What is a good camera for beginners in photography? I need one that is good quality and will last a long time. Does anyone have any suggestions? And the price range needs to be from 200-300 dollars.

Thanks :)

Answer
A Lumix (like a DMC-FZ40) perhaps. Excellent optics and quality. Don't neccesarily buy new, go to ebay and find someone with excellent feedback and possibly with a memory card thrown it.

Takes lots of pictures. Look at other people's and decide what it is you like and find your own style. Learn to use Photoshop (your 'darkroom') or a cheap alternative - they all do the same thing.

See www.kenrockwell.com for excellent articles on photography that don't just dwell on equipment and lenses. Good luck!

What kind of camera do i need to take professional looking pictures of landscapes and portraits?

sweet_smil

Hi there thanks for reading my question. I would like to know if anyone can help me with advise. What kind of cameras, lenses and accessories do i need to be able to take professional type photos of landscapes and people and what computer software is good to edit and touch up pictures? I am wanting to start photography as a hobby and join a class but want to know what type of equipment i will be needing so they can show me how to use it properly.

thanks

Answer
The first thing you need to learn is this: "It isn't the camera, its the photographer." A person knowledgeable about light, f-stops, composition, shutter speeds and ISO and skilled in their use can produce excellent pictures with just about any camera.

The second thing you need to learn is: "Get it right in the camera." A poorly exposed and composed picture can't be salvaged with the most sophisticated editing program.

I strongly suggest finding a course first before buying a camera. If the course is a really good one you will find yourself using a 100% manual 35mm film camera. Yes, a film camera. My granddaughter will be taking photography in high school this Fall and the first requirement listed was a manual 35mm film camera. I've been teaching her to use my ancient Minolta SRT-202 so she'll be ahead of the class when it begins.

The best thing using a 35mm film camera will teach you is to slow down. In my opinion digital cameras cause people to develop what I call the "machine gunner mentality" - take 300 pictures and hope a few turn out. That is nothing more than taking snapshots. It isn't photography. "Pictures are not taken, they are made." Ansel Adams.

Honestly now - if you take 300 lousy pictures and have no idea why they're lousy what have you learned? Other than how to take 300 lousy pictures. I encourage developing what I call the "sniper mentality" - one exposure, one good picture. This requires thinking and thinking requires time. Most beginners see a scene, think "Oh, pretty!" and immediately snap the shutter. A snapshot is the result. Instead of just snapping away, slow down and look at the scene. Standing. Kneeling. Sitting down. Lying flat on your belly. Move a few feet right. Move a few feet left. Back up. Get closer. Maybe that flower looks pretty in the sunlight but suppose you get behind it and look at it with the sun shining through the petals?

http://www.flickr.com/photos/drifter45h/3583620746/

http://www.flickr.com/photos/drifter45h/3581810196/ Yes, people were staring at me as I laid on my belly in wet grass to take this but I think it was worth the effort.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/drifter45h/2364791076/ These hybrid magnolia buds were boring in direct light but when I got behind them I made this picture.

So find a class and get the camera required. If its a DSLR, Sony, Pentax, Olympus, Nikon and Canon all offer excellent choices. Its its a film camera, the Pentax K1000 has been the student camera of choice for decades.

LISTEN n L

I've noticed for a while that it is popular for girls to put their phone in their back pocket with part of the phone sticking up. Just recently I have noticed that the camera lens is usually the part sticking up.

Are girls recording us guys while we get a peek?

If any of you ladies have tried this I would love to see the vids, that would be hilarious! I bet going up escalators would get some interesting captures.

Answer
I actully know a lot of girls that do that and i am one of them. girls do that either for teo reasons 1 is to see who is checkin them out and 2nd is so they can see what there doing.

How to protect the camera lens on the galaxy s4 against scratches ?

Lester

I'm worried about the camera lens getting scratches , and can getting scratches affect image quality

Answer
The "lens" you see isn't really the camera lens. Obviously the phone carriers have thought about how many scratches you would get on the lens and already did something about it. They that little glass thing on it. Whether it's glass or whatever it is, it's not the lens, it's just the lens covering. That's why you can get a fingerprint and you can't really tell when you take the photo. But if you want to protect that, which usually should be fine, then you would have to buy one of those full body plastic screen covers. They would cover the entire phone in a plastic wrap almost. Basically it's just putting screen protectors all over your phone and they should also cover the camera lens cover from scratches and other things like dust. But that might actually affect the camera quality because the plastic on the lens might distort the image, but it can be removed easily.

Which is a good landscape lens for Canon 1000D?

best canon zoom lens for beginner on Best DSLR Camera for the Money in 2013/2014 | Best Cameras for the ...
best canon zoom lens for beginner image

Pixie Dust

I do a lot of landscape photography, and i'm looking for a good lens. I've got the Canon 1000D and i'm looking for a wide angle zoom lens with an image stabilizer. I'm still a beginner photographer, so nothing too professional and expensive. Thank you so much!

Answer
Due to what some call the crop factor the equivalent field of view of any lens you put on the 1000D is going to multiply by 1.6x. In effect then a wide focal length of 28mm would be equivalent to 45mm on a standard 35mm or full frame camera.

Because of this wide angle is something that is more difficult to accomodate for in APS-C sensor cameras (although you get the benefit of the telephoto end).

Lenses like the Sigma 10-20mm and Tamron 10-24mm can still be considered wide angle and would be fine for landscape work. Even the wide end of something like the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 'kit replacement' lens would work.

IS/OS isnt as important in my opinion. Landscapes tend to use narrow apertures for front-to-back sharpness in the focus so longer shutter speeds tend to be required. For this reason handholding would be a waste of time and a tripod would be needed. Long shutter speeds are also the preserve of the landscape photographer so again a tripod - rather than lens IS/OS - would be needed.

Which is the best manual camera for beginner?

Mr. curios

I have both cameras? but the problem is which is better? the canon AE-1 Or the Olympus OM-10? or explain a brief summary because my professor told me to stick with canon AE-1 camera I mean is it a big deal why? Can you please explain I just dont want them do be angry with me thats all? Oh which len are better especially the zoom lens as well.

Answer
The OM-10 is not manual unless you have the extra cost plug-in device that turns into a manual camera.
The AE-1 does have a manual setting and that is why your tutor says to stick with it. If you didn't have the AE-1 the he or she would probably recommend something even simpler like a Pentax K1000 (there are many similar K mount cameras from other makers) or even a screw mount Pentax or Praktica (or similar).
For A beginner with a good tutor I'd always recommend a Praktica screw mount because they are simple to operate, generally use easily obtainable batteries that are only needed to power the light meter and their standard lenses are usually high quality. Plus, if you break one it costs little to get a replacement. The bodies can sell for as little as £1 + postage.

What are the best camera lenses to use for portraits and concerts?

dslr camera lenses zoom on Dslr Camera With Zoom Lens Royalty Free Stock Image - Image: 6152686

xmead

I just want to hear your suggestions about what camera lenses to use use if you want to...

Take sharp portraits. A lense that captures face and body well. When you photograph outfits or fashion and makeup pictures.

Secondly, I wonder if there's any good lense for concert photography? I guess I should look for a tele-zoom. Some people say they make pictures more blurry. Is this true or just a myth?

Thank you.

Answer
Good portraits can be taken with any quality lens, however something in the 50mm-85mm range is good on a APS-C sized sensor (ie entry levels & prosumer DSLR's). I use either a 50mm f1.8, a 50mm f2.8 macro or an 85mm f1.8.

Concert work - well depends on how close you are & how much light there is. If you're some distance from the stage you'll need something with some reach - a good general purpose lens would be something like the 18-200mm. If its dark, you'll need a lens which is capable of wide apertures (ie f2.8). Unfortunately, to get a combination of long reach AND wide aperture costs a great deal!

How do I compare zoom between point&shoot and DSLR camera?

Robert Mag

I want to buy a camera with really good quality and very high zoom, I see a lot of point&shoot cameras that specify their zoom level, like some new models now indicate 20x zoom.
However, how would that compare to a dslr camera if I buy a telephoto lens or something,
how do I know if the dslr and lens have better than 20x zoom?

Answer
Most cameras now show the focal length in 35mm equivalents. If I take my old compact as an example then:-

It had a 10x zoom. The wide angle lens on this camera started at 25mm. That means simply the "zoom" was 25-250mm in equivalent terms as 25x10=250.

My DSLR lenses on the otherhand are:

18-55mm = 3x
50mm = 0x
70-300mm = 4.3x

Although the crop factor changes the values slightly in 35mm terms (18-55 becomes a 28-80 approx) the 3x "zoom" stays the same.

I think one of the biggest zooms on DSLR is the Tamron 15x 18-270mm

What is the policy on video cameras at Walt Disney World?

best camera lens for disney world image

Matt

I'm going to Disney world in a few weeks and I'm something of a video blogger. I need to know if I can bring my video camera into the park. is there some official place on-line that I can find this info?

Answer
Seems to depend - almost everywhere you can use them, without lights in dark attractions, but it seems to depend on the cast member on duty in some cases.

THIS IS QUOTED FROM: http://allears.net/btp/video.htm

"FILMING IN THE PARKS
The places that allow videotaping appear to be inconsistent. One 3D film allows video taping and two others do not. An attraction that once allowed taping no longer does. And a ride that I video taped in Disneyland doesn't allow taping at Disney World. And sometimes you are told at the start of a show that taping is not allowed and sometimes they forget.

Take pictures of signs before the attraction. It's always fun to know what attraction you are about to see and Disney has crafted some of the best artwork into these signs, so tape them as well to identify your attractions.

Magic Kingdom
You can tape anywhere except at Carousel of Progress (which allowed taping in the past) and the last part of Alien Encounter (no one stopped me from taping poor Skippy being burnt).
Epcot
Honey, Universe of Energy (taping was allowed years ago pre-Ellen & Bill Nye) and American Adventure (no announcement was made, but I asked prior to the show and was told no, the moral being don't ask).
Disney-MGM

Star Tours (I was previously allowed at Disneyland), Sounds Dangerous (you can video lobby exhibits), and no where at no time in the Animation Studio Tour. Yes, you can tape Muppets 3D. I had a lens from a broken pair of glasses all the way back from Magic Journeys and it worked fine on my camera. You won't be able to play back in 3D, but the picture will be viewable. Please do not be encouraged to purposely break a pair of glasses!

You cannot tape is the Backstage Pass in the Soundstage portions of the tour at Disney-MGM.

During the Super Soap Weekend, it is much better to tape your favorite star in the air conditioned comfort of Doug's theatre during their half hour talk sessions, then during the autograph signing unless you are just a glutton for punishment for a few seconds of good tape.

Animal Kingdom

When I was taping Tough to be a Bug they told me to stop. (Jackie, 7/99)"

Right lens for disney world vacation?

tvxq

I'm taking my 18-55mm lens and 75-300mm lens for our vacation to disney world. I just want to know your opinion if I will need the 75-300mm lens at Magic Kingdom? I'm positive that I will need it at Animal Kingdom. I don't want to take my bulky camera bag with me in the parks. How about Epcot and Hollywood Studios? And also is it fine to use tripod inside the parks? I'm traveling with my husband and I'm hoping to get few shots together. Thanks!

Answer
Stick with the 18-55 and forget about the tripod. You can get a little GorillaPod if you want to use a tripod, or just hand your camera to any of the 1000s of people who will be in the park. Generally, I look for people who have a dSLR of he same brand around their neck, because they are most likely going to be able to shoot the photo with minimal oversight. You would have a hard time swinging your camera around you by the strap without hitting at least 1 or 2 people with a similar camera anywhere in the park.

Hi, I just wanted to know, what are your suggestions, in the best dslr camera (any brand) considering the price, performance, and it's specialty. I'm currently using a Fujifilm Finepix S9500. It's my first dslr, and it's quite slow, and it has a fixed lens. I'm planning on looking for a better dslr. I use the camera for our church. Covering events like, sermons, parties, seminars, fellowships, concerts, and baptismal.
So, I need a camera that's quick, adjustable to present conditions, and can produce high-quality images even in harsh lighting conditions.
I'm looking for a camera that is good will a the events above. And I'm really praying for a better one.
Any suggestions?

Answer
"What is the best dslr camera for an all around photography?"

Whatever you can afford. New kits start around $600, while some decent used ones might be found for half that with luck.

"So, I need a camera that's quick, adjustable to present conditions, and can produce high-quality images even in harsh lighting conditions."

*No* camera does that. Screw anyone that tells you otherwise.

DSLRs require quite a bit of attention by the shooter. There is a point where shooting conditions get so bad that you have to improve them yourself or forsake the shotâeven the top-tier DSLRs can't do all of the work. Only experience can tell you when you need to add flash, have someone hold a bounce card by the door, bracket for exposure and spend some time in Photoshop, or try the shot tomorrow when lighting is better.

Church photography? Splurge on a good pan/tilt flash head and a decent wide aperture lens. Maybe even consider installing brighter indoor lighting. These will have much more effect on your images than the camera body.

What's the best Canon lens for wedding photography?

best canon lens for a wedding on What is the Best Canon Wedding Lens?
best canon lens for a wedding image

Megan with

I'm a photography student in high school and I was just asked to be the photographer at my friends brother's wedding. I'm really excited to do it but I want to get a new lens. I have a Canon t1i with only the standard lens. I'm looking for a good lens that would work good for the wedding that's not too pricey.

Answer
If you have to ask such a question, you are in no way qualified to be shooting someone's wedding. The most important thing you need is a contract signed by the bride and groom stating you will not be held responsible for your work and that they cannot sue you for what you do and do not produce.

What is the best type of lens for wedding/event photography with the Canon 5d or Canon 50d?

hcl118

I'm looking to take the plunge but wanted to get advice about the best recommended lens selection for either camera - any advice is welcome! Thanks!

Answer
Depends on your budget.

You will find that your body will depreciate and be worth less money as you use it, but the lenses won't depreciate so much.
Secondly, the lenses tend to keep their quality, they are good for several years, whereas the bodies tend to get better each line that comes out. Heck, look at the 20D compared to the 50D!
Finally, a good lens more than makes up for a cheaper body - you can almost get away with a 450D with a few L series lenses!

Better to get the 50D and better lenses than get the 5D and cheaper lenses. Having worked with crap stock lenses (and mid-range lenses) before and seen the photographs suffer from all sorts of distortion and softness I would recommend the better lenses.

One last tip, prime lenses are cheap but produce very sharp photographs with little distortion.

Ok, one more tip, you might want to take some photography classes first if you haven't taken any yet, getting an awesome camera does not automatically mean you will take great photographs.

im only 14 but ive been into photography my whole life. i can take pretty good pictures, and very good at editing. i currently have a nikon d40. i want to become a wedding photographer. can wedding photographers, or any type of photographer give me some tips?

to get started?
what type of cameras?
what age should i start wedding photography?
what kind of pictures to take?
anything, please and thanks.

Answer
Well, I do quite a few different types of photography, including weddings.

Just because you are 14 means only that age limitations apply. You have the youth and energy to craft your photographic trade for decades to come though! Having a Nikon D40 is a great thing. I shoot a D90 with a Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 and love it! The fact you can edit is a great plus, seeing that digital photography has a requisite for that kind of talent.

Now, on to your questions...

You've already have gotten started. You have a great camera, you're computer savvy and have drive. Now you need the channels to utilize those energies. How about the school paper? The local paper? Be a free-lance photographer for them! Learn what clients want and find out how you can supply it. How will you make yourself unique (differentiate) as compared to other photographers? Think about this.
As to how to further get started in wedding photography, I learned by taking lots of photographs and reading up on books in the library. I also asked other photographers (like you're doing here) on some tips. It takes time, and you have lots of that!

As for your camera, right now the D40 is fine. Learn the operations of the camera if you haven't already. Knowing your tools is of utmost importance to getting the most from them. In a few years, think about upgrading possibly. Always look to buy the best lenses you can afford. The lens will outlive the camera by decades! Read articles, look at product reviews and see what is the right kind of lenses and bodies for what you want to do. I still have my 6 year old D70 and lenses because my wife is getting into photography and she loves it.

You can do some work on wedding photography right now. Not for pay possibly, but doing some free-lance work and then showing the bride and groom your work afterwards would set you up for something in the near future. I'd say that the earliest you could get some sort of paying work is at 17 or 18. Don't ask me what you could charge... your work/portfolio quality will determine that in a few years.

What kind of pictures? What do you WANT to take pictures of? What really makes you want to snap that picture? That is the motivation you need to focus on! That is what helps differentiate your work from everyone else! I do a lot of landscape, macro, flowers/plants and specialty photography personally.

The best thing to do is:

1) Learn your camera and lenses. What/where are they good at performing? How many lenses do you really need to just start? If you only have one lens then fine. Learn its strengths and weaknesses. Know the camera operations by memory so that when conditions change, you can change the settings accordingly.
Do you have a good prime lens (50mm f/1.8), a good low end zoom (18-70/105mm), a good high focal length zoom (70-300mm)? Maybe, like me, you have a good "walk about" lens (18-270mm). Even if you just have the 18-105mm Nikon lens the D40 came with, it's a very good lens! You can do a lot of fine work with that lens.

2) Read up on the types of photography you'd like to do. Take notes. How about some classes in middle or high school? Go to the library and check out some books so you can refer back to them. That is a no-cost option! Learn the basics of exposure and composition and how to get different effects from different settings of the camera. Don't rely on your software to make a semi-good picture better. Learn to take a great picture right off the bat so you don't have to do any rework on the computer.

3) Learn from your mistakes. Why did the picture come out bad, over or under exposed? How can you work to not do that again? Why is is that certain pictures came out fantastic? What did you do correctly so you can repeat that? Since you have a digital camera, you can usually take several shots of the same subject and see how different settings make the picture change to you liking.

4) Have fun doing whatever you do. I have seen so many people get into photography and get lost in the details that they forget to have FUN!

Good luck!

What is the best camera lens when shooting a wedding that will be in a church and at the reception?

Alana W

I have been asked to take the photographs at my friends wedding. Which lenses are usually used? I have a canon digital rebel xt. I already have an 18-55 lens and a telephoto lens. The wedding will be at a church, and the reception will be at a hotel hall. Which ones will be suitable for shooting the wedding and reception?

Answer
If you can get your hands on one, buy, borrow or rent a Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 ($1050 retail). On a budget, get a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 ($450). These lenses provide much better image quality than the 18-55 kit lens, they are considerably faster than the 18-55 kit lens, and they are made to be used at f/2.8 (unlike the kit lens, which needs to be stopped down to around f/8 for best image quality). You'll use this zoom range for 80+ percent of you shots.

If you can't afford these, consider a Canon 50mm f/1.8 for the church ceremony. Used copies cost peanuts and they're under $100 retail. This is NOT the right lens for the job, but it WILL let you do available light photography.

Use your current tele lens for some candids. Or if money is no object, upgrade to a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8.

If you don't already have an external flash, strongly consider one and learn how to use it for fill-flash. The flash of choice is the Canon 580EX ($380). You probably won't be allowed to use it inside the church, but it will be very useful for the formals and at the reception.

Also stock up on memory cards and get an extra battery. Carry spare batteries for your flash as well.

Answer
Of course it all depends on your budget, but not only that. It also depends on your needs... do you need different lenses for shots from different distances? Then you'll need a dslr (digital single-lens reflex) camera, like the Canon EOS Rebel T3i 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera and DIGIC 4 Imaging with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens, that can interchange lenses, but be careful... not all lenses are created equal! You can easily spend WAY more than the camera for just lenses.

If your needs are small and portable, yet powerful for gathering quick photos, then you should consider the Nikon COOLPIX S9200 16 MP CMOS Digital Camera with 18x Zoom NIKKOR ED Glass Lens and Full HD 1080p Video.

You could also consider getting a kit like the Canon EOS Rebel T3 12.2 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II Zoom Lens & EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Telephoto Zoom Lens + 10pc Bundle 16GB Deluxe Accessory Kit, which comes with just about everything you'll need to get started.

Bottom line, shop around and get the best deal. Follow your gut instincts and you will rarely go wrong!

Why do camcorders have excellent optical zoom (40ish) but digital cameras do not (20ish)?

dslr camera lens mug on Nikon Camera Lens Mug
dslr camera lens mug image

Adrian

Just wondering why Camcorders can zoom in farther than digital cameras...

Answer
Reason is because camcorders' sensor is far smaller than digital camera. The smaller the sensor the easier it is to design superzoom lens.

Compact caemra with 20ish-x zoom has sensor size of 1/2.33", while those higher end compact cameras with 5x zoom has 1/1.7".

Camcorder normally have 1/3" sensor to even 1/6" sensor. Very small.

Same goes to DSLR lens, with a much much larger sensor, a 3x zoom lens would be as big as a beer mug.

So it's all about the size.

Shops in Tucson AZ? Safe to buy lens online?

Im going to buy a lens for the first time, for my dslr. Its going to be $700 and I was thinking it might not be safe. I have bought things from Amazon but only inexpensive things. Once a coffee mug got lost during the delivery and Amazon agreed to replace it, even though its reports said it had been delivered.

Anyways, anywhere I can buy camera lenses in Tucson? I dont live there, but its the closes city. If I dont find shops I might order it from Best Buy but I would like to find a camera only store that has lots of lenses available for pick up...

Answer
Most people make their camera equipment purchases from either B&H Photo or Adorama. I have been doing business with them since I was 18 now am age 71. No problems. With Amazon although I have had absolutely no problems you are in effect dealing with two companies instead of one.

So, Im learning photography and I have been using a Minolta Film SLR for a while and I want to go to digital. I have a budget of $350 and I want to know what kind of good quality camera I can get. I am currently planning to buy a Panasonic Lumix G5 with the 14-42mm lens, then buying a minolta AF lens( Or canon lens, the old ones, if my grandpa will give them to me) to a Micro 4/3 adapter for around $350. If there is a better route let me know.

Thanks for any Help.

Answer
If you have Minolta AF lenses then they will fit and work perfectly on the Sony Alpha range of DSLRs. (Sony bought the Minolta camera division).
A58 is the entry level DSLR (DSLT really as it has fixed mirror and very high resolution OLED viewfinder. At semi-pro/enthusiast level is the Sony A77.. this has 2 control dials and allows individual back/front focus adujustments on lenses.

I cannot recommend fitting old lenses via adapters to smaller-sensor compact system cameras. If size of camera body is the problem then you may still be able to find a Sony A37.

What lenses fit on a Canon Rebel XSI camera?

Lindsey K

I am looking for a Canon lens that fits on my rebel XSI. I take portrait pics and nature and also random shots. What kind of lenses fit on that type of camera? Also a lens made for those type of photos?

Answer
Great thing about Canon EOS camera are that you have great choice of lenses unlike Nikon and other brands.

I also have XSi and I have Canon and Tamron lens and they are all compatible.

Any Canon EF or EF-S lens will fit you XSi. If you have EF lens from your old Canon film camer that will fit your XSi or any EOS DSLR.

If you prefer to buy a cheaper Tamron or Sigma, make sure that they are FE or EF-S mount.

Note that EF lens are forward compatible but EF-S are not backward compatible.

I'm looking for a lens that would be good for low light along with a little wide-angle/zoom capability.
Something below $1000 would be fantastic.

Answer
Hey,

For low light and prime, I'd get Canon EF 50mm f/1.4. I also recommend Canon EF-S 17-55, 24-70 (bit more), 10-22.

But to help you more, here's a site with the best tutorial for buying a lens

What is a good starter lens for the Canon 60D for videography purposes?

bob crane

I just bought the Canon 60D mostly for videography purposes. I am looking to purchase a lens with great wide angle and zoom capabilities. I understand I will have to eventually buy more than one, but I'm looking for one that is well rounded in both departments.

Any and all suggestions are appreciated!

Answer
EVERY person filming or taking pictures NEEDS a good PRIME lens such as a 50mm. A 50mm lens can be found for as little as $120 for a f/1.8, I personally would go for a f/1.4 which is about $200 more, there is really only two differences in the 1.8 and the 1.4; build quality and the F stop which is the aperture. I don't know if you know anything about aperture but the lower the F number the lower light you can shoot in (without cranking up ISO). I know you said you want a zoom lens, but at $120 for a 50mm I thought it would be a great addition to your lens collection allowing you to shoot in low light situations. Now a REALLY GOOD lens that is wide angle and zooms (a little bit) is the 17-40mm this is an L lens which stands for Luxury (and are denoted by the red ring on the barrel). The barrel of Canon L lenses are generally made from metal and the optics are superb. This lens isn't too expensive but it will run you a good $800 (these lenses are built like tanks, most are water-resistant, but I'd advise checking out your choice of L lens to see if you can have it out in a light rain). My advice to you is to search the website of your local camera store and look at the selection of lenses, this way you know your store either has the lens in stock, or you know they can get it in stock. Also, going to your local camera store and talking with someone who works there could be very beneficial, not only will they tell you a good lens for your needs, but you could learn some things on how to take AMAZING pictures and video.

I have about 1,200+ dollars. I love to travel and love to photograph the people and the places I visit. I haven't done any courses but I will in a few weeks. I want to buy a nikon or canon SLR camera plus a lens. I understand that in most cases, the lens is more important than the body. My parents said they would let me use their sigma 28-200 canon lens if I want. Im not sure if this is a decent lens. I don't know what to do. Maybe I should keep saving? I have also been looking at the canon 60d. Does anyone know what I should do?

Answer
Hi
If you want to go with canon you could get the new 70d which just came out or go with you 60d idea, very good camera. I've got 600d and 60d is ment to be the big brother to it. Also the 60d is weather sealed, good for travelling so if you have 1200d to spend go for that then spend the rest on glass
Sigma is not going to be as good as the canon version of the lens so maybe get like a 18-250 mm lens so you get the range you want for traveling as you may see any thing from near to far when traveling
Go for used 60d off eBay body only for about 650 dollars then you can invest in some good quality L lenses

Or get 70d and get kit lens or get a cheaper lens to go with that

Hope that helps

where can i get a waterhousing for my canon60d?

kiyana t

I'v been wanting to get a water housing for my canon 60d but im scared to buy one online im not sure if its gonna come with everything? I just need help finding a trusting place to get one but not those bags. like an actual case that are from $800-1,500 and if i got one what type of lense do i need?

Answer
Ikelite is the main manufacturer - housings for the 60d are about $1500, but you'll also need a lens port and dome for each lens you want to use.

If you have a kit lens with the body, stick with that to start - kit lenses are usually a reasonable zoom range, and while the aperture isn't very wide on most, the high ISO on a 60d is more than good enough will compensate for that.

I take a lot of portraits, live band performances, and detailed pictures of the jewelry I make. I also want a camera that will take really clear pictures handheld without the flash. Looking to spend under $2,200.00. Which of these would you recommend or do you have a different recommendation.

Answer
don't think the maker matters... any of the dSLR's (not just the two you mention) will do the job. taking portraits shouldn't be an issue for any camera and lens.

bear in mind you may need a macro lens to take the close ups, lighting can be tricky for close ups.

the one I think may be the problem is going to be the live band performances.. you may need exceptional low light capability, image stabilisation and some good post processing software.

so if I were you Id want to break down the budget to include
the camera body
a macro lens
a standard/mid range lens
possibly a telephoto lens
you may be able to get a macro lens which doubles up as a standard lens
some post processing software such as photoshop.

What is a good camera used for detailed picture taking?

Peace

I am a small business owner and need to take a picture of some of my products to upload to my website (some of these are extremely detailed jewelry pieces). The camera that I am currently borrowing does not take the picture as well as how the product, itself, looks. It makes the image blurry and not the right color. I have tried to change the settings to it and the image still comes out either looking light, faded and washed out or too dark and orange hued. Taking videos of the product was much better but it's still not how I want. What camera would you recommend? I also want a camera for other uses, like taking pictures of models or other things put up for display so if I can get one for both purposes, that would be awesome.

Answer
You can spend a ton of money on some really high end equipment, or you can spend some money and get equipment that is good enough. I vote for the good enough route.

Get a decent camera with a sharp lens. You can either buy a used dSLR (Canon or Nikon, it makes no difference) or a good P&S. Here is a good article on moderate P&S cameras:
http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/canon-s100/

Here is one on cheaper options:

Then get a little light tent, lights and tripod kit:

The Canon 30D comes with a 28 90mm lens and is 3 years old. What should I specifically look for to make sure I'm not getting ripped off?

Answer
"I am going to look at a used Canon 30D, what should I be weary of?"

Big dogs. They can bite.

What is a good Wide-Angle lens to buy for the Canon 30D that's not outrageously expensive?

Mr. Curiou

I want a good quality lens. How much is it going to cost me though? And how do I tell a "good lens" from a mediocre one? Any model suggestions? (for Canon digital 30D)

Answer
when thinking about lens you should not think in terms of cheep. instead you need to think that a lens is like your eyeball and you want the best viewing instrument that you can have optically. while there are some good optic quaility lens out there. there is so much more optical quality to be had.

so my advice, decide what you want to shoot; what lens are there that are best suited for shooting that type of photography and then save up. dont buy a lens just to have it until you can replace it for a better quality lens. instead think that camera bodies come and go with technology (that 30d will be obsolete in 4 yrs), but your lens will be as sharp and chrisp as there were the day you bought them. ask the professional photographers that bought the D30 and then the D60 then the 10D,20D,5D, 1D,1Ds,1D mark II, IDs mark II. they used the same lens (probably Canon L glass) on all those camera's. just like you will probably use whatever lens you choose on the next body and the next body long after the 30D

you just spent $1,500 on a camera dont put a cheep "eyeball" on the front and handicap your camera. if you didnt want to spend a lot of money then why did you spend $1,500 on a body? and if $1,500 is not a lot of money, then there are a lot of Canon L glass that you can buy in the $1,500 range.

and there is no such thing as a deal in ebay for photographic equipment. if you think you are getting a deal you are more than likely getting ripped off one way or another. just about every piece of photography equipment on ebay is selling for 90% or better the list price. just buy it new in the box from a reputable store with the warranty and everything intact.

as to what lens is what. see both of those sites below for reviews and forums of lens for your camera

PS: FYI i have a canon 20d with assortment of lens and have learned the lens swap game doesnt pay off.

Wondering if I should buy a lens before I go to china or when I am there?

Bergg

I am going to china this summer and I want to know If I should buy a lens before I go or when I am there? I am wondering if there is a price difference when I am there than here in the us. I know that it is 20% less there. I am looking to buy a canon lens. I am going to shanghai, Beijing, and more.

Answer
It would be better to buy one before you go because $839.99 = 5417.93 china money

and you also wont get a warranty in china. the price in china would probably be like 10 - 20 dollars cheaper but not worth it.
