good so it makes me lose many shots and as my primary business is baby photography is not very easy to keep on manual focusing . Also I shot my bro's wedding and it gave me lots of troubles in poor light conditions (horrible noise at high iso, and other troubles even with a 50mm f1.8 lens)

SO, the thing is I've been trying to get into the business of wedding photography, i feel i can do it but i just can't seem to get any customers! many people ask me prices, my ranges are between $250-700 which i think is ok for my market (i already did some research of similar photographers' prices).

However, what i was wondering is that everybody started somewhere. I started by calling out "casting" baby models on my fb fanpage and that is how i started with children photography and people know me for that. the thing is i like weddings also and i think they can give me better profits than children ph. I wonder how other wedding photographers started out... i mean it's like a vicious circle: no one hires you because you don't have enough portfolio on weddings, you don't have a big protfolio because no one hires you!! So, how did others started?? I would really appreciate helpful answers specially from actual wedding photographers... did you do one or 2 for free to start a good portfolio?? I have so many ideas and things, but i think my social circle is not so good, i don't have many contacts.. i've seen others in my city doing that some are good, some aren't, but even them get customers... because they have a wide portfolio to show!

I need to know if it is a good marketing strategy to do some contest on my fb fanpage to get a wedding photoshoot or if it is not.. or how on earth to start, to get some nice couple to trust me and let me do their wedding?? I'm trying my best, but everyday i notice photography is an expensive profession, you need gear, you need lots of props, stages, backgrounds... i have bought some through the years but i feel it is not enough... anyway, sorry for adding to much to it.. i think i'm going through some dissapointment moment... hope you guys can help with some advices.. you can check out my webpage at www.moma-studio.com

thanks
thanks for the answers but what i need to know is in fact how some wedding photographers started.. did they shoot 1 or 2 weddings for free first? i'm not a total newbie on this, what i need is to get more for my portfolio.. please guys check these pictures i've taken and judge.. are they just ok or they are in the road to make me become a pro on this? thanks. http://www.momastudiofotografia.com/#!bodas-y-eventos/c117c

Answer
You have some major issues to over come. You stated " i see so many limitations on my gear but honestly it starts getting annoying because the focusing is not so good so it makes me lose many shots". If you are having problems with your gear, and you are not upgrading it, then you are not ready to be a wedding photographer!

Wedding photography in not to be trifled with, either you are serious about it, and are willing to put in the time to learn, and finances for good equipment or you are not. There is not in-between. You are capturing precious moments in a couple's life that cannot be re-created. There are no second chances to get the right.

You will need the proper equipment and backup equipment just in case a camera, lens or flash fails. You need to have insurance and contracts stating exactly what service you are offering. You need to be able to produce professional results quickly with each click of the camera. You have to know your gear inside out, and know how to get the best possible shots in whatever lighting that may present itself.

Take Perki88's advice and be a second shooter with a seasoned pro for a year or two before trying to go on your own. You will learn how to compose good shots, what to shoot, what the minimum equipment needed is, including cameras, lenses, flashes, remotes, etc. You will learn how to shoot under many different lighting conditions and how to properly edit the photographs to make them their very best. Weddings can be very fast paced, extremely demanding on the photographer. It is not something you want to do without prior knowledge and experience.

Looking at your current wedding images, many of them are soft and have a lot of noise, some are the best images, like http://static.wix.com/media/cd9b4d_b92b41c8ab9244a125fb969af392f1a9.jpg_srz_578_885_85_22_0.50_1.20_0.00_jpg_srz where the groom's face is totally blocked by the brides bouquet.

The noise is this one http://static.wix.com/media/cd9b4d_214487e56e56847af024611206b17c06.jpg_srz_1239_885_85_22_0.50_1.20_0.00_jpg_srz just ruins the photograph. This one is really bad: http://static.wix.com/media/cd9b4d_5f888edc54c199c4a9ec75e087ccd797.jpg_srz_1325_885_85_22_0.50_1.20_0.00_jpg_srz

Best wishes.

What is the best lens and flash for wedding photograph?

Elizabeth

I'm looking for an Nikon (only!) lens and flash good for wedding photography. Thanks! =)

Answer
You need a fast zoom with a constant f/2.8. The pretty much standard is the Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8. I've heard good things about the Tokina 12-24mm f/4, but it is a bit slower. You need a moderate telephoto, either zoom 70-300 or a prime, the 85 is heartily recommended. for portraits. You will use the WA for groups and the reception, and the tele for portraits and the ceremony when you are at the back. For really low light, the 50mm f/1.4 or the f/1.8 are hard to beat. You need a SB800 flash, or you can use the SB600 as well, but not as much power. Don't forget the second camera body. You'll need a diffuser of some sort, a bounce card, possible a flash bracket and synch cord.

How can I clean my iPhone camera lens?

best camera lens cleaning kit on ... Lens + 52mm 3 Piece Professional Filter Kit + Lens & Camera Cleaning
best camera lens cleaning kit image

x3rae

When I first got my iPhone in May it took amazing pictures, but now months later, the pictures aren't turning out so great. I personally think my camera lens is dirty or something. Does anyone know how I can clean it?

Answer
I would use a cotton swab like the kind you use to clean your ears, dip it in some isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, and clean the lens with it.

I need a good point and shoot camera cleaning kit.?

ZenTurkey

I have a Lumix DMC-ZS3 and a Canon Powershot SX110IS that I need a good cleaning kit for. Most of the kits I find look very cheap. I've heard bad kits can leave lint on the lens or scratch the lens so I wouldn't mind spending a little extra to get a decent one that will clean both of these.

Answer
My opinion, you don't need a "kit". All you do need is a high quality micro fiber lens cloth. You should never, ever apply any kind of liquid to a lens.

One thing I do is carry a large size women's make up brush in my bag. The brush is very soft and is excellent for quick dust offs during or after a shoot. My micro fiber I use for the screens and for the outer filter.

What are the best canon lenses for portrait and landscape photography?

I have a canon digital rebel xt that i received as a Christmas present. I'd like to take professional looking portraits of my baby and family, whats the best lens for this? I'd also like to buy a good lens for landscape photography. Any suggestions?

Answer
If you understand the fundamentals of photography you will know the lens that best fits your needs. The fundamentals are not really rocket science, to really really use an SLR/DSLR like the XT you need to know how to get the max out of it.

For example: If by landscape you mean like a sunset or a sort of mountain/lake scenery you will need a deep depth of field (DOF) and you need to know what DOF means and how you can very easily change that on your XT (you do this by changing the aperture of your lens in the the Aperture Priority (Av) or Manual mode (M) mode). Similarly for babies you want a shallow DOF and you do this since the baby is the focus of your pic and you want the background blurred.

But by changing the aperture you also mess with the amount of light thats entering the camera and that affects the shutter speed etc.

Its not that hard, once you understand the fundamentals you will know EXACTLY what kind of lens you need. For starter I suggest:

1) Get a good photography teacher or a good easy to read photography book. I recommend "Understanding Exposure" it has lots of pics that explains what the terms means visually. IMO its the BEST $15 you will ever spend in your photography hobby. You will understanding what makes up an Exposure-Aperture, Shutter and ISO.

2) Once you know that, when you read your Camera manual it will make a lot of sense.

3) For beginner portraits the best lens is the $75 EF 50mm f/1.8. This is a prime lens (it does not zoom you zoom in and out with your feet) and it a fast lens (any lens with an aperture more than f/2.8 is called fast, since it usually yields fast shutter speeds) and bigger the aperture f/1.4, f/1.8, f/2.0, f/2.8 even f/4 the shallower the DOF and the more blurred the background is.

Note: In photography f/2.8 is smaller than f/2, which is smaller than f/1.8. This is because it is a ratio, so f/1.8 is large coz it lets in MORE light than say f/2.8. It's confusing now but will make a lot of sense once you get the fundamentals.

I am assuming your camera came with a EF-S 18-55mm kit lens. This is a moderately Wide Angle Zoom lens and its really good for landscapes and close people shots. If you do 1-3 as listed above you will figure out what your favorite focal length is for shooting and what you really need.

I could easily tell you to get a $640 EF-S 10-22 mm lens for wide angle landscapes or a $300 EF 50mm f/1.4 for portraits but you need to know WHY they cost that much and how to use them first to justify the cost. There is a reason why good lens cost a LOT of money and you need to understand photography to understand their cost and how to get the most from them.

What kind of camera would be good for landscape photography?

Exile

I am interested in getting into some landscape photography. However I know nothing about it, cameras, or photography in general. So I need some help finding a camera that will let me get into this.

I am trying to avoid breaking 250 dollars, so that would be my upper limit, and I would really like to be able to switch out the lenses also if that is possible.

Any tips on this hobby would also be great.

Thanks for helping

Answer
You will need a camera with a wide angle lens.

The cameras that can use interchangeable lenses cost about $700 at the entry level, plus the cost of a good lens like the 10-24 mm wide angle zoom

For $250 you will have to buy a P&S camera which has a good wide angle focal length at the wide end of the optical zoom,.

Look here for such cameras.

The safest way is with bottled water and the same lens cleaning cloths you get from the places that sell eyeglasses.

What does it mean when a camera lens has a fixed aperture?

Danny

I'm looking into buying a bigger camera lens, and I keep on seeing lenses that have a fixed aperture and some that don't. What does that even mean?

Answer
First you need to understand what aperture is: It is the ratio of the length of the lens to the diameter of the lens- thus the larger the aperture (the smaller the number, the larger the aperture) the more light will pass through the lens. This means faster shutter times are possible since more light comes through the lens.

Now, in zoom lenses keeping this ration constant, a "Fixed Aperture", requires very specialised engineering which makes the lens more expensive. However such a lens is far better in low light conditions and tends to be much better engineered than one with a variable aperture/ With a variable aperture as you extend the zoom the aperture gets smaller and less light gets through the lens. This means exposure, shutter speeds etc need to change as you change the zoom on the lens- making using the lens more difficult as you have to vary settings more frequently.
