What is the difference in sony DSC-HX100 and SLT-A33L?

time

They have same price tag. But DSC has 30X zoom and SLT has no zoom what this means which one should I buy?

Answer
The last time I looked, the Sony A33 was a bit more expensive that the HX100.

You are comparing two totally different cameras. The HX100 is what's called a superzoom, or megazoom camera. Sometimes even the term 'bridge camera' is used, but I despise the term.

Superzooms camera are at their core, are compact cameras with a large lens attached, and usually some extra controls and options. They have the same small image sensor packed with too many pixels, and the same poor image quality as a compact.

The Sony A33 is a dSLT camera (nearly identical to a dSLR) and has no zoom because there is no lens permanently attached to the camera. dSLRs and dSLTs never have 'zoom' numbers attached to them for this reason. The A33 crushes the HX100 in just about every single way but one.

You'll never have the zoom factor in the A33 because of the large image sensor. Cameras like the HX100 with its small image sensor can pack a lot of zoom in a smaller lens. The larger image sensor requires a larger lens to get the same reach, that's why you see pro photographers at football games with those massive white zoom lenses that cost a small fortune.

What people don't know is that a cheap superzoom camera with a 15x has more reach than that super long dSLR lens, it's only that large to make up for the larger image sensor. Of course the dSLR image quality is better by leaps and bounds.

So what do you want? for simplicity, and lower weight and size, go for the HX100. Because the lens is fixed, once you buy it, you are done. If you want a camera with the potential to deliver pro image quality, and the ability to change lenses, add a flash or other accessories, go for the A33. One note, the Sony A37 is coming soon and replaces the A35 which replaced the A33 which is a first generation dSLT.

I have several lens' from a SLR and want to know which DSLR will work with them.?

macydoodle

I have a Minolta auto-focus 35-70 zoom w/macro, an Albinar auto-focus 75-200 zoom with macro and a Soligor ultra-wide angle 17mm lens that all have a bayonette lens mounts. I have a good deal of money already invested in these lenses and would llike to keep them if I could either find an adapter to use them on say a Canon or other camera that would accept the mount without an adapter. Can anyone help?

Answer
Forget adapters, they're too clunky.
Not wanting to be rude, those lenses are not top spec. so don't spend a lot on getting them to work. If they're all in Minolta Maxxum AF mount then they will fit on Sony DSLRs. The modern lenses, thanks mainly to coatings and better design, will produce better image quality. However, because the APS-C DSLRs crop the centre of the image the quality from those old lenses won't be too disappointing.

You could pick up either a new Sony A58 or any of the other older cameras back to A35 which fixed translucent mirrors and electronic viewfinders. However the first of the double-digit Sony line with optical findes from A200 to A580 were pretty goodl.

How do you get Shutter Speed to 4000 without the screen getting black?

best canon lens t3i image

Justyn Bel

I have a Canon t3i, and i want to do a slow mo sequence in one of my films, so i was trying to put the shutter speed at 1/4000 with the frame rate at 60, but the screen gets really black even when the iso & f-stop are all the way up. So unless it's like super super bright outside i dont know how to get this to work with a 4000 shutter speed. Is there a trick for this?

Answer
It's not surprising it's black with such a fast shutter speed. Unless you are in stonkingly bright conditions, it's bound to be.

When you say the aperture is all the way up - are you aware that the widest apertures have the lowest f number? You could buy a faster lens (one capapble of a wider aperture, say f1.8). Or you could buy some high intensity lighting to light whatever it is you are shooting.

It's no trick - its about learning to balance the three parameters of the exposure triangle (ISO, aperture & shutter speed) for the lighting conditions to get a decent exposure.

Is there a canon lens that will autofocus without the lens moving and without having to press shutter?

gabby

I have a t3i. I want a lens that will autofocus, however, I don't want to press the shutter, and I want it to focus like your standard video camera. Yknow, the cameras with the built in lens that autofocus on the inside all by itself, completely silent. Is there a lens for the t3i like that?

Answer
Part of the issue is the lens. Part of the issue is the location of the mic in the camera. Because low-end dSLRs are designed to capture still images and video (and audio) is a secondary "convenience feature", the location of the built-in mic and lack of internal audio dampening causes the built-in mic to record the motors moving the lens when auto-focus is used. The manual

http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/0/0300004720/02/eosrt3i-eos600d-im2-c-en.pdf

even says so. See page 163.

You have a couple of options for resolution:
1) Use an external mic.
2) Use an external recorder and synch the audio when editing.

"Your standard video camera" is designed to capture video - and audio. The mics are better isolated form the camcorder body. It isn't that the lens focus mechanism is "completely silent"... the lens moves and makes noise, but because the camcorder is designed to capture video and audio, the design of the mic installation is very different.

Since we're here, you probably should read up on the overheating and file length limitation of your camera. You will find the same information in the manual for the T4i - and pretty much any dSLR designed to capture stills.

If the large sensor or other specific dSLR feature is required, then use of a device designed to capture video is much more appropriate. The Blackmagic Design Cinema Cam, Canon EOS (C100/C300/C500) Cinema Cam series, Sony NEX-VG series and NEX-EA series or the Panasonic AG-AF series are essentially dSLRs designed to capture video.

best camera lens app for iphone image

Noah

I want it right above my lens. I'm using a telepropmter app on my phone. I have a DSLR Canon Eos Rebel T3i

Answer
Tape it up your lens... or mount the iPhone on another tripod (there are tripod holders for iPhone or other smartphones) and have it right above your lens...
It's more like a cue card if you put it right above your lens. A teleprompter works by having a clear glass in front of your lens at an angle or a beam splitter reflecting words off a screen which is laying flat.

You could try buying a cheap picture frame with a glass and make your own DIY teleprompter, or check this video out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5_B8yksQmo

How to take wide angle picture without a proper lens?

Love2know

I need to take picture of a beach in a landscape mode. It has to look like I took it with wide angle lens. The problem is that I don't have that lens. Is there any apps that can help me to " stretch" the picture if I take it with a regular lens?
I use Nikon D40 but I edit it on IMac

Answer
"App"? So you're using your iPhone....well...I can only think of 2 options.

Panoramic:
I dont know if there's currently a camera app that has this function, but you would just slowly move the camera to the right and the iPhone takes a bunch of pictures and stitches them together.

Cropping:
Take a picture and crop the top and bottom to make it look like it's stretched.

In my opinion, DSLR cameras have different lenses to be used so can those lenses be used on both entry level and high end DSLR cameras?

What is the difference between those types of DSLR cameras?
I am planning to buy an entry level camera. Which one is better, NIKON or CANON?

Answer
High end cameras have better build quality, better functionality, better built in software for noise etc. blah blah blah.

Yes, the lenses can be used on both. i.e. Nikon lenses on Nikon dslrs.
There is not a "better" camera between Nikon and Canon. They are both as good as each other and it is more personal choice which people use.

What is a good backpack to get for a DSLR camera and lenses?

Anthony

Which is better: Tamrac, Lowepro, some other brand? And is it better to get one pack for your camera and another for your laptop, or is it better to get a combo laptop/camera pack? Which you do you prefer? I'm looking for a medium to large pack that can hold a DSLR camera with one lens attached and an additional 3-4 lenses and accessories and wanted some ideas and recommendations. Something versatile, reliable and comfortable would be best. Thanks in advance.

Answer
I would go to a camera store with your laptop and camera and try some out. Brand doesn't matter it is a bag. Find one that is comfortable for you to carry, is well padded and holds what you need it to.

What digital camera is good for taking night time pictures and fireworks?

TWil

I have 2 cameras and neither takes very good night time pics or pics of fireworks. I will be going to Disney World soon and I want to get some nice night time pics. Any help would be great. What camer do you use when you go to Disney World?

Answer
I think your ideal camera setup would be a digital SLR with high ISO capabilities (and low noise at those high ISO settings) and a lens with image stabilization OR a tripod-mounted setup.

Reasons:
- Digital: because you will be able to review your work and reshoot as necessary. As per the other commentor's recommendation, a digital Canon Rebel should be fine.
- High ISO (~800) will allow you to use faster shutter speeds which will steady your show; however, if you are going for longer shutter speeds for that 'movement' effect, higher ISO and short shutter speeds are not so much a factor.
- Low noise is important (the digital equivalent of 'grain')...and you will see more noise as you use a higher ISO with a darker subject. The nice thing is that Photoshop has a noise remover, so even if you shoot at 1600 with a lot of noise, it can be taken out later.
- Image stabilization on the lens (or on the body if you have a point-and-shoot) is helpful, esp if you are using a telephoto range; otherwise, your firework streams will streak left and right, or up and down.
- A less expensive alternative to the image stabilizer is the tripod...takes more time to setup however. ALSO, you should not use a tripod AND an image stabilized lens at the same time (if mounting an image stabilized lens on a tripod, turn off the image stabilization.)

Other tips, your autofocus may not know what it is focusing on when dealing with fireworks...if this is the case, set your camera to manual focusing and focus at just under or at infinity.

I am thinking about getting a canon DSLR camera any suggestions?

dslr camera lens reviews on ... lens on Canon EOS 50D DSLR test / review by Photozone | Digital Camera
dslr camera lens reviews image

missyyymel

So I am into photography and in a couple classes and I finally feel ready to get a DSLR camera. I was thinking of getting a canon but I am open to nikon too, I also would like video with it which would make my price range pretty expensive. The highest I would spend would be 1300, I am not looking for the "best" and most "professional" camera just one that is good quality and an overall good camera. So any suggestions?

Answer
There are a number of good brands so don't be sold on the idea one brand is better than another. I would keep your costs down. I would get a DSLR with a short zoom (like a 18-55mm) to start for around $550 to $1100. Either a 12MP or 15MP will do just fine.

Below, I listed some links where you can look up reviews and see what camera works best for you.

The first link listed below is to a web page that lists the 4 DSLR cameras that can also do HD video that I am recommending you compare. This list will let you compare features and specs, also it has links to reviews of the cameras, the reviews include sample images from the cameras.

Also I included some links to some dealers so that you can try and get the best price. Some of these dealers are including some nice extras, free shipping is very common, and sometimes they are offering a free memory card and/or camera bag. Sometimes you have to click in the âadd to cartâ button to see the actual price.

Here are some models that I think are well worth researching with estimated prices:

Nikon D5000 12MP DSLR Digital Camera w/18-55mm VR Lens - $659
Nikon D90 12MP DSLR Digital Camera w/18-105mm VR Lens - $1065
Canon EOS Rebel T1i (500D) 15MP DSLR w/EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens - $769
Pentax K-x 12MP DSLR with 18-55mm Zoom lens - $550

Of a quick side note: I am a Nikon user, but think all three cameras are excellent. I like that the Nikon D5000 has the movable LCD screen, that would seem to be valuable in doing video. I am very intrigued by the Pentax K-x partly because it does HD video but also because of how impressive it seems to work at high ISO settings which can be great help in low light situations (see the photo.net link below). Do some research, I would ask some questions in the discussion forums at photo.net where photographers can share their experiences and samples of their work.

Hope this helps. Pick a price range, some features you know you want, and even consider which camera feels good in your hand a factor. Plenty of great cameras, get one you like and start learning the principles of photography and you will be on your way to making some great images. If you think I can be of any help, please to do contact me.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Can someone name the differences between a digital camera and a DSLR for me?

nessalynne

I wanna get a Fujifilm Finepix 2800HD camera. In a review it said that it had the model of a DSLR camera but it wasn't ACTUALLY a DSLR camera.

Answer
The term DSLR generally refers to cameras that resemble 35 mm format cameras, although some medium format cameras are technically DSLRs.
Most digital single-lens reflex cameras (digital SLR or DSLR) are
digital cameras that use a mechanical mirror system and
pentaprism to direct light from the lens to an optical viewfinder on the back of the camera.
The reflex design scheme is a major difference between a DSLR
and an ordinary digital point-and-shoot camera, which typically
exposes the sensor constantly to the light projected by the lens, allowing the camera's screen to be used as an electronic
viewfinder.

thankyou
i dont have time to go to the store i just wont to clean it tonite.

Answer
Its really easy i recently cleaned mine with my eye glasses cloth, or you can use any other cloth like that.

Dont use a tissue or a towel even if it seems soft, that will scratch it. Use those soft clothes that you get when you buy, glasses, or an Iphone.

Anyone know of a good thing to clean my camera lens with?

:) Happy <

I just got a new SLR camera for my birthday and i can't seem to keep the lens clean but everything i have tired to clean with doesn't really seem to work... Any suggestions??

Thank you!

Answer
You can get a lens cleaner at a camera store. Or you can go to a local optomitrist for a lens cleaner cloth. Usually will give you microfiber that won't scratch the glass. Then you get a filter to fit your over lens. Skyfilter is a good inexpensive one. It will protect your lens from dust, scratches and being cracked if you run into something.
Never ever use a t-shirt, towel or some other kind of rough material. It can scratch your lens. Only use a camera lens cleaner luquid if it's dirty and cloth wiping doesn't clean it. Liquid can slip inside and then mold will grow inside your lens killing it.

Which lens should I buy for my first DSLR camera?

dslr lens stuck on camera image
Q. I am going to buy my very first DSLR camera in a few months. It's probably going to be a Nikon D90 or D7000. Problem is, I absolutely have no idea about lenses! I would really appreciate it if you can help me out a bit.

Answer
Normally the standard lenses that come with the cameras are good for beginners.
My Dad brought his first DSLR a few years back and the standard lens has seen more use than both the wide-angle and telephoto lens he purchased too.
My ex also brought a D90 last year and has only ever used the standard lens, which is quite decent.

A 'Nifty-fifty' (a 50mm fixed focal lens) is often brought by beginners, you can get use to taking photographs without relying on the zoom on the lens. These can start reasonably cheaply, and go way into the hundreds for a good one with a low f. stop.

Depending on what you want to do with your camera a wide-angle lens can be useful, there are several companies that make lenses designed to fit to Nikons and Canons, and are often much cheaper than the manufacturers own lenses (though, they may not be as to such a high quality)

Telephoto zoom lenses are good if you are interested in wildlife photography, or photography in which you are going to be a long distance from the subject. However, for a decent one of these you are looking at several hundred pounds, going into the thousands if you require a top - end one.

I would suggest sticking to the basic camera lens at the beginning and see how your photographs turn out. If you realise you like taking more wide-angle shots, then perhaps try a wide-angle lens, and vice-versa for the telephoto.

There are lots of different lenses out there, so I'm sure you'll have lots of fun!!

There are also places where you can hire camera equipment, so it can sometimes to 'try before you buy'. If you borrow a lens for a weekend, and decide you don't like it, it is much cheaper than buying a new lens and then realising.

what is the cheapest dslr on the market?

Kirsty Str

i want to buy a dslr camera and want to know what the cheapest one i could get is and where to get it from?

Answer
maybe you shouldn't buy a DSLR - though the cheapest will be whatever you can find on the internet...

the lens is more important than the body...

but if you want cheap, stick with a point and shoot or bridge...

Alex S

I am getting this as a gift but I'm not sure which one.
Price doesn't worry me because both are on sale at the same price (because it's a boxing day sale)

If I buy the xs it will come with a 18-55mm and a 75-300mm DC Lens.
But if I buy the t1i it comes with a regular 18-55mm but it also shoots video.

And I am stuck on which to buy :/

Thoughts? Opinions? Reviews on the cameras(if you owned one of them)?

Also, this would be my first DSLR camera.

Answer
Get the T1i. The 75-300 that comes with the XS is not a very good lens and is certainly not a reason to get an inferior camera for the same price.

Which camera is better, the Nikon D3100 or the Canon EOS Rebel T3?

I'm trying to decide between these two cameras with links below. I take a lot of photos at children's parties, both outdoor and indoor where there is a lot of action. Can you tell me which you think would be better for that kind of activity while producing clear and sharp images? (Also, is there one that you can make the background more blurry than the other?) I would particularly love to hear from people who have actually used these cameras. Though if you have insight based solely on the specifications listed for the cameras that would help too since I am not all that experienced with dslr cameras. Thank you :)

I own a Fujifilm Finepix S3280 24x zoom camera and just got a Canon Rebel t3i DSLR camera. What are equivalent DSLR lens settings for the zoom factor on the Fujifilm camera? I have a couple of additional lenses for the DSLR, but want to compare "apples to apples". Thanks.

Answer
Once you left the P&S arena, you have got to buy different lenses to cover similar focal lengths to your S3280

The zoom lens with the most range would be the 18-200 mm lens (11x) in P&S terms.

I can use four lenses on my dSLR to produce the most focal lengths usually needed when shooting assignments

* 14-24 mm
* 24-70 mm
* 70-200 mm
* 200-400 mm

In P&S terms, those lenses equal about 28x

If you visit this site, you will see what it costs to purchase those four lenses.

http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Nikon-Products/Camera-Lenses/All-Lenses/index.page

When you went from owning a P&S to a dSLR system, you certainly jumped into the deep end of the photographic pool

What lens should I purchase for my new Canon Xsi SLR camera?

I recently purchased a Canon Xsi DSLR camera. However, I only want to purchase one lens for this camera but I am confused on what to purchase. I was looking at a 18-200 or 18-135 lens but want to get feedback on what to get. I only want one lens! I heard Tamron, Canon and Sigma make good lenses but I am torn. THanks!

Answer
If you are set on only one lens, you could do lots worse than the Tamron 18-270. It has a huge range and also image stabilization, which helps a bunch at the longer focal lengths. It is designed for the cropped sensor cameras such as you XSi. I have the earlier 18-250 lens on my older Canon D60 and am reasonably satisfied with it.

I'm thinking about getting a UV filter for it, but I'm not sure about the size. I keep reading 52mm is that correct?

Also, are there any other accessories you recommend I get?
I don't see anything about a USB for transferring photos/videos from the camera to computer, do I need to purchase one separately?

Thanks in advance!

The UV filter for the 18-55 mm lens is 52 mm.

I would further suggest you buy some 4 gb memory cards. can carry formatted spares in your pocket so you don't get tempted to delete images to make room on a filled card (the most common reason cards become corrupted)

What is the best DSLR Camera for a just starting out photographer?

So I'm looking into getting a DSLR camera, I have done quite a bit of photography but just with the normal digital cameras. I'm supposed to be taking some SR pictures and some sports type pictures. The Nikon D3100 and the Rebel T3 are two good choices. For now, just get an 18-55 kit lens. But before buying a 600-whatver dollar camera, go to your local library and read some of the basic photography books they have.

I am looking for one with a lot of features, and good ones too, I want it to also have a nice exterior look to it. It has to have video capabilities, with a microphone, cause I want to hear it right on the camera. I saw this nice feature called smile mode, where it automatically takes a picture when the camera detects the peron smiling.if there is one with that feature also, please tell me.

Answer
By a camera with removeable lens I assume you are referring to an SLR.

There are currently 4 DSLR's that have a video mode none of which have a speaker built in. They are

Canon 5D MKII $2,700 body only.

Nikon D90 $1,000 body only.

Canon Rebel T1i $800 with 18-55mm lens.

Nikon D5000 $800 with 18-55mm lens.

The 5D MKII has face detection but smile mode is a feature for point and shoot cameras. Why buy a DSLR and use it as an expensive point and shoot camera. You need to learn how to use it manually if you want to get the most out of it.

Are Sony dSLRS good? The only reason I'm considering a Sony is because I can get it at 50% off.

Answer
Sony A300. 10.2 megapixel. Image Stabilization (IS) in the camera body so every lens used will have that benefit. Live View that works with the auto focus. If you need to hold the camera over your head to get the picture (think parades, fences, etc.) flip the screen down, compose and shoot. Shooting at ground level> Flip the screen up, compose and shoot.

Every legacy Minolta Maxxum AF lens made since 1985 can be used with your Sony DSLR. They are plentiful on eBay and can also be found at:
http://www.adorama.com
http://www.keh.com
http://www.bhphotovideo.com
http://www.beachcamera.com
http://www.ritzcamera.com

If you bought the 50mm f1.4 and the 35-70mm and 70-210mm zooms you'd have an excellent kit.

If you'd like to see the value of in-camera IS, go to http://www.shutterbug.com and type 'maxxum 5d' in the Search box. Find the Feb. 2006 test report by Peter K. Burian. His test shots of the yacht at anchor, taken with a 36mm equivalent lens hand-held will show you why having any and every lens stabilized is worthwhile.

Benefits of a camera that can change lenses?

I saw a Sony camera that i might want. It says it can change lenses, what is so good about that? What can different lenses do besides zoom
Thank you!

Answer
Jim A. you need to stop dude you come off so snooty and stuck up. there are some great point and shoots out there not everyone has the budget and or time and dedication to learn a dslr for some as you say toy cameras are perfect for some. he's forgets all technology is evolving not just dslr's as well as your pocket toys as you say .

according to jim its the almighty dslr or no camera at all. dslr are way better but you can still get great pictures with p&s cams

now to answer your question lens are good for their own purpose. Telephoto lens, are for providing zoom. prime lens are for providing clarity and low light capabilities, they let more light into the camera sensor. and some lens just make beautiful boken http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokeh aka how smooth the blur of the background is when you go for that effect. these lens can cost thousands and most lens cost more then the entry level dslr. buy you'll upgrade your camera body every couple of years and you can use all the lenses you acquired on the new 1 so not really a con

Tips for bringing DSLR camera on a flight?

lens in dslr camera on What is a macro lens - Is your DSLR camera lens a macro lens if it has ...
lens in dslr camera image
Q. I'm planning on bringing my DSLR camera with only one lens on a domestic flight. I'm leaving the memory card and battery inside of the camera and I'm also bringing the charger.

Three questions:
1. Would I have to take my camera out of the camera bag, or would it depend on various things?
2. Would I have to turn my camera on, or would this also depend on something?
3. Do you have any essential tips to avoid unnecessary hassle/problems?

If you can answer any one of these questions, it would be appreciated. Stories of your experience with bringing a DSLR as carry-on would be great.

Answer
There are no hassles. Many people bring cameras. I have never seen any check point sign or read any regulations that say you need to take that kind of item out of you bag.

Laptops, CPAP machines, large gaming consoles or other large electronics do need to be removed, but not cameras.

There is no reason why they would ask you to turn it on. They can see from the x-ray image that there are only cameras parts inside.

The x-rays will not do anything to the camera or the card.

What features does the lens in a dSLR camera effect?

St Lo

I'm Looking to buy a dSLR camera and i was wondering what aspects does the lens affect and what aspects does the body effect. for example ISO, aperture and shutter speed.

Answer
The lens focuses the image. A better lens will produce a sharper, less-distorted images. A fast lens will allow you to shoot more easily in dim light. 1.4 or 2.8 are fast lenses. 4.5 or 5.6 are slow lenses.

The body contains the sensor. A good sensor records highlights and shadows well, and doesn't have a lot of noise or color problems.

The body contains the hardware and software for processing the information from the sensor and turning into an electronic image. Better software produces sharper, cleaner images with better color.

I have the Canon Rebel XS with the kit lens and I want to buy a telephoto lens.

I need help sorting out all the lingo. For example, what is DG, and whats the difference between f/4.0-5.6 IS and f/4.0-5.6 III? Canon vs Sigma?

I will mostly be shooting people, sports and occasionally landscapes.

Answer
Personally I would stick with a Canon lens over Sigma. Third party lenses are rarely as good as the Canon lenses. Also camera companies design their lenses with future technology in mind. They do not release this information to third party makers . There is a good chance that sometime in the future the third party lenses will no longer work correctly with new cameras.

The lingo means the following.

DG: Is Sigma's designation for digital only lenses. These lenses are designed to be used exclusively on digital cameras with APS-C sized sensors like your Rebel. They will not work on full frame digitals or film cameras.

F4.0-5.6 IS means the lens is a variable aperture lens with image stabilization. The max aperture changes from F4 at the wide end of the zoom to F5.6 when zoom all the way out. On a 70-300mm lens the max aperture will be F4.0 at 70mm and F5.6 at 300mm.

F4.0-5.6 III means that it is a variable aperture zoom and that is the 3rd addition of the lens.

For Canon telephoto zooms I would look at either of these two.

Canon EF 70-300mm F4.0-5.6 IS about $600

Canon EFs 55-250 F4.0-5.6 IS about $250

The 70-300mm III is not really a very good lens. You would be better off spending a few dollars more and getting the 55-250 over this lens.

Which Canon t2i value pack would be more worth my money?

hellomichi

I am planning on buying the new Canon t2i and Best Buy has two separate packages available.
One includes an extra 75-300mm Zoom Lens and the other includes an extra 55-250mm f/4-5.6 Telephoto Zoom Lens. The telephoto lense is a little more money but only by like $100
I was wondering if anyone could tell me the differences between the lenses and which one would be more worth my time, if either.

Thanks!

Answer
I would go w the 75-300mm zoom. I have a Canon Rebel and the 75-300mm Zoom

Factor on the camera is 1.6, so 1.6 times length of your lens gives you the effective length.

18-55 becomes 28 to 88

75-300 becomes 120 to 480

Unless you need a wide angle lens, or a macro lens, you pretty much have it covered.

18-55 general photography and landscapes
75-300 sports, and things you can't (don't want) to get close too.
wide angle - journalism. get the big picture
macro - real closeup work
80- to 105 portraits (use high end of 18-55 (28-88), or low end of 75-300(120-480)

I go to Blackhawks games a lot (I'm obsessed with Jonathan Toews :D) and I am currently looking for a high quality DSLR camera and possibly lens. From high up, will a 400 mm zoom take high quality pictures from a very far distance? Also, if you have any camera suggestions, let me know!

Answer
No. Even if you were willing to drop $10,000 on a 400mm f/2.8 prime, your pictures from the balcony wouldn't be as good as the ones you'll see the next day in the paper. They might not even let you in carrying a setup like that. Just enjoy being there!

If you must do this, my advice is rent a DSLR and lens rather than buying. In Chicago, your best bet is Progear. Just call them up and talk to a tech, and they'll point you in the right direction in terms of what gear you need. I'll warn you, though, that they might (like me) just tell you to enjoy the game.

Best DSLR camera for film making and photography?

Q. I've decided to purchase my first dslr camera. I'm a amateur film maker so I need a camera that can handle that, with excellent video. But I also do a lot of photography, especially sports.
I'm not too concerned with costs. Basically, I want the best possible video and picture quality possible. With quality, I'm not really willing to sacrifice.
On a less important note, I have pretty small hands, so an especially large body might be a problem.

Answer
Film makers use 16 mm and 35 mm motion picture cameras and most of them rent them from a place like here

http://www.birnsandsawyer.com/_camera-rentals/35mm-cameras/

Some dSLR's have a video feature, but are NOT designed to be a primary video camera. For those you can rent them from Birns and Sawyer or buy something like those listed on this link

http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ModelList?storeId=11201&catalogId=13051&catGroupId=34401&surfModel=AG-HPX370

The above cameras are designed to produce video projects and do an excellent job

ALL video, motion picture and digital still cameras have large camera bodies, but since all but a few shots needed to produce a film/video involve the camera being mounted on a tripod, this should NOT be a problem for you.

Here is a link to the type video camera used by one of my sports shooting colleagues.

http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/cat-broadcastcameras/cat-dvcam/product-DSR400PL/

The lens he has attached to is is a Fujinon ENG Style zoom designed for 1080p

http://www.fujifilmusa.com/products/optical_devices/broadcast-hd-sd/hdtv-lenses/2-3-eng/za-select/za22x76-berd/

While simple $300 P&S cameras shoot both stills and video, neither are what you would want to use if your goal is excellent stills or excellent video.

best canon kit lens upgrade image

George Was

I have a Canon and they are so confusing because I want to upgrade my kit lens. Even the expensive L lenses have worse range than the non L lens ones. So what does the L do as far as better picture quality. I understand it looks nice but what else, it seems like I could get a lens with better specs for much less. I basically now just judge by range and price and looks. I dont get it

Answer
If you are getting a l lens, youknow you are getting the best canon has to offer. People rarely speak poorly of canon l lenses. No examples may come to mind eventually, but they are reallt isolated instances.

factors that effect price
- l badge. You pay a small premium for it. No different from a nike branded shoe
- aperture. Photographers are obessessed with fast speed. Consider the 50mm. F/1.8, f/1.4 and f1.2. The price difference gets more and more rediculous. You are also paying a premium for the added speed of low light lenses.
- optics. These refer to contrast and sharpness
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?FLI=0&API=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=0&LensComp=0&CameraComp=0&Lens=404
this site is a good tool to see the contrast differences between lenses. Play around with it, it wont take long to see what i mean
- l lenses are typically weather sealed against harsh environments. It gives more assurance when the weather isnt perfect. It makes the lens more durable.

- factors that dont matter. The biggest one is zoomrange. The reason being is that the more optics and zoom your lens has, the slower f stop it becomes. The less contrast and sharpness it has.

What's the best all-in-one lens for a Canon digital rebel?

Emily

I am looking to upgrade from my kit lens on my Canon Digital Rebel XT. I can spend around $500. I want something like the sigma 18-125 in terms of range, but I've heard mixed reviews on that one. I've done so much research now that I've confused myself. Any suggestions would be great!

If youre confused now do you think many different opinions are going to make you less confused? Thats why I never ask opinions when Im making a purchase. I do my own research and make my own choice. Youll hear mixed reviews on just about everything.

How would you rate the Sony Alpha A200 vs the Nikon D40x or D60?

sony dslr camera lens review image

Justin H

I've been saving for a DSLR camera for a while now. I have been looking at the Nikon cameras, but I came across the Sony A200 in the same price category. The one review I read seemed to be very complementary, but it didn't compare it with any other brands.

With the Nikon cameras, is there any significant difference between the D40x and D60?

Answer
The D60 is the updated version of the D40X. It has one or two minor extras - scroll about 2/3rds down this page for a list: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond60/
And here's the final verdict: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond60/page30.asp

I'd prefer either one to the Sony A200.

In this review for the A200 they practically warn against using higher ISO settings and they suggest that you shoot in RAW (instead of jpg) even at ISO 100 for decent image quality... this is simply retarded: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonydslra200/page31.asp
My other go-to review site is kinder towards the A200: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2008_reviews/sony_alpha200_pg6.html

Also, Nikon's selection of lenses and their upgrade path would steer me towards the D60. Then again, I personally use a Nikon D200 so you know, I could be biased ;-)

I'd consider the Nikon D60 vs. the Canon XSi, rather than the Sony A200. And between the D60 and the XSi, I'd simply get whichever one felt better in my hands - the specs and image quality are virtually identical.
---
added:
Thomas, wtf?
At stores the D40X is roughly $150 cheaper (both come with an 18-55mm kit lens... factor into that, that the D60 comes with a newer & better version of the 18-55mm zoom)
Also, I'm a great fan of Fhotoace myself but here his arguments don't make much sense:
if you're a pro, you wouldn't be looking at EITHER of these cameras.
And if you're an amateur, you wouldn't want to use about 95% of Nikon's lenses made since 1959 - most of them don't work properly on the entry level D60. For that (get a D80 or up to use the full range of AF lenses, or a D300 or up to meter with any of the older manual focus AI lenses.) With the D60 you do have a great selection of roughly 30 different AF-S and AF-I lenses. That should still be plenty for most amateurs.

What DSLR camera would you recommend me to buy?

I need a new camera but am lost on which one to get!
I have my eye on Nikon D3100 or Canon 550D- any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

Answer
My other suggestion would be to look at the Sony SLT A55. This DSLR has Sony's Translucent Mirror Technology which allows for full-time continuous auto focus whether you're shooting still pictures or 1080/60i HD video. No other DSLR allows this. The technology also allows shooting at 10fps (frames per second) which is the fastest in its price range. The Sony SLT A55 also gives you 2D or 3D Sweep Panorama in the camera as well as HDR in the camera. It also has built-in GPS.

Here are some reviews:

Current prices at B&H - http://www.bhphotovideo.com

Nikon D3100 w/18-55mm zoom, $649.95 after a $50.00 Instant Savings from B&H. Ends 7-30-2011.

Canon 550D/T2i w/18-55mm zoom, $749.95 after a $50.00 Instant Savings from B&H. Ends 7-9-2011.

Sony SLT A55 w/18-55mm zoom, $799.99 after a $50.00 Instant Savings from B&H. Ends 7-9-2011.

All 3 cameras have free USA shipping.

With its built-in focusing motor and Sony's version of Image Stabilization in the camera body and use of the legacy Minolta Maxxum "A" lens mount the SLT A55 can use the Legacy Minolta Maxxum AF lenses dating back to 1985 and they will auto focus and become, in effect, IS lenses.

The Nikon D3100 requires the more expensive Nikon AF-S lenses if you want them to auto focus.

Canon and Nikon have their respective versions of IS in some but not all of their lenses plus you pay for it over and over. A Minolta Maxxum AF 50mm f1.4 prime lens on the A55 will be an IS lens. Neither Nikon nor Canon offers an IS 50mm prime lens.

In my opinion the Sony SLT A55 offers technology and features that Nikon and Canon lack. Its only a matter of time before Canon and Nikon will have to respond by upgrading their technology to match that of the Sony A55.
