Are Sony dSLRS good? The only reason I'm considering a Sony is because I can get it at 50% off.

Answer
Sony A300. 10.2 megapixel. Image Stabilization (IS) in the camera body so every lens used will have that benefit. Live View that works with the auto focus. If you need to hold the camera over your head to get the picture (think parades, fences, etc.) flip the screen down, compose and shoot. Shooting at ground level> Flip the screen up, compose and shoot.

Every legacy Minolta Maxxum AF lens made since 1985 can be used with your Sony DSLR. They are plentiful on eBay and can also be found at:

If you bought the 50mm f1.4 and the 35-70mm and 70-210mm zooms you'd have an excellent kit.

If you'd like to see the value of in-camera IS, go to http://www.shutterbug.com and type 'maxxum 5d' in the Search box. Find the Feb. 2006 test report by Peter K. Burian. His test shots of the yacht at anchor, taken with a 36mm equivalent lens hand-held will show you why having any and every lens stabilized is worthwhile.

Benefits of a camera that can change lenses?

Answer
Jim A. you need to stop dude you come off so snooty and stuck up. there are some great point and shoots out there not everyone has the budget and or time and dedication to learn a dslr for some as you say toy cameras are perfect for some. he's forgets all technology is evolving not just dslr's as well as your pocket toys as you say .

according to jim its the almighty dslr or no camera at all. dslr are way better but you can still get great pictures with p&s cams

now to answer your question lens are good for their own purpose. Telephoto lens, are for providing zoom. prime lens are for providing clarity and low light capabilities, they let more light into the camera sensor. and some lens just make beautiful boken http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokeh aka how smooth the blur of the background is when you go for that effect. these lens can cost thousands and most lens cost more then the entry level dslr. buy you'll upgrade your camera body every couple of years and you can use all the lenses you acquired on the new 1 so not really a con
