Will my current Canon lens fit new camera?

I have a Canon Rebel XS DSLR camera. I am planning on purchasing a film camera, and I found a Canon Rebel X 35 mm SLR film camera on ebay, but it's just the body. Could I use the lens from my DSLR for the film camera as well? Would it fit? It doesn't say what type of lens the film camera takes so I'm not sure if it is EF or EF-S. Thank you
Also what about a Rebel G?

Answer
If the lens you have for your Canon Xs is an EF-S such as the EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 it can't be used on the Rebel X. Only Canon EF lenses can be used on the Rebel X or a full-frame DSLR such as the 6D, 5D or 1D. An EF-S lens will damage the Rebel X or full-frame DSLR.

Canon auto focus 35mm cameras: EF lenses only

Canon cropped-sensor DSLR cameras: EF and EF-S lenses

Canon full-frame DSLR cameras: EF lenses only

What digital slr camera is best for amateur photographers?

kelly b

I really want a digital slr camera, but I don't want to spend a fortune, I've been looking at used ones, and refurbished but they're all so expensive! I've been manly looking at getting a canon EOS rebel xs. Is that a decent camera? I currently have a canon regular digital camera and I love it.

Answer
With DSLR's your buying into a system and Canon is far and away the most expensive, closely followed by Nikon.

Pentax, Olympus and Sony have many more features. They may be more expensive initially, but a soon as you start adding lenses, flashguns etc. they work out much cheaper for the same or Higher quality. You finish with a much more useful system for less money.

Things to look for are a bright viewfinder, good build quality, adjustments of everyday things such as EV value, focus point, metering mode etc. without having to go into a menu. These are basic to using your camera for anything other than 'point and shoot'.

Pentax and Sony offer image stabilisation in camera, so every lens you fit is image stabilised without a price premium. Pentax in particular have a massive range of older high quality lenses available for very little, all will be image stabilised.

A second hand Pentax DS, which is now 5 years old, would be available at a lower price than a Nikon D40 or Canon Rebel, and is much more of a camera than either of them, it has a genuine pentaprism in the viewfinder which means a brighter image, much better build quality, the same Sony sensor that was used on the Nikon D80. The only downside is the lack of image stabilisation. Like all Pentax DSLR's it can operate as a 'focus trap' which no other make of DSLR can do.

What is the use of camera lens adapters?

best camera lens hood on 52MM Telephoto & Wide Angle Lens + Filter + Hood for Nikon D40 D50 D70 ...
best camera lens hood image

Quizzing

Can anyone please tell me the use of Camera Lens Adapters. What is the importance of having it or not having it?
I am thinking of buying a Canon S3 IS. I am not willing to buy a SLR as I am new to photography. I am thinking of taking photography as a hobby. So, when I went through Canon website I came across this term Camera lens adapter. So, that's the reason why I put up the question in Yahoo Answers.

Answer
I've had the Canon S3is for about 8 months. Love It!

So far, I haven't found a need for the adapters. But, basically, Canon offers a couple of configurations - a barrel type adapter that attaches over the main lens, and onto which you can mount either a wide or tele lens. I THINK there are two different adapters - one for each setup.

If you are going to shoot a lot of wide angle, you might choose the wide angle converter option. This is one area where the S3 is lacking. It's widest normal view is equivalent to about 35mm, which isn't REALLY very wide.

In my experience, the 12x tele in it's original configuation is so good, I doubt that I'd ever want to add a tele converter!

One other possible advantage of using an adapter is that you can add filters or a lens hood.

I strongly recommend that - if you by the S3, and if you want to add adapters, lenses, etc. - buy the Canon brand accessories. Yes, they're more expensive. But, believe me, this in one area where you really do get what you pay for.

And a crappy accessory lens that distorts and has lousy color rendition in NEVER a good buy!

Chck out the Canon website for details ... or DPReview.

Would it be unwise to use a 58mm flower lens hood made for a different lens on my 58mm lens?

Adam

I greatly prefer the styling of the flower lens hoods over the less appealing, generic ones. Seeing that the 58mm lens hoods should fit any 58mm lens, would I be making a mistake picking a lens hood not made for my lens specifically?

Answer
There are two issues with lens hoods.

The first you know about - they must attach to the lens. Any 58mm hood will attach to any lens with a 58mm front diameter.

The second has to do with the focal length that the hood is designed to work with. If your lens has a wider focal length than the hood was designed to work with, you may experience vignetting - darkening of the corners and potentially the edges of the frame.

If your lens has a longer focal length than the hood was designed to work with, the hood will be less effective in controlling stray light entering your lens.

Segmented hoods, sometimes called 'flower' or 'petal' hoods, have four segments rather than one continuous ring. The idea behind them is that if you align the hood with the image frame of the camera, the gaps in the hood will line up with the corners of the frame - the areas where vignetting is most likely to occur. That minimizes the risk of vignetting while allowing the hood to be deeper and therefore more effective in controlling stray light.

The problem with segmented hoods is that to work, the segments must always line up with the edges of the image frame. The design of some lenses results in a rotating front element - that is, as the lens focuses, the front element rotates. If you try to use a segmented hood with a lens that has a rotating front element, you will constantly have to realign the hood because it will rotate as the lens focus changes.

So the bottom line is that if the front element of your lens rotates as the lens focuses, you cannot use a segmented hood.

What's the APS-C crop factor equivalent of a 50mm lens on a 35mm film camera?

film camera lens on dslr image

iCan

I'm not sure if the question makes sense or not; but I have a 35mm SLR camera; with a 50mm f/1.9 lens on it.

I love the view of that 50mm f/1.9 lens on my film camera; what would be the equivalent of that lens on a DSLR (Pentax K-x)?

Answer
The K-x has a 1.5x FOV crop, so you'd require a 50mm/1.5FOV= 33.3mm lens. Or in practical terms, anything between 30mm and 35mm.

If you want to keep the f/1.9(ish) maximum aperture, Pentax has a 31mm f/1.8. Unfortunately, it's +$900 item: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/394223-REG/Pentax_20290_smc_Pentax_FA_31mm.html

And to achieve the same shallow depth of field as your f/1.9 on a cropped body (using a 30-35mm lens instead of 50mm), you'd actually have to use f/1.4. You can run the numbers for yourself to verify this: http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html

So, enter Sigma: they have a 30mm f/1.4 for 'just' $440: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/433041-REG/Sigma_300109_30mm_f_1_4_EX_DC.html The reviews are so-so but there's not much else out there that does the same. For a while I considered getting one for my Nikon D200 (also with a 1.5 crop factor.)

Can a digital camera lens be used on a film camera?

Luiz Pedro

I have a canon 50D and im thinking about purchasing a film camera for school. The lens on my canon is the standard one that came with it. Im thinking about buying a film canon SLR and just wanted to know if the lens from my 50D would work with any. And if it only works with particularly SLR's which ones.
Also if anyone has any recommendations on what film camera to get that would help too.

Answer
The lens that came with your Canon 50D is most likely an EF-S lens which means it cannot be used on a Canon AF 35mm film camera or Canon full-frame DSLR like the 5D or 1D. A Canon EF lens can be used on any Canon AF 35mm film camera or cropped sensor Canon DSLR or Canon full-frame DSLR.

Here is a listing of the Canon EOS Rebel AF 35mm film cameras from March of 1987 through Sept. of 2004: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EOS

How to achieve reflective eyes in photo?

best camera and lens for portraits image

CB

Some of my favorite portraits are those where the eyes are a window into the landscape behind the camera lens. I've noticed these are usually achieved outside under natural and strong light, rather than in a studio, where the flash seems to dominate the reflection. Any suggestions for how to achieve this look both in and out of the studio? Is this a matter of the angle of the light, the concentration of the light source, the intensity of the light, the sensitivity of your camera (how much detail it catches), the type of lens, etc.? To be clear, I don't necessarily mean a close-up of the eye itself, but rather a portrait, say, shoulders up, where the eyes have a glassy quality and a clearly defined, sharp reflection.
Thanks for the tips. I wasn't so much talking about catch light as the sort of mirror-like reflection some portraits achieve. Thanks again!

Answer
To get a catch light whether you're in a studio working with artificial light, outside or in a household using natural light, your model need to look in the direction of the light source.

If you have Photoshop I recommend using this method over an action.

What digital cameras are best using existing light wihout flash after sunset?

T E

I have two digital cameras - panasonic tz3 and canon S2 IS - but I am not happy with the grainy picture quality I took using existing light indoor and outdoor after the sunset.

I see that the camera lens are not fast lens, like 1.8 or 1.4...

Answer
Hi, I'm assuming these are both point & shoot (P&S) cameras. Yes?

While these are both top quality brands of cameras (including P&S's), it is just the nature of P&S cameras that it is tough to get high quality photos in low light. Their electronics just aren't as sophisticated as bigger DSLRs and their processor sizes are smaller - so they can't store the same density of info as the bigger cams. They also have small flashes - so you're not able to cast more light to improve the image capture process.

One thing you can do to give yourself a fighting chance at improving quality in low light is to use a tripod. There's a much greater chance to enhance blur in low light. The tripod (or a monopod) would help take that issue off the table.

If your cameras have a "Night" or "Night Portrait" mode, have you tried them to see if that helps? Since you're playing with digital, and therefore not wasting money on film, also experiment using the "Portrait" mode. In portrait mode cameras typically open up the aperture to achieve a shallow depth of field (e.g, they make the aperture setting bigger to let in more light). Try using that (also with camera on stabilizing device) to see if that helps at all.

At some point, if you're serious about photog vs. just capturing fun memories in snapshots, think about moving up to a DSLR. It will help eliminate the problem you're experiencing with the P&S''s.

Take care...

What is a good camera for professional photography?

nikon dslr camera lens compatibility on Nikon D3200 Recommended Lenses NEW CAMERA
nikon dslr camera lens compatibility image

vicki

I am starting a photography course and need to know what would be the best camera for me?

Answer
For a photography enthusiast looking for a high-quality camera, there is a DSLR camera to meet nearly every personality type. Digital SLR cameras fall into various price ranges and categories based on ease of use, features and quality of images. The top digital SLR cameras for beginners offer user-friendly features and high-quality image production, making them good starter cameras to choose from.

Canon EOS Rebel XS

Canon cameras have cornered the market for beginner-level DSLRs since 2003. The EOS Rebel XS DSLR features 10 megapixels, a 18-55 mm lens and live view mode. This is a base-level model camera, but for a beginner-level DSLR, it holds its own quite well.

Canon EOS Rebel T2i

This camera shoots 1080p HD video in 24 and 30 frames per second and offers full manual controls and full autofocus. Although it offers many beginner-level features and benefits, the quality this camera offers rivals higher-end models.

Canon EOS 50D

This is a rock-solid camera choice with a 15-megapixel sensor, 6.3 frames per second continuous shooting and an expanded sensitivity range as high as 12,800. This is a speedy camera with high photograph quality that is well suited to beginners.

Canon EOS 7D

This camera offers a superior image quality, 8 frames per second continuous shooting and 18-megapixel resolution. It also features a 19-point autofocus, large viewfinder, 1.0x magnification and video recording capabilities with full manual control.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II

The EOS 5D Mark II is a slightly older DSLR camera, but is still a solid camera for beginners. It offers a 21.1-megapixel resolution and solid performance in low light. It shoots 1080p video at 30 frames per second and offers full manual control as well.

Nikon D5000

This camera offers HD video recording at 720p, 2.7 inch LCD with tilt and swivel capabilities and a 4fps shooting speed. The Nikon D5000 also features an 11-point autofocus, CMOS sensor and a 18-55 mm lens. This camera is known for providing a solid feature set coupled with high image quality, especially when it comes to low-light photography.

Nikon D90

This DSLR camera was one of the first to offer capabilities for video recording. It offers 720p recording at 24 frames per second, which should be adequate for most beginners. The Nikon D90 offers both high image quality and solid performance, making it a solid choice for budding photographers.

Olympus E-30

This camera offers a tilt and swivel LCD screen and sensor-shift stabilization, compatibility with creative art filters and a number of other appealing features for a beginning photographer. Creative art filters allow for pinhole photography, grainy film and other customizations while taking photographs.

Pentax K-x

This camera is available in several different body colors, and is known for offering capabilities for HD video recording. It comes with an 18-55 mm lens, 11-point autofocus, 4.7 frames per second continuous shooting speed and live view shooting mode. Another benefit to this camera is that it takes AA batteries rather than a proprietary Lithium Ion battery.

Sony Alpha A230

This camera sells with an 18-55mm lens and is a solid DSLR camera for entry-level photographers. It offers a 2.7-inch LCD screen, an optical viewfinder and is relatively lightweight at only 15.9 ounces. The Sony Alpha A230 DSLR offers a built-in wireless flash, fast autofocus, SteadyShot indicator and image stabilization, which is a nice range of features for a basic beginner DSLR camera.

Can I use old Nikon N2002 Lenses with new digital SLR Body?

QBeing

I have a broken Nikon N2002, with 3 good lenses. Does anyone know if I could use these old lenses on a new Nikon Digital SLR Body? I am really interested i getting back into photography, and if I could save some money by using my old lenses it would help.

Thanks.

Answer
I am still using Nikon lenses from the 70's with my Nikon digitals. So probably yes you can use them with Nikon DSLR. Non-AI, Pre-AI (also called NAI are the original Nikon F bayonet lens mount and lenses introduced in 1959 for the Nikon F camera) will not mount on some DSLR. On others it may mount but not meter. On AI converted lenes it will mount but may not meter on all Nikon DSLR. An AI ( circa 1977) lens will work. You may not be able to use all the functions with the lens depending on what series lens it is, some Nikon DSLR do not have autofocus motors in the body.. . AF, AF-D, AF-S, AF-I, VR and G will work ( AF and AF-D will not auto-focus on D-40s or D-60s)
There is a really good chart on lens compatability here

What is that funny wobbling star beside the moon?

best camera lens to photograph the moon image

timetwitch

Tonight, just beside the moon, there is something really bright. The last time my dad pointed something like that out, it was Jupiter. But tonight my family agrees, so I know its not just my eyes - whatever that bright thing is beside the moon, its wobbling! It isn't staying in one spot, or moving along a path. I thought it might be a satellite but I can't tell... What is it? It sort of look like its wobbling in one spot near the moon, like a skier behind a boat is the best I can describe it. Is it a UFO?

Answer
I was just taking photographs of the moon an hour or so ago and saw what you are talking it is Jupiter... I've seen it quite a few times and it has never looked like it has been moving in any way... Even through the lens of my camera... It might be something going on in the atmosphere where you are... If you want more info about it you can google it as star next to moon and it will come up with a good list about it...

How do you photograph stars and the moon with a digital camera?

flyddw

Using ONLY an automatic digital camera, what's the best way of taking pictures of astrological stuff? No telescopes or zoom lens beyond 135mm. I can place the camera on a tripod and take long exposures (< 10 seconds). Current camera: Sony DSC-F828, but the question is really aimed at ANY digital camera.

Answer
Open it up for the full 10 seconds. For that short a time, you will not need to track the stars with a motor drive.

Note that the full moon is MUCH brighter than even the brightest star, so a 10-sec exposure of the full moon will be overexposed. (You'll have to experiment to determine the exact exposure for the Moon; it depends on the sensitivity of the CCD inside the camera).

For stars, you will probably not get much at 10 seconds, unless you are at a very dark-sky site (rural area). But it's worth a shot.

I have two good SLR 35mm cameras that appear to have been made obsolete by the newer digital cameras. Along with my cameras, I have two long lens. Is there a reasonably priced digital camera that will accept the fittings on my long lens so I can take long shots without having to get an expensive digital camera that does have that capability?

Answer
If your 35mm cameras are Nikon - the lenses will fiot Nokon digital.
If your lenses are Canon EOS (EF) then they will fit Canon digital.
If your lenses are Canon FD or FL they will not fit any digital
If they are 42mm screw fit they won't fit any digital.

If they are Pentax K - I think (not sure!) they will fit Pentax digital.

Canon Rebel t2i or is it really worth spending extra on the t3i?

Courtney

I was looking in to getting a Canon Rebel, Canon Rebel t2i or is it really worth spending the extra money on the t3i? Pros and Cons?

Answer
This should help explain the differences... http://www.dpreview.com/products/compare/side-by-side?products=canon_eos550d&products=canon_eos600d

IMO, the biggest differences is the T3i has a flip out LCD (meh....I don't need it), and the Wireless+ Sync connector (could be handy).

So, I would rather get the T2i and use the extra $100 towards a better lens.

Any compact digital cameras that can be used with filters?

slr digital camera lens filters image

Zag

I'm looking for a compact digital camera that filters can be fitted to so that I can use filters in my photography.
Are there any on the market?
I'm looking at high spec cameras, not budget ones.
Any info would be appreciated.

Answer
That really is not too practical for a compact digital due to the fact that most of their lenses retract into the body when you turn them off. Most any camera shop should be able to come up with an adapter ring that snaps over the out side front edge of the lens, to take what ever filters you want, but you will most likely have to take it off when the camera is shut down. You also have white balance built in and, in some cases, some filers, so I'm not sure what kind of filters you think you need. That is one reason I up-graded from my Toshiba compact to my Pentax SLR and I keep a UV filter on all my lenses as they are one heck of a lot cheaper than a new lens. Also, I do use my polarizing filter quite a bit on my 18x55 lens.

What is the best 35mm digital camera that will hold an wide angel lens priced under $600?

Mark's Min

Hi,

I need a 35 mm digital camera that I can attach a wide angel lens too. Obviously, I would also buy a separate compatible wide a angel lens. I would like at least 10 mega pixel and would like a camera. I can only spend $600 which includes any taxes.. Any ideas?

Answer
any of the modern digital SLR's (dSLR's) will be suitable

but there are few if any 35mm dSLR's in your budget, AFAIK only top end dSLR's like the Canon EOS..but they cost multi thousands

it comes down to what you call a wide angle lens. moder dSLR's tend to use smaller sensors than 35mm film format.. hence they have a so called 35mm equivalent.. for most thats around 1.25 to 1.5 times 35mm, for four thirds cameras (Olympus & Panasonic) this factor is twice. so they may produc e a lens which optically is 14-50mm zoom is quoted at 28-100mm equivalent for Olympus, or 32-75mm at 1.5 times

so having said that any dSLR with a suitable lens will do the job. despite what some people say I don't think there is as big a difference between the makes as people say. so go to a camera shop and make your own mind up as to which camera you like. theres is an argument that buying a Canon or Nikon on the basis that you may be able to get cheaper lenses secondhand on EBAY or similar, and that mey be true. Its also true that Nikon Canon and others built dSLR's that could use a photographers exisitng lenses.., anoither of the rreasons given why Cznonor Nikon may be better/// I'd argue the Olympus approach of starting from scratch desiging lenses for the digital requirements a smarter approach.. fourthirds lenses tend to be smaller and lighter.

An alternative approach would be to find a suitable lens and then buy the best camera body you want (remembering to allow for things like memory cards, protective filter, camera gadget bag, card reader etc....)

there is a steep learning curve to get the best out of the camera

I have an 18-55mm canon lens. I bought a new 28-135 lens, but I want to get it down to the 18mm range so I can get rid of the other lens. Is there a way to do this? Is there a wide angle lens that can drop this 10mm? It looks like a ton on ebay, but i'm afraid it would either kill my quality or give me a fish eye lens. Any help in the right direction would be appreciated!

Answer
You need to buy a 10-22 mm wide angle zoom

You really need to take at least one class in photography to understand why your question shows your lack of understanding of the fundamentals of photography.

You seem to be one of those people who are intelligent, but uninformed. A class will clear up a lot of misconceptions.

How does Sigma glass compare to Canon glass in general?

Tobasco

I've never shot with a lens that Canon didn't make, and I'm wondering if looking at other brands might be a good idea? I've heard lots of varying reports about different Sigma lenses. In your experience, how does the optical quality of a Sigma lens generally compare to that of an equivalent Canon lens?

Answer
On the lower end canon lenses it's not such a big difference. But overall, canon lenses (especially the high priced ones) are higher quality than sigma.

But the value of Sigma lenses make them great purchases. You can usually get several excellent sigma lenses for the cost of just one Canon L-series lens

Hi, I'm interested in photography. We've already got a digital camera, but it is a few years old, and I'd like one for myself. I'd take pictures of mostly nature or stuff like that.

The thing is I'd like to spend <$100, and I wouldn't mind used, as long is it would have a warranty or something.

Thanks

Answer
For a entry level digital camera, check out the "Canon PowerShot A590IS 8MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom" for $100 on amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0011ZCDKS/?tag=youheardither-20 Get a nice 4gb sdhc memory card for 9$ on amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000JMJWV2/?tag=youheardither-20 and you'll be set. At the highest quality rating you should be able to capture about 800 pictures on the 4GB card with this camera.

The reasons why I recommend this camera is:

1. Canon brand, experience, quality, and past success
2. 100$, just at your budget
3. Image Stabilization on Lens - this feature will reduce the picture blur that is caused by shaky hands or long exposures.
4. 4x optical zoom - don't buy into the marketing jargon of digital zoom. Digital zoom is just cropping the existing picture and is worthless. Optical zoom is what you want.
5. Uses AA batteries which make replacing them convenient when traveling.
6. 435 reviewers on amazon and a 4.5 out of 5 star average rating.

If you are interested in entering the world of DSLR's you will need to increase your budget to about 400-600 dollars. There are other cameras that will begin to open up the possibilities and art of photography to you in the 300$ dollar range like the Canon SX10IS ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001G5ZTZO/?tag=youheardither-20 ) or the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18K ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000TM7GD8/?tag=youheardither-20 ) but those are also a bit out of your stated budget.

Hope this helps. Good luck and happy shooting!

Profession photographers, I have a question?

Q. I'm new, but I love the look that camera's, like Nikon, the professional give.
yeah, i probably have no idea what i'm talking about.
but i want a camera like that for my birthday.
i know they're super expensive so i was going to buy a new/refurbished one.
& i'm starting to take a class once a week :)
any suggestions on what camera's to look at?
you know much more than i do.

Answer
Hi I'm a Professional Photographer and Photo Coach and the two camera makes you should stick to are Canon & Nikon - there is not much in it. This is the advice I give all beginners get an entry level DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) and put a fairly decent prime lens on the body. As a basic given all entry level camera come with a 'Kit lens' this will probably be an 18-55mm this will be ok to get started but will not produce images as good as an £80 F1.8 50mm lens. If you don't understand all the number jargon - don't worry you will in time and see the importance of the Lens and not the body. For instance you could buy a Canon 10D or 20D for little money and buy a lens for £80 then your off taking photos. Good luck, Paul Hames

Some websites say it's SLR some say it's DSLR.

How do I know that my camera is DSLR or SLR ?

Answer
Film SLR

and

Digital SLR

Both are SLR's.

The 'SLR' refers to the type of camera (Single Lens Reflex), the film or digital refers to the format.

A 35mm SLR can only be called an SLR, your camera can be called either an SLR or a DSLR, both are correct.

.

How can I attach a new Canon lens on an old film SLR Canon camera?

Kaffrizles

I want to use the new standard macro Canon lens (white square) on an old SLR camera (EOS 650) which requires lens with the red dot indication. Is it possible? Do it need to find an adapter? If so, where and how much??

Thanks

Answer
If you have the Canon EF-S 60mm macro lens it CANNOT be used on your EOS 650 35mm film camera. Only Canon EF lenses can be used on your film camera or a full-frame Canon DSLR (6D, 5D, 1D). Even with extension tubes the image circle will still likely be too small to cover the entire 35mm film frame which will result in vignetting (dark corners on your image).

How far does a 18x55mm camera zoom?

I'm looking at a canon t2i dslr camera I've only owned point and shoot my last camera had26x zoom and I'm wondering how much a 18x55mm lens zooms I usually take landscape sunrises &sunsets photos the camera comes with 18x55mm.Wondering if I need to get another lens for these type of shots.

Answer
Zoom doesn't apply to DSLRs. The 18-55 (not 18X55) is fine for portraits and landscapes. For now, just get the 18-55 and use it for a few months. After a few months, you'll have figured out if 1) you want a wider lens - 10-22) 2) you want a lens with more reach - 55-250. When lens shopping, avoid the 75-300 - they're junk

What is the best camera lens for swimming?

Nour

I'm getting my first DSLR camera (Canon Rebel T3i) and i was wondering what lens would be the best for an indoor swimming pool with a not so great light setting. I'm guessing it should have a good enough zoom as well. Thanks in advance :)
Also, if its possible, my budget is around 200-400 dollars. Thanks again.

Answer
Don't go within 20 feet of the water - some kid will see you and think a great game would be to splash water at the guy with the camera! The T3i is not weather sealed so Water plus T3i equals dead camera.

Lowest cost option would be an EFS 55-250 F/4-5.6 IS and crank up the ISO.
Best option would be an EF 70-200 F/2.8 L IS - but that is $1500+

What is the best digital SLR camera or Interchangeable lens camera?

dslr lens stuck on camera image

David

I'm a beginner looking into some cameras. I want a camera that has a lot of room to grow with and isn't necessarily the most expensive nor the cheapest on the market. I am also stuck in between getting a DSLR or Interchangeable lens camera. I'm looking at the Sony NEX 5N, NEX 7, Nikon V1, among some other Nikon and Canon DSLR cameras.

Answer
The "best"? Nikon D4 or Canon 1D X

The best entry level dSLR would be the Nikon D3200 or Canon 1100D

If you want a smaller camera with interchangeable lenses then the Nikon V1 would be better than the J1

What brand of dslr cameras do you recommend?

ohemgeelaf

I'm always having trouble about what dslr cameras to buy? There's so many different kinds out there and I'm stuck.. (the prices are always changing too) What do you recommend? I really want a nice camera that's about $500-$1000, including lenses. Is it better to buy lenses separate or with? What brand do you consider top quality? Thanks.

Answer
If you don't feel like reading anything else, just get a Nikon D40.

It's a wonderful camera, and is the best entry-level DSLR out there. It's fast, lightweight, CHEAP, and opens up the entire range of Nikon lenses (the best in the world) to you.

You see, you buy an SLR for the lenses. That's where the real quality comes from. You're going to update your DSLR body every few years anyways, but lenses will last decades. You might be only able to get a D40 body now, but in five years, you might want a $2000 Nikon.

My advice is to get the D40 and to buy a very nice lens (or two).

I like taking pictures, especially of my kids. I want to buy a good camera for those priceless moments. I don't know a thing about cameras or photography but I love looking at those professional photos and I would love to get those results on my photos. Someone suggested the Nikon d5100 but I have been reading and the dslr cameras don't have a lot of zoom. I would have to buy an extra lens to get a good zoom and even with an extra lens, I wouldn't get a great zoom like some other cameras like the canon SX40 Hs (35x). I know that they are completely different type of cameras. (Honestly don't know why). But I would like to know what kind of camera would be good for me, even if I need an extra lens, for me to get amazing photos and a good zoom for taking far away pictures (soccer games, etc). Please explain in plain english because again I know nothing about cameras. :-/

"I don't know a thing about cameras or photography but I love looking at those professional photos and I would love to get those results on my photos."

It's not the camera, it;s the person behind it that is important. The camera is just a box and some glass that aptures light. the PHOTOGRAPHER is the one that decides what light get's captured and how the box captures it.

The camea doesn;t know anything about composition (ok so a couple of them are able to guess at the rule of thirds), the cmaera won;t know if the person's pose is bad, the camera won;t know that moving 3 feet to the left will give you better light ... you, as the photographer, have to see this before you press the shutter. YOU make the decision of what to include in the scene, when to take the shot.

No camera, will give you good results if you don't learn about photography ... none at all. all you'll ever get are porrly composed snapshots that are porrly exposed because you are letting the camera do the thinking.

Just to give you an idea ... this is the tpe of picture i was takicng when I got my first DSLR.

This is what I shoot now:

http://flic.kr/p/dmngSV
http://flic.kr/p/dmngWo

What has changed over the last 6 years? My understanding of photography.

So that being said, pick up your D5100 ... see if you can get a two lens kit (18-55 and 55-200) and that should have you well set in terms of lenses. Then spend a bit on a basic DSLR course and learn about photography ... just don;t expect to be creating stunning images right off the bat.

How much impact will a 1.6x crop factor have on my photography?

lollerskat

I am planning to buy a dSLR camera soon, the Rebel XSi and because it has a APS-C sensor, there will be a crop factor of 1.6x when I use an EF lens for it. I am told to invest in EF lenses but I am worried if the crop factor will have a large impact on it. What if I wanted a wide angle lens? How much will the crop factor impact the ability of this wide-angle lens?

Answer
A great answer by Pooky, my compliments to him on such a clear explanation of the visual effect of this - it's a good question too.

If you know about lenses in 35mm terms the 1.6 factor will make a big difference:
10mm > (acts like) 16mm (in comparison to 35mm)
20mm > 32mm
28mm > 45mm (so a normally pretty wide lens on a 35mm camera will act like a standard 50mm!)
50mm > 80mm (a standard 35mm lens would act like a moderate telephoto / portrait type lens)
75mm > 120mm

This means many digital SLR digital photographers don't have anything more than a moderately wide lens in their armoury, this is a very limiting factor for a surprising number of photographic situations - interiors, candid work in crowded spaces, low light situations, places where you can't step back any further, etc.

The implication is that you need to think very differently for what would normally (in 35mm terms) be considered a very wide lens.. and what may initially seem really wide, isn't at all!

To put this into context, this is not going to worry a wildlife, sports, or paparazzi / surveillance photographer at all. For most other purposes it's like losing a key part of your armoury.

I've been professional for 18 years now and all but a few dozen images out of many thousands were taken on lenses under 100mm in 35mm terms. It's subject driven but I'd guess I use wide lenses probably around 15-30% of the time.

I have used point and shoot cameras for 2 years and would love to graduate to digital SLR cameras.
I would prefer a camera which is not too new in the market.

Answer
For that price your best bet would be the Nikon D40. It will run slightly under $500.

If you have a few extra dollars you can look at the Canon Rebel XTi or XSi and the Nikon D60.

What is the best place to buy a cell phone and a SLR Camera Lens Thailand/Singapore?

varungatha

Hey Guys ..
Am kinda desperate to get an answer as i have no clue ..

I will down to Singapore and Thailand in the next week.
and the 2 things i must get are a Nice cell phone and a new lens for my SLR camera

Not what i wanna know which place is the BEST as in Cheapest and reliable place among Bangkok and Singapore .. and where in these cities specifically ?!

Thanks a lot! :)

Answer
In Singapore, you can find just about anything electronic in Sim Lim Square, but watch out, you really need to know your prices and exchage rates or your tech deal could wind up costing a lot more than you expected. Don't mistake Sim Lim Square with Sim Lim tower which is kitty corner from the Square. There are great bargains there, but only if you want electronic parts and components and it is quite a bit seedier there too. Sim Lim Square is big time high tech with many floors of merchants mostly selling the same things. Shops with the CaseTrust certificate are usually more trust-worthy.

Sorry, no suggestions in Bangkok, I have only been out near Pattaya on buisness and there were no tech bargains there. But food and clothing bargains were everywhere.

i want to know how much zoom a 50-200mm camera lens has in terms of optical zoom (ex: 15x optical zoom)

I'm not sure they understand your question.. a point and shoot with 15x zoom would typically range from about 30-450. quite a bit more zoom than a 50-200mm lens for a dslr

What is a good starter DSLR camera and lens for taking pictures of nature?

T

I guess my budget for this would be for around $700 total (maybe a little more). I want really nice, sharp pictures (I do understand that I will most likely also need to use photoshop)

Answer
starter DSLR cameras are called Entry Level DSLRs.

There are dozens of such cameras that would suit a beginner. The brand is irrelevant. Here's a list with reviews: http://www.dpreview.com/products/search/cameras#criterias=SpecsCoreParams&includeDiscontinued=No&sort=lowestPriceFirst&view=list&page=1¶mSpecsCoreParamsBodyType=CompactSLR%2CMidSizeSLR%2CLargeSLR

"I want really nice, sharp pictures" - sorry this has nothing to do with the camera, or using Photoshop.

Only a skilled photographer can take nice sharp pictures. Of course there is nothing to say you won't be able to learn the skills required. But if you are expecting the camera to do it all for you, then you are sorely mistaken.

Most of a good image's quality is down to the skill of the photographer, the quality of the lenses comes next, and way down on the list of factors which lead to good photos is the camera body itself.
