What lens do I need for Canon xti to take good wedding pics ?

I now have a 18-55mm and 300mm lens. Want one in between. What other acces. do I need ?

Answer
First off, your 300mm is pretty much not needed for weddings except possibly for an occasional unusual perspective. The 18-55 will be useful for candids and group shots, so that's fine.

Lighting in churches can be pretty bad and you may not be able to use flash, depending on the wishes of the couple and officiating clergy, so you should look at a fast standard zoom such as Canon's EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM. It's not cheap, but well worth the money when the light stinks. Your photos MUST be sharp, so consumer-quality zooms with variable aperture are a losing proposition. You will quickly find out that lens speed is worth the money.

Other things you probably need:
-- a top-quality flash such as Canon's 550EX with an external power supply. No one in the wedding party wants to wait while you change AA batteries. Down the line you may want to add a second flash, which is very useful for lighting setup shots and portraits.
-- a flash bracket and remote cord for the flash. Direct flash in the mark of the amateur.
-- a medium-weight tripod.
-- a relationship with a professional printer. The local Walgreen's won't cut it.
-- a second SLR body for the inevitable day your primary body dies during a wedding and to keep mounted with a second lens for quick shooting of candids. Your customers want photos, not excuses. If you can't afford it now, consider renting a second body on wedding days until you can afford another body. A one- or two-day rental is cheap insurance.

Those are the basics and more than you asked about. Good luck!

What lenses should I rent for my first wedding using a canon eos 60D?

Im shooting my first wedding in October! Ill be shooting indoors but I dont plan on bringing a flash seeing as ive always used natural light in my photos. Ive never shot a wedding though as I stated before, and I dont really know what lenses to use with a 60D seeing as its not a full frame camera. The lens I use daily is the 50mm 1.8 and I planned on either taking that or renting the 1.4, So other then that, what other lenses should i look to get?

Answer
Tough to say, as a fast midrange zoom is usually best for weddings but most are only full frame. A 17-55mm f/2.8 IS would probably be the best for the job, and it is an EF-S lens so it won't weigh as much as a boat anchor.

If you can't do that, you will need a normal and perhaps a wide lens... like a 35mm or a 24mm. And if I was going to be carrying around and switching primes, I would rent another body too... most likely a 5D or 6D with a 35mm for group shots and keep the 50 1.8 on the 60D for close ups and portraits..... but a zoom will make it much easier for you and less annoying for your subjects.

Also make sure you have a speedlight with a diffuser. Though natural light is great, it is often too contrasty for good photos. Even a pop up fill flash will fill in shadows wonderfully and actually make it look more natural.

What is the best Camera for independant film makers wanting broadcast quality?

Q. I'm a Film student, in the pre-production phase, of creating a micro budget film. I have a range of cameras in mind, however I want to ask any ones advice. The Camera I require must be able to shoot in low lighting conditions, and preferably on DV. I'm looking for something under 1500<, for example a Sony FX1

Answer
I would say the 7d is the best starter for the independent filmmaker , really good in low light situations , excellent iso and depth of field capabilities , while FX1 and others have fluorite len's they are not overly forgiving if you put other lens on them , the 7d is a cheaper version of the canon 5d mark 2 which is the leader in low light capture devices , 5d is being picked up by many independent filmmakers , and current productions and low budget films , purely for the frame rate full definition and the overall cinematic look (have a look at short film demo's and you will be convinced), additionally the technology in these usually lasts a lot longer than the specific type video camcorders

I am continually amazed at how quickly people on ebay and some of the stores on the web start offering genuine goods much cheaper than shop prices.

I assume that they must buy directly in bulk but I have no idea where to start. I would love to start an online business doing this and could do with some pointers? Any ideas?

For your info, I would be thinking mainly of DSLR cameras and lenses etc etc

What is the best dslr camera for low light?

ssgomezz

I am looking at refurbished, low end price dlsr cameras. I have used a pocket size Sony digital Cybershot for years and find I really need a better camera for low light. I take a lot of pictures indoors of animals (for cat and dog rescues). I have watched refurbished Canon, Nikon and Sony dslr cameras from 200$ to 400$ (their new prices were around 600$). I am stumped as to what is best for me-I don't need portability, and can work with any size hand grip. I just want a good camera for low light and some fast moving objects...and if I can use any of my current Sony cables etc, all the better.

Answer
The biggest part of DSLR cameras that are good for low light is usually the lens you have on it. Have a look at the aperture of the lens(es) you will be or looking at with the camera (usually seen as the f-stop). For low light, look at lenses around the 1.4 - 2.4 range.

The better the f-stop, the faster you will also be able to take the shot.

I was at a political rally the other day and could only get a good result by turning off the flash and not using the telephoto lens on my camera. The camera I was using was a 6.2 mega pixel cool pix L1,5x optical zoom 6.3-3.14mm 1:2.9-5.0. Would a better camera help? What should I buy?

Answer
You need something with fast aperture f/1.8 to f/2.8.

More than 20ft with a point and shoot and the flash is worthless.

You need a camera body with great low light performance, which moves you into the DSLR range of cameras.

Fast glass is not cheap, and can cost yuou as much or more than the camera body.

So, unless you really NEED to be taking pictures with these requirements and can afford to shell out $100 to $1500 for gear and then learn how to use it...I'd say get someone with the knowledge and experience to take images for you.

Get a friend or hire a pro with the right gear.

What good reason can I say that might get me a new camera?

Just Rando

So the camera I have is the Nikon Coolpix S70. Its almost a 4 year old camera. I know its not a good camera to use if I'm a person who has a strong interest in photography and I might want to turn it into a career. Its the only camera my family and I own. Since my dad started using smartphones, he stopped using that camera because he find it easier to use and faster when it comes to sharing photos and also he is not into the different settings a camera has. As long as the photos is taken and it's not blurry than he is happy with the photo.

I don't even think my mom has 20 photos in her smartphone taken by herself. She not into taking photos and when my parents travel, my dad does all the photo taking.

My dad knows some stuff about cameras but just doesn't use it. When I was looking at a camera online, he immediately knew what I was looking at. He can even tell which camera is newer than the other.

I have asked a while back if I could buy a new camera. My dad doesn't think I would need it because he knows I going to ask for the DSLR. I'm also thinking of a changeable lens camera. In his mind he only thinks I want it because I see people using it. Also, he says there are many functions I can use to take photos that won't even use. If I want to be a photographer, I will have to try out the functions in the camera to know which one I prefer with what I'm going to take.

I'm not trying to find ways to persuade my parents into buying it. If they don't after hearing my reasons than i'll just have to live with what I have intil they change their mind or when I have the money to buy one. I want them to know I have a lot of love and passion for photography. If they buy it for me it can really help me out if they let me go to a photography school next year. I'll have some good quality photos to show the teachers at the school. Even if I don't go to a photography school and find a job to do with photography they will easily hire me with the photos I have taken.

Answer
The best one is that you don't have money; but being practical, ask them first if it's a good idea for you to go to a photography school; then you would have an idea about your possibilities

nikon d5100 dslr camera vr lens kit review image

Hello, I'm going to be buying a nikon d5100 within this next week.
There's one I'm looking at that includes the shoulder bag, a 4gb memory card, a 18-55mmVR lens and a 55-300mmVR lens going for 1200 dollars. Is that a deal? What are the essential lenses for this nikon?
There is another one going for 850 dollars including the 18-55 kit lens. With a coupon for 200 dollars of a 70-55 lens and 150 off a 55-300 with purchase of the camera.
I'd probably buy extra warranty on top of both of these cameras, but which works out at the better deal?
Is it worth buying the first one with the bag, dvd, guide and memory card?
Are they all essentials? Would it be cheaper to buy them separately?
Which lenses are the best?
Please help.
Thank you.

Answer
Hi there, afraid this probably isn't exactly going to satisfactorily answer your question but hopefully a few points may be able to help you decide. Firstly, the sort of lens(es) you might need depend on the types of photography you are likely to participate in. You can often get good deals with kit lenses when buying the lens/camera at once. An 18-55mm and 55-300mm will give you an excellent range to cover. Before jumping on it however, I would look at the price of a Nikon 18-200mm VR II lens. There isn't actually a huge zoom difference from missing out between 200mm to 300mm and it means you only have to carry one, not two, lenses. It may be a bit more expensive though. Best to check out reviews of all 3 of these lenses, and their prices, so you can make an informed decision.

Whilst deals often give you a whole package with everything you need (and yes, you will need a camera bag/memory card), they often aren't perfect. I personally choose to buy things separately even though they cost a bit more. If i know exactly what product(s) I want however I often look for reputable sellers on eBay for good deals on non fragile things like memory cards and/or bags. Look for genuine items at lower than store-prices!

One thing with any DSLR to look out for is a good memory card! The D5100 can shoot up to 4 fps and that's a lot of data that has to go on the memory card in a hurry - cheaper cards are almost always slower. I personally will only shoot with Sandisk cards (looking in their Ultra or Extreme range - the higher the range the faster the card) but there is a diverse range of reputable brands out there. Try and find something that can transfer at least 15-20MB per second.

So in a nutshell: Are they all essentials? Well you need a memory card, at least one lens and of course the camera. Would it be cheaper to buy them separately? Worth looking into but probably not. Is it still better to go with a deal: personal opinion in what it is you want and how fussy you are over speed, quality, amount of equipment, weight etc. Which lenses are the best? It's not a question of the best, you need to find a balance between quality, functionality and price. It sounds like you're more interested in the balance between functionality and price at this stage and that you're not quite looking for a $13,000 lens.

Hope this helps; good luck making a decision and enjoy the new camera whatever you choose!

I'm beginning to research on what camera i would like to buy.
I'm sticking out of the high-end level area, it gets too expensive for my uses.

LOOKING TO SPEND AROUND $800-$1400 FOR A GOOD KIT.

I would like it to have great video, and great quality photos if possible. I like things to be strong, and built very well, and I want this camera to be something I can take with me on trips all over for years to come.

I've been considering things such as:
Nikon D3100
Nikon D5100
Nikon D7000
Nikon D90
Canon T3i
Canon 60D
Canon 600D
Sony A55
Sony A77
(future) Sony A57

I'm looking for small or mid sized too

Thanks for the help!!
if it helps any, i am a rock climber, so it would be nice to have something that can shoot well for those scenes

also- i love cars, so i may be doing video at the track

Answer
I am a big fan of all Nikon cameras. I think it is the best brand for cameras ever. Out of all the models you mentioned for me Nikon D5100 16.2MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens is the absolute winner. I can compare the D3100 and the D5100 in detail for your better understanding.

Advantages of the Nikon D5100 over D3100:

1. Significantly better image quality 80.0 vs 67.0
2. Significantly lower noise at high ISO 1 183 ISO vs 919 ISO
3. More dynamic range 13,6 EV vs 11,3 EV
4. Significantly higher resolution screen 920k dots vs 230k dots
5. Has an external mic jack Yes vs No
6. Has in-camera HDR Yes vs No
7. Has a flip-out screen Yes vs No
8. Better color depth 23,5 bits vs 22,5 bits
9. Better maximum light sensitivity 6,400 ISO vs 3,200 ISO
10.Higher true resolution 16.1 MP vs 14.2 MP
11.Shoots faster 4 fps vs 3 fps
12.Better boost ISO 25,600 ISO vs 12,800 ISO
13.Longer battery life 660 shots vs 550 shots
14.Larger sensor APS-C 23.6x15.6mm vs APS-C 23.1x15.4mm

The only plus point of the D3100 is that it has 400 ms startup delay whereas the D5100 has 500 ms. So the D3100 has 20% less delay when turning on otherwise the D5100 is the best choice.

Mary Anton

My sister drop our DSLR (D5100) on the carpet, i'm so uncomfortable so i decided to ask a question here, Please answer my question, what will happen if you drop your dslr on the carpet? ASAP!

Answer
Nothing or maybe a lot

Bad things like misalignment the lens mount (even as little as a .05 mm misalignment can cause problems with focus across the sensor.

The mirror could become misaligned and not move completely out of the way when you are taking a shot. This will show up as a black band across the bottom of your images.

The auto-focus system may become misaligned, so that your photos are just not quite in focus.

If any of your images show any of these signs, you will want to send your camera to Nikon for repair

How can I clean off smudge mark on sensor DSLR sensor?

kuya731

There is this smudge mark on my pictures from my Canon 60D and I have no idea how to get it out. It's not the lens because I tried two different lenses and the mark showed up in the same spot, which leaves me to believe it is the sensor. Whenever I close to a higher F-stop the mark becomes more focused. I've also tried using canned air to blow any dust away but that didn't seem to help.

Answer
Take it to a professional camera repair shop. Tell them what you did and they will quote you a price to replace the sensor.

I recently purchased a Sony SLT-A35 and I've been very pleased with it thus far. I only the supplied kit lens and I'm interested in purchasing a telephoto zoom lens for it. Right now I'm looking at the tamron 75-300 mm lens due to the low price and the good reviews. There's also the Sony version of the tamron which is more expensive. Finally there is also the Minolta "beercan" lens that can be purchased used at a reasonable price although I believe that one is a 70-210 mm lens. Which of those is the best option? Feel free to offer more suggestions but keep in mind that I can't really afford anything more than the Sony which is $250.

Answer
Unless you absolutely positively need the extra "reach" of 300mm (the Tamron 75-300mm) I strongly suggest the Minolta Maxxum AF 70-210mm f4 simply because its a constant aperture zoom. Also, I own and use the older manual focus 70-210mm f4 "Beercan" and the optics of the AF version are identical to mine. Its one sharp lens.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/drifter45h/6217155698/ My camera was mounted on my tripod but this was taken using my 70-210mm zoom.

New Camera Advice Needed?

TheFotogra

I currently have a Sony DSLR A200 and I'm looking to upgrade. I want something with even more clarity, possibly more features, quicker speed, and ability to switch from manual to auto (I know all cameras do this but not all have full capabilities in both modes). Any advice? Ideas? Etc?

Answer
Since you didn't bother to tell us what lens or lenses you have with your A200 I'll just guess that all you have is the 18-70mm zoom that came with the camera. From reviews I've read it isn't the best lens in the Sony lineup - which is probably why it was discontinued. If I'm wrong and you have several lenses then there is no doubt you'd best stay with Sony unless you want to buy all new lenses.

The A200 is a fairly old model (by DSLR standards) so wanting to upgrade is probably a good idea. I suggest looking at the two newest from Sony - the SLT A65 and SLT A77. These are next generation DSLRs using Sony's Translucent Mirror Technology (TMT) first introduced in the SLT A33/A35 and A55.

These Sony SLT cameras are the only cameras currently on the market that allow you to have full-time continuous auto focus whether you're shooting still images or 1080 HD video. Another plus for TMT is that you can actually see the scene even as the exposure is being made. The viewfinder never goes dark. TMT also gives you the fastest shooting rate - 12fps (frames per second) with the SLT A77.

Although some models from Canon and Nikon allow for auto focus when shooting video its the slower, choppy contrast-detect method whereas the Sony cameras use the faster and smoother phase-detect auto focus.

Any lenses you currently have for your A200 are fully compatible with the SLT DSLR cameras.

http://www.imaging-resource.com/NEWS/1314162119.html

http://www.popphoto.com/gear/2011/08/new-gear-sony-alpha-a77-and-a65-translucent-mirror-dslrs

In the future the movable mirror found in today's DSLRs may be an obsolete technology. Look at the success of the mirror-less cameras from Sony (NEX-3, NEX-5) and the models from Olympus and Panasonic. Nikon has announced plans for a mirror-less camera and Canon probably won't be far behind. My knock on the Sony NEX cameras is their new "E" lens mount. Lenses for them are few and pricey.

So read what's being said about the SLT A65 and A77.

Okay so the first link down below is to a photograph I took. I edited this picture using just Lightroom 4, but I do also have Photoshop CS6. The second link is to a photograph by a professional photographer. His images are amazing. They are all so sharp and beautiful! And his models skin tones are PERFECT. Does anyone have any advice for me on how to get my images to look more like his? I mainly want to focus on the sharpness and the bright creamy skin tones. We both are using the same lens; Canon 85mm 1.2. So if anyone has any advice on how to edit in Lightroom or Photoshop and maybe how to use my lens settings that would be great too!! Thanks!

Answer
His skin tones aren't perfect by a long shot. Its sloppy and smudgy.

They are better for one because the photographer uses saturation masks and evens the skin saturation so its not blotchy although he still has saturation banding at the edges.

Intense D&B is probably also used to even out the tones.

That means adding a black and white adjustment layer then adding curves adjustment layer.
Change the blend mode of the curves layer to luminosity and change 128 grey to say 178.
Invert the mask, zoom in to 100 % or MORE
Use a soft brush.
Change the opacity of the brush to around 1-3%
Lighten darker areas slowly and build it up to match in all places on the face. Uncheck the layer to see your results, you will be surprised.

Create another curves layer with the opposite for burning to bring down brighter areas on the face. Match the tones on the face or sculpt it with light D&B.

What should my f/stop be when taking a picture of a couple?

Clarissa

I have a Canon 85mm 1.2. I want my background to be as blurring as possible but I want my subjects to be super sharp and in focus.

Answer
In order to have a persons face in focus, from the tip of their nose to the back of their ears, you will have to stop down to about f/4 or f/5.6.

To keep the background out of focus, have them stand at least four feet in front of it.

Do some tests to make sure that their heads are in focus and that the background is out of focus as much as you desire.

If you are shooting other than head and shoulder shots (with the lens further away from the couple), you can use a larger aperture on the lens, but again, you will have to do some tests to assure that their heads are in focus.

Ok so i have hair product on my camera lens. I have a Nikon Coolpix s60. And when i turn it on the lens has little speckles on it and i dont know how to clean it. I need it for my photo journalism class next trimester, i also heard that rice will absorb any moisture do you think this will help?! Thanks!

Answer
I don't need 10 points so I will suggest just as your first answerer suggested, microfiber cloth. For quick use you might go to local camera shop and buy lens tissue. Never put alcohol on lens. In fact I suggest no liquid.

I have a 18-200mm SLR digital camera Nikon Lens. What teleconverter would work best for this?

Cincy G

I have a 18-200mm SLR digital camera Nikon Lens.
I am looking for something that will let me zoom in a lot closer. Is there some sort of teleconverter I could get to attach to it? Or would I have to save up for a 400mm or 600mm lens?

Answer
You can get a 2X teleconverter which will essentially double your focal length to 400mm. In my opinion the autofocus slows down some but it isn't that bad. At 400mm you should definitely use either a tripod or monopod to steady the camera & lens

I am confused by what all the numbers mean on a 35 mm nikon camera lens .. for example . .Nikon mount 28-75 2.8 tamron lens .. what do all the numbers mean and what is the difference .. this is very confusing .. thank you

Answer
OK I'll break it down for you, and I'll try to explain everything
So lets hold up our imaginary lens, the Nikon Mount 28-75 2.8 made by Tamron:

Nikon Mount: the technical name for this is called the "F-Mount" and has been in use by Nikon for many years, so you can get great deals on used older lenses

28-75: That is the "focal range" of the lens (in terms of millimeters). It is telling you how wide the pictures can be (28 mm in this case) and how zoomed in they can be (75 mm). Of course, that means that, on this particular lens, you can take pictures anywhere between 28 and 75 mm.

2.8: that is called the "Æ-stop". This part is a little counter-intuitive, but the smaller the number, the bigger the aperture hole is. The aperture hole is what controls light amount of light entering the camera. So a little Æ'ing math:
Æ2.8 will let in more light than Æ4, and Æ4 will let in more light than Æ5.6

However, there is a catch: the smaller the Æ-stop is, the amount of the picture that will be in focus drops off quickly. So on a picture shot at Æ2.8, there will be a very Shallow Depth of Field
[example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Shallow_Depth_of_Field_with_Bokeh.jpg ]
On the flipside, a picture shot at Æ32 will have a much bigger Depth of Field [example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Jonquil_flowers_at_f32.jpg ] <-- that is the 28-75 tamron lens, but on a canon instead.

Tamron: the lens maker.

Hope that helps a little bit :)

Why do my glasses look like a fish eye?

Tyler

I barely ever wear my glasses because I can't stand this. I don't know what kind of glasses I have or anything. I usually wear contacts. When I put them on for the first time, I tripped down the stairs (lol). My contacts seem normal, but it looks like I'm looking through a fish eye camera lens with my glasses.

Answer
BK is right. If you wear your glasses often enough your brain will learn how to deal with the strange distortion. Even glasses of moderate strength will initially give a noticeably different perspective until the visual processing centre of the brain becomes accustomed to them. Contacts give less distortion because they sit directly on the eyes.

I have a Canon EOS 40D

Answer
Good points.

Another thing to consider is value. If you must buy your own equipment, remember that the lenses you get will probably be worth keeping for years, and have an opportunity to retain their value. Camera bodies however, get better every day, and your shiny new camera today will be long gone into antiquity tomorrow.

Speding a little more on good lenses is smart because they will serve you for a while, and pay you back some when you eventually sell. Because of this, the Canon lens will probably be cheaper in the long run, and is likely a better lens anyway.

Good luck.

What wide angle lens should I get for Canon Digital Rebel EOS?

SnowAngel

I've got the kit lens (EFS 18-55 mm) and a zoom lens, the Canon EFS 55-250 mm f/4-5.6 IS. I would like to get a wide angle lens that would work well with indoor shooting, group events, and capturing wider scenic shots. What would be a good choice for a small budget?

Answer
Sigma's 10-20

Buying a 550d just for video, can anyone tell me the difference besides the aperture for the

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens
and Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM Standard & Medium Telephoto Lens

i know i will get more light with the 1.4 but is the usm significant for video, is shelling out an extra 200$ necessary?

Answer
plastic vs metal
also, the 1.4 is weather resistant.

It is interesting to me that these DSLRs get 20gigs/hr for a video data rate, much better than HD camcorders at 11 gigs. Seems like they should be on par or better than the 13 gigs/hour from MiniDv.

It just seems the file size limits (4 gigs/15 minutes), poor audio, and minimal battery life as well as the wear and tear from both holding the mirror up and the shutter open would turn people away from their use as a primary video camera.

And have you looked into how their compression works with action? The interpreted frame compression may still cause lags, jumps, and mosquitoes although not nearly as bad as 11 gig HD.

I have gone head to head with expensive HD camcorders with my GL-2 and I can up-convert to 1920 x 1080 with better image clarity, by a very noticeable margin.

I am just guessing here, but I'd bet good money that DSLR video would be hard to distinguish from MiniDv, with perhaps a slight edge going to MiniDv in action, and a slight edge going to DSLR with more of a static shot. Audio would excel with the uncompressed audio in MiniDv and aux mics. The versatility of a 20X optical lens, better image processing (Triple CCD) and the GL can shoot tape after tape without break, and with the bigger battery, can shoot for several hours (I've done all day time lapse work).

Anyway, where $1000 gets you a new DSLR and lens, you have to hunt for a good used GL-2 for that price (I've seen them as low as $600 for the GL-1).

As long as you are aware of the limitations, the 550 is a great camera.

what is the best setting for a photoshoot on a canon rebel xt?

dylan

I have basic camera lens for the canon rebel xt, does anyone know good settings on the camera that would help enhance and make a photoshoot look nicer?

Answer
There is no setting to do that... it is the skill and knowledge of the photographer. There are many settings that can be used, and which works best depends entirely on the situation. The camera is a totally dumb box. It is only an instrument that can only perform as well as the person "playing" it.

(By the way, one answer told you to put it in the green box and that would be full manual. Wrong. That is full automatic and I do NOT recommend that. At least put the camera in P mode to allow you to determine things such as when the flash goes off or not).

Honestly, here is the best thing you can do for yourself at this point if you REALLY want to learn to make good photos and know how to use your equipment the way it was intended:

What is the best Canon lens to use for portraits?

I have heard a 50mm 1.2 lens is the best for engagements, seniors, newborns, and things like that, but i'm really not sure what to buy right now!
Opinions?!

Answer
Unless you have $1600 extra, the f/1.2 is kind of overkill. I prefer the 50mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.8, and the 70-200 f/2.8L for doing portraits.

50mm f/1,8 or f/1,4
85mm f/1,8 or f/1,2L
105mm f/2,8 usm or f/2,8L
135mm f/2L
70-200mm f/4L or f/4L IS or f/2,8L or f/2,8L IS II

Which Tamron lens should I get for my Canon camera?

best canon lens video on Canon Lens Buddy 1.5.2 App for iPad, iPhone - Photography - app by ...
best canon lens video image

Ryan Prive

I am trying to decide between the Tamron AF 17-50mm F/2.8 with the Vibration Compensation, or without. Other than that little feature it seems like the same lens, but the one with VC is about $150 more. I will be using this mostly for video, not pictures. I appreciate any help, but no answers like "get a Canon lens" please. Thanks.

Answer
The VC version can be just as sharp as the non-VC one, but based on my own experience it may have a backfocus at 50mm and wide open. If such issues are not recognized and accounted for, then that may seem like the lens is less good than it actually is.

Here is a comparison between the VC and the non VC version:
http://thrillmere.com/2010/09/tamron-17-50mm-f2-8-vc-v-s-non-vc-comparison/

The second set of shots (with the green bottle) are my own. As you can see, the copy of the VC version that i used there (with the 50mm backfocus corrected) is much better than the one used by the author of the article (who might not have had a misfocus corrected).

Myself, i find the minor misfocus at 50mm wide open to be worth having Tamron's excellent VC on the lens, as i do a lot of low light handheld photography. If you on the other hand are much into shallow depth of field work and therefore need a very accurate AF at 50mm, then the non-VC version would be better for you.

Is the Canon 18-135mm Lens good for general purpose shooting?

Joshua

I would like to use a lens for video and photo on my canon 60d. It's just for general use, I'm not trying to use it as a point and shoot camera, I'm just 16 and can't afford a lens for each purpose. Is a good lens or have you any ideas on a similar lens for my uses.

Answer
Yes - it covers moderate wide angle to moderate telephoto.

You will probably want to manual focus it during video or get an external microphone (as the camera will record the noise from the autofocus motor).

How does the camera/lens work in an iphone?

Smartphone cameras are getting really large sensors (iphone 4s with 8 megapixels!) But how could they keep packing more megapixels when the lens is how small, compared with dslrs which only have around 12 megapixel sensors??

Answer
The sensor on the iPhone is very very small. Megapixels have nothing to do with image quality rather than it has to deal with how big you can scale an image up. More megapixels means you can make an image larger without it getting pixelated but it doesn't make it look any nicer.

To understand megapixel think of it like this. You have a cookie sheet and each cookie is a megapixel. Let's say you make 4 GIANT cookies. That's 4 megapixels. But in order to get more megapixels, the cookies have to get smaller since you can't make the cookie sheet bigger. You can get 8 cookies, but they'll be smaller than the 4 giant cookies.

So apple keeps making iphones with more and more megapixels but they keep the sensor size the same. The sensor DSLRs are MUCH MUCH bigger than the ones on the iPhones. So unless apple makes a DSLR sized sensor to put into an iPhone, they can keep adding as many megapixels as they want but it won't look as nice.

How to get into photography as a hobby?

Dat One Gi

I am a teenager and I love art like drawing and painting. And I am told I am very good. I still do it and most Likley always will. I love doing it alot.
I've always loved photography. Like looking at what people can do and how they can edit them and everything. It amazes me. And makes me pretty intrested.
I want to get into trying photography as a hobby. I know some people that do it. Like when they travel or just even around where they live they do landscape and fun pictures. I kinds want into getting that!
Any tips? Ideas anything?
I plan on getting a DSLR camera. Most Likley a Sony one, cause I do like my dads but it's for work and I am generally just not allowed to be on it and stuff cause it's not fully his, it's his companies and has important stuff on it etc.
Sounds pretty awesome!
I would love to just have a good camera as well even though I am not planning on making a career of it. Like its still nice to have just for everything in life like traveling and actually being able to take fairly decent shots! So I honestly don't believe it would ever be a waste.
And dslr's I've noticed don't improve very fast. Like the one my neighbours have is like 5 years old and they are looking into getting a new one but there is pretty much perfect still! And hasn't even had many changes in newer models. So it's not like iPhones when it's like every year is a new thing!

Answer
Get a camera...one you can use. I'm still using a Nikon D200 that's been discontinued for what, 5 years now. It was discontinued when I bought it, but I saved about a thousand bucks. My 18-200mmG VR lens is even older. But, they work for my needs.

I won't even acknowledge you said iPhone.

Get a camera. Shoot. Shoot some more. Learn to "see". Then shoot some more. Read up on photography. Shoot some more. And don't over-process your stuff...nothng is ore hideous than those god-awful faux-"HDR" images.
