I just recently purchased a canon rebel t3i and am curious what the best accessories are for this camera. I am going to be going on vacation to Florida and later this year to France. What should I get to better my pictures on these vacations. I have a 55-200mm lens and a 15-85 mm lens. Also do polarizing filters work good and which one should I invest in.

How do I autofocus on the Canon Rebel T3i?

asdkjf

How do I autofocus on the video setting on the Canon Rebel T3i? I've heard that you can't, because the whole Rebel series don't have it. But is there another way to manually focus it without stopping the clip?
Thanks!

Answer
indeed, you cannot autofocus while shooting video

you can always set the lens to manual focus and focus that way

best camera lens for outdoor portraits image

Tamara

I have a canon rebel sxi and currenlty only have the standard lens that came with the camera. I am trying to get into some outdoor portrait photography. (currently practicing on anyone who is willing to let me). Is there a certain type/brand of lens that is better for outdoor portrait?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I am new to the whole photography thing...

Answer
The lens you have is just about perfect for shooting outdoor portraits.

Have you tried using it? If you shoot in the shade, you will avoid a lot of problems associated around shooting people outdoors during the day.

You could buy a good Canon 50 mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 lens, but until you have your portrait shooting skills down, you may want to spend some money on more memory cards or even a 5 in 1, 42 inch reflector kit

What type of a camera lens would you recommend for taking outdoor portraits?

Someone

I'm doing a shoot with my friend, and I own a Canon Rebel XSi.

I have a 50mm f/1.8 and the kit lens (18-55mm).

I'm thinking to use the 50mm, but are there any ones I should try out? I have money to get a new lens.

Answer
Yep the 50mm f/1.8 you already have its great for outdoor portraits. But if you want to get another lens for portraits the best option are fixed lenses because they tend to be sharper than zoom lenses. Also another advantage of using fixed lenses is that you get more creative because you are forced to step close or farther when trying to recompose your image, and you can get nice photos trying new angles and distances. Some photographers seem to anchor themselves to one spot when they have a zoom lens.

I for example, use the macro 2.8 L USM IS lens for outdoor portraits. I actually use that lens all the time, i just love it. Its great for portrait and macro and also i can get really cool macro shots from the face.

But you will learn that depening on the lens you get you will take different types of pictures. A wide angle lens will give you another bizarre point of view for portraits. I mean it all depends on what tyoe of portraits you want to do. Just image and decide which lens you want to work with.

My list of great portrait lenses.
macro 100 mm L USM IS
28-70mm
70-200mm
50mm 1.4 or 1.2
the 85mm one its amazing too

havea great day

I just bought the canon 40d. I have a 28-135mm lens. But that is all I have. I would like to start a small business taking outdoor portraits to begin with. I also would like to know what the best editing software is out there.

Answer
You have the camera and a decent portrait zoom.

Other things you would need(at a minumum from my experience):

A hotshoe flash for fill.
A softbox/Demb Diffuser/Lightsphere for the hotshoe flash to diffuse/soften the light.
Reflectors(white/silver/gold)
Tripod
Diffusing material - sometimes in direct sun, the light can be too bright and you'll want to cut it with soemthing like a pure white bedsheet or similar. It gives you a nice softbox light effect and not the direct, hard light.

Other things that would be nice, but not necessarily required:
An assistant
battery powered hotlights or flashes with umbrellas for portable light
a stand for holding the reflectors

The BEST editing software out there is Photoshop CS3. However, unless you are going to need extensive retouching or graphical design capabilities, I woul recommend looking into Adobe Lightroom of Photoshop Elements 6.0. Both will have 99% of what a photographer needs to do good post production work on their images.
Lightroom is $200 and Elements is $79(i believe).

I still use Photoshop CS2, only because I have been using Photoshop since version 7 and I know the tool and it's cheap to upgrade. If I were just starting out now, I would probably get Lightroom.

What's the best way to find a cheap lens (good for portraits) for a digital camera?

spooligan

I'm an aspiring photographer who's really into the artistic side of the field. I'm really into portraits and outdoor photography. I recently bought a $600 digital rebel xt but because i wasn't paying attention I didn't realize until too late that it came without a lens. So now i'm left with a camera with no lens. What's the best way to shop for a lens when you're on a low budget?

Answer
The Canon 50mm 1.8 for around $80 new makes a great portrait lens on a DSLR.

Not only is it one of the least expensive lenses available for your camera, it's also one of the sharpest.

Where can you buy cameras that they use to film movies?

best camera lens rental site on Glidecam Body Pod
best camera lens rental site image

Haz1976554

Or rent

Answer
Hi "Haz":

Since Y!A is a world-wide site, when asking a "where" Question it always helps to say what part of the world you are in.

And if we can interpret your post literally, meaning actual photographic film cinema cameras (as opposed to digital video cinema cameras), then the simplest answer is Panavision Inc., which is probably the largest cinema rental company in the world. They also rent digital video cameras for cinema use, like their Panavision Genesis camera and the Red One Epic cameras used for the new "Oz The Great and Powerful". Panavision started out in the 1950's supplying anamorphic (widescreen) lenses when Cinemascope became a popular widescreen format. They later started making their own line of cameras to rent with their special lenses.

Most movie companies don't buy their gear, they rent, since the cost is very high (a good anamorphic lens alone can cost $10,000 - $20,000 easily).

Panavision only rents (except for older gear that they sell off), but other camera makers like ARRI (short for Arnold + Richter) in Germany and Aaton in France sell their camera gear to companies, dealers, and individuals. Digital-only cinema camera makers like Sony and RED sell their products directly or through dealers throughout the world. Smaller cinema supply companies sell & rent cameras of both kinds (film & video), and are tailored to dealing with people in their region.

The topic of professional cinema cameras is one of those "if you have to ask, you can't afford it" propositions. And if you have to ask where to get the equipment, you probably don't know enough to use it correctly, much less afford it.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

Rent out a starter Digital SLR?

WannabeTec

Do you think it might be financially beneficial if I purchased a "backup" digital camera from ebay to rent to college students for the semester?

If so, how much should I charge them? Per month or per semester?

I can buy a Rebel XT for anout $400 new on ebay. In the store they cost about 7 hundred dollars.

I have just had people ask to borrow my digital (something I don't do.) I thought if i had a camera specifically meant to be loaned out I could profit as well as help out a few struggling students.
29 minutes ago - 3 days left to answer.
Additional Details

I would of course have them sign a contract regarding damage to the camera (but mine is under warranty so if they break it no big deal-I have coverage) in addition to a deposit (of about $250? or is that too high?) they would get back when they returned the camera.

I was planning on only lending it to students in the photography program.

Daily: $15
Weekly: $50
Weekends: $20 a day
Are these costs affordable? Or too high or low?
I dont think I'd trust photo students who have had ONLY one or two classes with a 5D or anything above an easily replaceable XT.

If they want that kind of camera they can go to the camera store and pay $75 a day.

Answer
You might be onto something here. I checked around and found this, for instance: http://www.aperturepro.com/digital_canon.html

I'm sure you've looked into similar sites. You are charging around 10% of what they are charging, so I'd say your rates are certainly fair to the renter - if not to you. By the time you get a camera and lens, even used, you will have over $500 in your rental piece. It would take about a year of average renting (I think) for your return on investment to pay for the camera. If people treat rental cameras the way they treat rental cars, a lower level DSLR might not last a year!

The deposit would have to cover the cost of a new camera and this would be the hang-up for most students. Yeah, they'd get their money back, but I imagine if they asked Daddy for deposit money, he would say, "Why don't you just buy your own darn camera?" I know I would.

You could charge less than the value of the camera and cover the rest with insurance, but I imagine that would cost even more. I checked into a photo equipment rider on my homeowner's policy and I would be able to buy new equipment every three years for the amount of additional premium I'd pay for adequate coverage.

On the face of it, I like your idea. Your rentals seem fair and might be a little low, but you ARE dealing with a student population. Anticipate someone asking for an hourly rate and just say one hour equals one day and that's all there is to it. Do not get into renting memory cards. Anticipate someone wanting a 400 mm lens. You might buy a used 70-300 to rent for an additional $15-20 a day.

You are filling a need where there is no competition. Maybe you'll be rich one day.

However, I looked it up on the internet and many people said that's not how you should do it. So, what could I use?

Which Canon t2i value pack would be more worth my money?

best canon telephoto lens sports on Telephoto Photography | Canon Telephoto
best canon telephoto lens sports image

hellomichi

I am planning on buying the new Canon t2i and Best Buy has two separate packages available.
One includes an extra 75-300mm Zoom Lens and the other includes an extra 55-250mm f/4-5.6 Telephoto Zoom Lens. The telephoto lense is a little more money but only by like $100
I was wondering if anyone could tell me the differences between the lenses and which one would be more worth my time, if either.

Thanks!

Answer
I would go w the 75-300mm zoom. I have a Canon Rebel and the 75-300mm Zoom

Factor on the camera is 1.6, so 1.6 times length of your lens gives you the effective length.

18-55 becomes 28 to 88

75-300 becomes 120 to 480

Unless you need a wide angle lens, or a macro lens, you pretty much have it covered.

18-55 general photography and landscapes
75-300 sports, and things you can't (don't want) to get close too.
wide angle - journalism. get the big picture
macro - real closeup work
80- to 105 portraits (use high end of 18-55 (28-88), or low end of 75-300(120-480)

What's the best telephoto lens to buy for a Canon Rebel Xsi?

tonym08329

You can list the best overall lens as well as the best one for the money.

Answer
The best for the money really depends on your budget since you get what you pay for, or what you need it for. A pro sports shoot would probably go for the 400 f/2.8 or 70-200 f/2.8 or both. A bird photographer might go for the 500 f/4 or 400 f/5.6. Someone on a budget might consider the 18-200, 75-300 or 70-300. On average though, the best telephoto for the money seems to be the 70-200 f/4 non IS which goes for around $600. Its an L lens and the cheapest one by a bit. Its very sharp and very well built and has excellent image quality. If I wanted to spend under $1000 for a telephoto lens and didnt need an f/2.8 aperture that lens would be it.

Hi! I am a beginner with cameras so I don't really know whats good. I want to buy a good digital camera with interchangeable lens's and I want the camera to have a good battery life. Also I like High quality pictures so like a high mega pixel camera would be nice. Also Nothing really expensive like I don't know nothing over $200? I really want a good camera. Thank you!!!!! :)

Answer
There are no DSLR's under $200. if you don't want to spend more money on a camera than a DSLR is not for you! their lenses can cost more than the body.

For $200 look in to a Nikon L120 or any of the Nikon point and shoot cameras.
that's what I had to start out with, don't think you cant get a great picture with a point and shoot!

But if you do end up making your budget higher than I would recommend getting a Nikon D3100, Perfect for beginners like yourself!

Can Digital camera LENS be affected by direct exposure to SUN rays?

helix

i accidentaly exposed my digital camera lens (Sony DSC-H5) to direct sun rays for a second or 2 on the worst case.. ..

will this affect the quality and performance of the camera?

i just noticed that in the finder lcd any source of light produce virtical blue -or magenta- lines.. but when i capture the image it is clear from any lines.. is this normal?

Answer
Direct sunlight will not hurt the lens, but it can be harmful to the image sensor of your camera. Sunlight can be magnified by the lens and damage the individual image cells on the surface of the sensor. This is usually more of an issue if the sensor is subject to prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, especially any camera with a live preview [most point and shoot digital cameras]. I would imagine your camera is fine, just don't do what you did too many times. Your lens is fine.

What is the best Nikon camera to buy??
THe best for the price...
And i want it to take good macro pics and action shots?

My price range is probably anywhere up to $800.

Answer
There are 4 cameras wtih lenses from nikon in that range D80, D60, D40x, D40.

The D80 is much more flexible and can use many more nikon and third party lenses than the others models and therefore is the best

As far as a macro lens, I would start with the kit 18-55, add a close-up lens (52 mm filter). If you need better then buy a true macro lens like a 60 mm nikon.

For sports, a good starter lens is 55-200 vr or an 70-300 G. Your next step would be 80-200 f 2.8 or 70-300 VR.

I have never owned a DSLR camera and was just looking for the best quality bang for the buck camera. I had considered the new D7100, but read some flaws with oil getting on the sensor. Not to mention I figure I would be paying for a bunch of buttons and features I would not know how to use for a long long time.. The Nikon D5200 at Costco is 1050.00 for the entire kit with 2 lenses..
http://www.costco.com/Nikon-D5200-DSLR-Camera-2-Lens-Bundle.product.100032348.html
What do you think? I know this is a loaded questions and don't want to start a war between all of you Canon/Nikon rivals.. haha

Answer
I own a Nikon D5100 and I absolutely love this camera. I considered the D5200 but it was over my budget. The D5200 has 24.1 megapixels and nobody really needs that many unless you're going to print large poster-sized prints. My D5100 has 16.2MP and it's more than enough for printing nice pictures up to 11x14, even bigger pics than that would probably turn out nicely.

The D5200 has the Wi-Fi feature which can be nice if you have a smartphone and want to quickly send a picture from your camera to your smartphone so you can email it, post it on facebook, twitter, etc. I kinda wished mine had that feature but I'd just as well pop the sd-card into my computer and upload it that way. I'm sure there are many other uses for the wi-fi adapter but that's the only one that I know about.

One thing to always remember when buying sd-cards is to get the high-speed ones, like 20 or 30Mbps. The D5200 can take 5 frames per second which is great for sports or at the racetrack so you cannot use the regular slow cards (like the 16GB one that comes in that kit) in a DSLR if you're going to be taking rapid-fire/burst shots.

What's nice about the extra lens is that it's a 300mm so you can zoom in on things that are really far away. My D5100 kit, got it at Best Buy, came with an extra 55-200mm lens which is nice but would've rather had the 300. It's more versatile given the wider range.

That Nikon (like mine) has a vari-angle LCD monitor which I can guarantee you will love. For example, you can tilt the monitor out and downward to be able to raise the camera above the heads in a crowd and take pictures of something like a band on stage. Or, you can put the camera at or near ground level and with the monitor tilted upward, you can take pics of kids or pets without getting on your knees. Trust me, that feature is so nice to have!

If you can afford it, I'd say go for it! You wont be disappointed. I'd suggest getting on YouTube and watching a lot of tutorials. There are tons of good ones. I've learned a lot about my Nikons from watching them. You can also do some awesome night photography with it. My first DSLR was a Nikon D40 (still have it) and it took me a long time to get familiar with working the advanced controls but it's worth the investment if you want to take incredible pics! Be sure to get the insurance on it though, one good drop and it'll become an expensive paperweight.

Here's a Nikon D5200 In-Depth Review: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikon-d5200

What camera to get my Girlfriend? Please help?

Magic

My girlfriend is a beginner this will be her first camera and i know for a fact she wants a DSLR not a digital compact camera. She really likes Nikon. A few months ago she we were looking at the cameras in bestbuy and she seemed to like the Nikon D3200 and the Nikon D5100....

I have no knowledge of cameras.. I have three questions...

1.Which one of these would be best to get her the Nikon D3200 or the Nikon D5100??

2. do all Nikon lens fit those or how do i know what lens to get?

3. Should i buy it from a store like best buy or see if i could find it on craigslist or ebay somthing like that??

Answer
I think The Nikon D3200 would be the best. The price is Good And it will be an easy camera to Learn with.
The Nikon D3200 Is a DX format camera. so it will take DX format lenses. Simple enough. Film lenses will also fit the D3200. If you are not up to paying for digital lenses. But the only downside to film lenses is that they are manual not auto.

I would buy brand new from either bestbuy or another store that sells cameras.
You should get a bundle with the camera. camera, lens, and some accessories. great deals.. Just look on best buy.com

Good luck.

I like taking pictures, especially of my kids. I want to buy a good camera for those priceless moments. I don't know a thing about cameras or photography but I love looking at those professional photos and I would love to get those results on my photos. Someone suggested the Nikon d5100 but I have been reading and the dslr cameras don't have a lot of zoom. I would have to buy an extra lens to get a good zoom and even with an extra lens, I wouldn't get a great zoom like some other cameras like the canon SX40 Hs (35x). I know that they are completely different type of cameras. (Honestly don't know why). But I would like to know what kind of camera would be good for me, even if I need an extra lens, for me to get amazing photos and a good zoom for taking far away pictures (soccer games, etc). Please explain in plain english because again I know nothing about cameras. :-/

Answer
"I don't know a thing about cameras or photography but I love looking at those professional photos and I would love to get those results on my photos."

It's not the camera, it;s the person behind it that is important. The camera is just a box and some glass that aptures light. the PHOTOGRAPHER is the one that decides what light get's captured and how the box captures it.

The camea doesn;t know anything about composition (ok so a couple of them are able to guess at the rule of thirds), the cmaera won;t know if the person's pose is bad, the camera won;t know that moving 3 feet to the left will give you better light ... you, as the photographer, have to see this before you press the shutter. YOU make the decision of what to include in the scene, when to take the shot.

No camera, will give you good results if you don't learn about photography ... none at all. all you'll ever get are porrly composed snapshots that are porrly exposed because you are letting the camera do the thinking.

Just to give you an idea ... this is the tpe of picture i was takicng when I got my first DSLR.

What has changed over the last 6 years? My understanding of photography.

So that being said, pick up your D5100 ... see if you can get a two lens kit (18-55 and 55-200) and that should have you well set in terms of lenses. Then spend a bit on a basic DSLR course and learn about photography ... just don;t expect to be creating stunning images right off the bat.

Lenses and depths of field on DSLR cameras?

Sabasaurus

I'm looking at a DSLR and I'm noticing the camera lenses. Can someone explain to me the differences in them? Does one particular lens only work for certain aperatures? Will a f/5.6 lens give me ONLY a shallow depth of field? Or will it give me any type of depth of field?

Hopefully I explained that right.

Thanks for any help.

Answer
Main lens information is focal legth and apperture.

If you see a lens with 70-200mm f2.8-5.6 it means that the lens focal legth only goes from 70 to 200.
Now the F numbers at the front represent the minimum amount of aperture you can get at that focal length. For instance at 70mm you can get anything from 2.8 nothing below. This means that you can get 2.8 3.5 4 5.6 onward. Not at 200mm you cannot get any f-number below 5.6.

Some lenses have fixed aperture. For instance : 70-200mm f2.8. This lens can keep the 2.8 all the way from 70-200mm

Then there are the fixed (or prime) lenses. These have both fixed. For instance, the classical 50mm f1.8. These lenses cannot zoom but provide the best looking pictures in therms of quality and, since they don't zoom, they can have really low numbers aperture with amazing depth of field.

As for the depth of field question, a lens that is f2.8 will give you any field from f2.8 onward.

I'm confused a bit about all this, so how far can a 30mm telephoto camera lens go?

It depends on what camera sensor you are using, in terms of size.

whats one of the best dslr cameras for macro jewelry photography?

gmanz73

We are a looking for a high resolution dslr camera that can take clear sharp pictures of small jewelry items. What size lens should we look out for? whats a great camera thats recommended?

Answer
Any good camera would do. Its not mainly about the camera but the lens. The cameras i'd suggest are anything in the canon rebel line. You can look them up here:

http://amzn.to/rcdPoM

The lens that i would recommend is Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens. Its a great lens for insects, plants and anything that falls in that type of category and would be great for small jewelry too. I suggest you read this review:

I'm looking for one of the top cameras but with very far zoom. Or is the zoom dependent on the additional lens I get. I was looking mainly at the Nikon D7000. I see it is a great camera and one of the top. But is it capable of taking clear pictures from far. What type of lens would I want to get for it. Because I do go overseas to countries with a bunch of mountains. And I love to take pictures of other mountains while on top of one. Please help.

Answer
For what you ask what matters is the lens. As you still don't have the body, you will have to go for a camera kit and get a say 200 or longer one

What kind of lens should I bring to a concert event?

Alex

I am going to a lat e night concert soon and need help deciding on a lens I should bring with me for my Nikon D7000. I am sitting in the pits, up at the very front row!

Answer
Most concert venues won't allow a camera like a D7000 into the venue unless you are an accredited photographer there to take pictures. Before arriving there, first check what cameras they will allow. Most will onyl allow compacts, bridges and CSC cameras are a questionable category, csc cameras using a DSLR lens via an adapter are almost certainly not going to be allowed.

I bought this camera as a Christmas present (with the lens it comes with) and would like to buy the accessory of a reverse ring intended for reverse lens macro photography, but I don't know whether to buy a 52mm or a 58mm ring. What I'm gathering is that it's a 52mm, but I just want to make sure before purchasing the ring. Thanks in advance!

Answer
On the one of the lens you will see xxΦ (52Φ, 58Φ,72Φ,etcetera), this is the filter and/or cap size for that lens

The EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II uses a 58mm.

What is the best Canon camera for macro photography?

Kassidy

I love macro photography, not of flowers though, of bugs, objects, colorful things, basically anything that has small details, and i need a good camera that will allow me to get amazing pictures. I'm looking to buy from Canon or Nikon mainly, but if there are any other brands that have good macro cameras, could you give me some? It'd help out so much!

Answer
Not the camera, but the lens.

I want to be a photographer! What equipment is imperative to be a photographer? I have a camera and a few lenses but I want to know other equipment that I should buy and what everything does i.e. filters, lens hoods, reflectors and what equipment has changed photographers "lives".

Answer
What type of photography do you do are are interested in doing?

Studio lights are useless for someone doing sports or landscapes.
Macro lenses are useless for people doing fashion.
A super telephoto is useless to someone who does portraits.

I like doing portraiture so what changed it for me was my 50mm f1.8 and my first shoe mount flash. I now have a 24-70 f2.8 and a small portable (flash based) lighting kit I put together. In my case, the flash REALLY made a difference, but even more so when I started to understand how to REALLY use it.

What lens hood do I need for Nikon d5000?

Cole P

I have a Nikon d5000 and I need to buy a lens hood for it. I have the kit lens that comes with it. I am going to be outside taking photos in the bright sunlight.

Thank you!

Answer
Each lens hood is based upon the lens you are going to use it

My guess is you have the 18-55 mm standard lens, so Nikon 800.NIKON-UX, can tell you what you need for that lens or you can go to a camera store and have them supply it. You just have to assure that what ever hood you choose, does not cause vignetting when shooting at the widest focal length.

The Nikon websites says the correct one is the HB-45 Bayonet Lens Hood

How do you take completely clear pictures with a DSLR camera?

best type of camera lens on March 23, 2009. See new material under
best type of camera lens image

writerinto

Whenever I take pictures, regardless of the settings and all, my pictures are always blurred in the background. What type of settings would allow me to take pictures that aren't blurred in the background? And/or, what type of camera lens would help me achieve completely clear pictures? Thank you!

Answer
Two things influence depth of field

* aperture
* length of lens

Smaller apertures like f/16 or f/22 increase apparent depth of field

Shorter lenses like wide angle ones create greater depth of field. Long lenses, telephoto, reduce the depth of field

What kind of camera and lens is needed to take a picture of people spelling out words on a football field?

Dana

We will have to have about 1000 people in the photo. We are not sure how high we should be or the type of camera and lens to use. Also does anyone know how long it might take to arrange the people?

Answer
You could use a wide angle lens and take the picture from on top a ladder, but wide angle lenses tend to distort. That means the people in the middle will show okay, but the ones on the edges will look tiny and far away.

I'd go for something normal (35-55mm) from higher up, like a rooftop. A standard single lens reflex camera would work fine, either film or digital.

As for how long it takes to arrange them, try a practice run first to find out. I think it would depend on the people involved, and practicing would make it go faster and more smoothly.

What Canon EOS camera should I switch to?

Spongebob

I have a Canon EOS T2i at the moment and I want to switch to a better newer Canon DSLR. Im having a difficult time deciding. Im willing to spend around $1,700 but I want my money well spent. Please help!

Answer
Before you buy an upgraded camera, you need to consider adding to your lens collection.

Do you have a wide angle zoom (10-22 mm)?

Do you have a good telephoto lens (70-300 mm IS)?

Do you have a macro lens (60 mm f/2.8)?

Until you have a good selection of lenses and can use your T2i intuitively, the T2i is still an excellent camera and can do anything that the newer or more robust T5i, 70D or 7D

Note: Andrew is right

I shoot professionally and the five year old (almost six) Nikon D300 is still working just great and I feel no limitations. I will probably upgrade to the D400 when it becomes available, but that is after a good run using the D300. My D3 is just as old and it has at least a few years left before I need to think of replacing it.

What lens is compatible with the original lens that came with the Canon EOS 7ne?

jay u

I want to buy a used Canon EOS 7NE from Ebay. It is just the body without the lens. I am looking to buy a lens that will fully work with this camera. I am thinking of getting a non-Canon lens, since those lenses seem to cost much more than what I can afford at this time. What is a good lens that is compatible with the Canon lens that came with this camera? I believe this camera was sold with the EF 28-200mm. Thanks.

Answer
You can use ANY Canon EF lens.

Do NOT attempt to use any Canon EF-S lenses. They will damage the cameras mirror and the cameras mirror will scratch the rear element of the lens
