What is a good camera that takes great quality action shots?

best canon lens action shots on ... Top Tripod, USB 2.0 SD Card Reader, Professional Lens Cleaning Kit
best canon lens action shots image

Doug H

My old camera is a little outdated and when I take action shots the pictures come out blurry. I want a new camera with great technology that will give me great action shots.

Answer
Any DSLR with a longer lens will do what you want, but you will also need certain skills to get great action shots. Like panning with the action, shooting at the peak of action, knowing the sport you are attempting to shoot and depending more on your skills than the technology of the camera.

Many of the people here are using Canon and Nikon entry level DSLR's with the 70-300 mm lens and are being quite successful with their action and sports shots.

What to do when taking an action shot in low lighting with canon ae-1?

Lindsay Ga

I'm getting the basics down for the canon ae-1 i've got. I would just like to know some specifics on how to get a good action shot of something when the lighting is low, without it coming out all blurry. I'm just not sure if theres certain things i need to know about what to do with shutter speed etc. anything helps. thanks!

Answer
Use fast film - ISO800 at least
Use wide aperture lens - F/1.8 if you can
Put the camera on a tripod.
Increase the lighting level any way you can - spotlights? or flash (not much use for distant action though!)

5 guidelines in buying a digital cameras, cannon and sony brand only ,nikon is optional.?

grammo

what are the 5 basics steps in buying a digital cameras,i prefer ,cannon and sony brand only ,nikon is optional.

Answer
Are you talking about P&S cameras? If so remember that Sony P&S cameras use proprietary memory cards. Canon and Nikon use the same SD / SDHC cards.

In the choice of buying a DSLR is exactly the same as when buying a 35 mm camera system decades ago.

* Does the system have all the features you will need as an advanced amateur or pro?
* What limitations are there when it comes to the availability of bodies and lenses?
* Which camera system is mature enough to support your photographic career now and in the foreseeable future?
* Which DSLR system offers the best availability of specialized equipment rental?
* Can you use the lenses you have now with future professional level cameras made by the camera company I am considering?

From Ken Rockwell's website.
"Nikon often includes secret features in cameras and in lenses to make them compatible with the next five years or so of secretly planned technology.

For instance, the 1988 F4 is completely compatible with AF-I and AF-S lenses which didn't appear until 1992 and 1998.

Nikon AI lenses in 1977 already had secret lugs on the back which couple lens information to cameras for Matrix metering, not introduced until the FA of 1983.

Zoom AF lenses, ever since they were introduced in 1986, have always had focal length encoders which insert data into today's digital cameras' EXIF data.

AF lenses of today ... still have mechanical lugs for backwards compatibility with the matrix meter of the 1983 FA, and manual focus lenses still have prongs for coupling to the 1959 F."

When I ask those questions as a pro, the order is thus:

1. Nikon ... it has the most lenses, new and used since 1959 that can be used within the system ... Perhaps the most important, all the DX lenses can be used on the FX (full frame) digital cameras and if you don't mind vignetting the 35 mm cameras can use them as well.
2. Canon ... all lenses made since 1988 can be used by current Canon cameras except EF-S lenses ... they cannot be used on Canon 35 mm or full frame digital cameras.
3. Sony ... New kid on the block with no background in professional still cameras. The Sony system can use selected Minolta AF lenses made since the late 1980's

How do I take pictures of a hockey game with my Canon Rebel digital without them coming out blurry?

colemandre

I used the "sport mode" as well as a tripod and they are still blurry.

Answer
use the shutter priorety mode ((i think it's -TV- in canon rebel)) set the speed to 1/60...or 1/125....1/250.. whatever suits u .....set the W/B for indoor shooting.....use the tripod ....shoot in burst mode......
using the shutter speed higher than ((1/60..1/125..1/250)) may require increasing the ISO((depends on the lighting condition))...i think it's better if u had mention ur lens type, it's focal length and aperture ....good luck.

What's the best canon lens for pleasure photography and vacations?

best canon lens 5d mark ii on Canon DSLR EOS 5D Mark II Kit Price in India
best canon lens 5d mark ii image

Buttercup

Hey guys. I'm a 15 year old girl and for the past 2 years I've been saving up for a canon 5d mark ii and I'm almost there and I was wondering, which lens is the best for personal photography and vacations etc? Me and my dad travel a lot to big cities and stuff. Two of the things I'm looking forward to is going to NYC for New Year 2014 and we're also going to Sochi for the 2014 Olympic games. So I definitely want a lens for that.

I also like to take pics of my animals, and at the beach and of my friends at school. Any suggestions?

Answer
By purchasing a full frame camera, you have limited yourself to buying Canon EF lenses. The less expensive EF-S lenses cannot be used on your 5D, Mark II without damaging the cameras mirror.

Here is a link to all the Canon lenses.

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/ef_lens_lineup

As you can see, you still have a lot of lenses to choose, but you may need more than just one lens for covering the subjects you like to shoot.

Here is a link that will show you what different focal length lenses "see"

http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/lens/simulator/index.htm

When I am in Manhattan, I use a 14-24 mm lens to shoot the city.
When I am shooting field sports, I use a 70-300 mm when shooting in bright sun or a 300 mm f/2.8 when shooting indoors or at night
The lens I use for shooting my friends and events is the 24-70 mm f/2.8 lens

As you can see, the fine 5D, Mark II is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to building a camera system

What is the best fisheye lens for my Canon 1D Mark II?

Parker S

What fisheye lens would do the best job with my Canon 1D Mark II? I am also looking to buy the Canon 5D Mark II so what fisheye lens would be the best? Thanks!
Is this the best of the best? Money aside what will give me the best fisheye results? Ive looked at that lens and just dont know if it give the full fisheye effect?

Answer
You should probably look at the Canon 15mm f/2.8. Interestingly, you will be able to check lens tests and reviews at http://ylovephoto.com/en/2008/11/26/web-sites-for-lens-tests/

What filters are worth buying for a dslr camera BESIDES a uv filter. is a polarizing filter or a ND grad filter more important? can i have opinions

Answer
Number one is a circular polarizing filter. Number two might be a ND filter, but the polarizer will cut from one to one and a half stops of exposure, so that might do you for a while.

Many people recommend a UV or Skylight filter for dust protection. I am not a fan of this. Why alter the colors if you don't want to? I DO use a PLAIN GLASS (costing more than UV or Skylight) filter when I am working in a dirty environment, but otherwise, I have nothing on the front of my lens. They are coated enough to protect from wind or whatever filters are supposed to protect the lens from.

I'm taking my 18-55mm lens and 75-300mm lens for our vacation to disney world. I just want to know your opinion if I will need the 75-300mm lens at Magic Kingdom? I'm positive that I will need it at Animal Kingdom. I don't want to take my bulky camera bag with me in the parks. How about Epcot and Hollywood Studios? And also is it fine to use tripod inside the parks? I'm traveling with my husband and I'm hoping to get few shots together. Thanks!

Answer
Stick with the 18-55 and forget about the tripod. You can get a little GorillaPod if you want to use a tripod, or just hand your camera to any of the 1000s of people who will be in the park. Generally, I look for people who have a dSLR of he same brand around their neck, because they are most likely going to be able to shoot the photo with minimal oversight. You would have a hard time swinging your camera around you by the strap without hitting at least 1 or 2 people with a similar camera anywhere in the park.

What digital camera is good for taking night time pictures and fireworks?

TWil

I have 2 cameras and neither takes very good night time pics or pics of fireworks. I will be going to Disney World soon and I want to get some nice night time pics. Any help would be great. What camer do you use when you go to Disney World?

Answer
I think your ideal camera setup would be a digital SLR with high ISO capabilities (and low noise at those high ISO settings) and a lens with image stabilization OR a tripod-mounted setup.

Reasons:
- Digital: because you will be able to review your work and reshoot as necessary. As per the other commentor's recommendation, a digital Canon Rebel should be fine.
- High ISO (~800) will allow you to use faster shutter speeds which will steady your show; however, if you are going for longer shutter speeds for that 'movement' effect, higher ISO and short shutter speeds are not so much a factor.
- Low noise is important (the digital equivalent of 'grain')...and you will see more noise as you use a higher ISO with a darker subject. The nice thing is that Photoshop has a noise remover, so even if you shoot at 1600 with a lot of noise, it can be taken out later.
- Image stabilization on the lens (or on the body if you have a point-and-shoot) is helpful, esp if you are using a telephoto range; otherwise, your firework streams will streak left and right, or up and down.
- A less expensive alternative to the image stabilizer is the tripod...takes more time to setup however. ALSO, you should not use a tripod AND an image stabilized lens at the same time (if mounting an image stabilized lens on a tripod, turn off the image stabilization.)

Other tips, your autofocus may not know what it is focusing on when dealing with fireworks...if this is the case, set your camera to manual focusing and focus at just under or at infinity.

RR

I'm looking for a lens that can capture a long distance but isn't too big or heavy.

Thanks.

Answer
I'm not a Canon user, so I can't name specific lenses, but it sounds like you could use a visual aid to help you know what lens reaches how far.

Here is a mini-tutorial I made myself to compare focal lengths. This is NOT a lens test or a camera test! It is merely intended to show the difference between various focal lengths. The lens was the Nikon 18-200 VR lens, which is (by definition) an 11X lens, but that 11X does not tell you what the final image will look like. I added one more frame taken with a 300 mm lens. The camera was a Nikon D200 so there is a 1.5X "crop factor," "lens factor," or "focal length multiplier." Your XTi will have a crop factor of 1.6X, so the tutorial will be valid for you as well, since that's pretty close to the same thing. There is further explanation on the image itself. It would help if you click on "All Sizes" above the image.

This was done with two different lenses: the Nikon 17-55 and 70-300:

What does the space station camera look like?

jarcher8

Just viewed some pictures of Earth shot from the space station in orbit. Kind of doubt they are using standard cameras to take such beautifully detailed long distance beautiful picture's, and was just wondering what a "space camera" looks like.
Thanks for any and all replies!

Answer
The use standard cameras, half of them use film, and half are digital. But these are full professional grade, around $8,000 (and up) cameras, with the filters and lens for taking the pictures. They are checked, calibrated, adjusted and cleaned very carefully before being taken up. The modifications, if any, for space use are pretty minimal -- painted black in order to minimize reflections, larger shutter button for use with gloves, data imprinting on each frame (time, picture number, camera settings).

There are at least 9 high quality cameras used, including:
Nikon D2Xs
Nikon D3X
Kodak DCS460
Kodak DCS760
Maurer (w/ Xenotar 80mm f/2.8 lens)
... and a few others.

How do I attach the strap to the Canon Rebel XSI when the "original" strapping comes undone?

have received the Canon Rebel XSI, and I was starting to attach the strap, when I realized I had no clue what I was doing. So, the original binding of the packaged strap is undone, and it is not on the camera. I have looked in the manual, but it was of no help because they only give directions of how to attach the strap with the "original" binding. How do I attach it while this has happened? Thank you.

Answer
Lay the strap flat, with the Canon logo downwards. Place the camera infront of it with the lens facing away from you. Pick the strap up and turn it over to check the writing is the right way round (it should be the right way up as you look at it from this angle). Put the strap back down.

Take the left hand end of the strap, without twisting it, feed it upwards through the hole for it on the left of the camera. Feed it back through the two fittings, following the line it already takes. This just doubles up the strap through each of the fittings, holding it in place.

There is no need to put a twist into the strap at any point.

Repeat the process on the right hand side. Up and through, loop round, through the two fittings. Once its done check everything is tight before trusting the strap with your new camera.

I have a question about how to clean Canon XSi?

gamefreak9

I just recently purchased a Canon Rebel XSi and the LCD screen is somewhat dirty.
How would I go about cleaning the lcd screen itself? I've heard that I should use microfiber cloths that come with eye glasses, but I want your opinion on this.

Thanks in advance.

Answer
The LCD screen isn't all that important, considering that it doesn't affect your images at all, and all you use it for is image review or checking info.
Hence, I wouldn't worry too much about it. However, I would apply the same rules as I apply to my lenses - no fluids ever, as they may ruin the coating on the lens.

Using a microfiber cloth makes the most sense to me, too. It is all I use, and they do do a great job.

I want a new life hobby and I'm really interested in photography. The problem is I have no idea how to start. I want a camera like those professional photographers who carry them everywhere strapped to there chest looking for the perfect pic lol!! I'm also in high school so my budget is tight. I heard Nikon cameras were good but I have no idea so could you give me some great suggestions for cameras. Especially ones that i could take great nature photos with and sunrises and roof buildings. Also any tips on photo taking and well any beginner advice would be very appreciated! No kiddy cameras i want it to look professional but fun so i can make a portfolio. Thanks! :)

Answer
There is a big difference between having a professional looking camera and making competent photos with said camera. You didn't mention a budget. If you want really professional stuff, be prepared to spend anywhere from $5000 up to the tens of thousands for just the body.

The reality is that any entry level dSLR with its kit lens will do just fine for a beginner. It will be a great start to learning the basics and will serve for quite a long time. Indeed, the majority of photographers will never outgrow their first dSLR. Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sony and Olympus all make fine entry level cameras starting at about $500. Here is a list of possibilities from dpreview:

http://www.dpreview.com/articles/9566705626/buying-a-digital-slr

After you get your camera, plan to spend lots of time in the user's manual. Also pick up a book on basic photography and composition. Maybe Digital Photography For Dummies as well. (Not that you're a dummy at all, but it is a good simple book that explains things from the start, assuming you know very little about the entire process.)

Then do a Google for photography tips or lessons, and you will find lots of great sites for learning. I am leaving you a link to some good/excellent photography so you will know how good work looks.

http://photo.net/gallery/photocritique/filter

There are lots of forums and tutorials on Photo.net as well as work from every genre all over the world.

Don't plan on having much portfolio worthy material for some time. It takes applied effort both in learning and practice before you will put out consistently decent work. Everyone starts at the beginning and builds from there. Have fun and happy shooting!

A question for Photo shop users, I am new to photoshop and digital photography I downloaded a few lynda

thomashone

.Com videos on photoshop and I am amazed at what the program can do. However some of the terms they use I don't really understand for example hue and saturation to me seems to be the same thing, I am probably wrong. Camera raw is another term I don't really get, I checked the photoshop help and the definations they give is confusing to me, I guess because I am new. I checked on line and the one site defines the terms one way another site another way. Is there a site or resource where I find the definitions of the most commonly used terms in I guess you would call it photography or digital artistry? What I am asking is where can I find the definitions of these terms so I can fully understand what the instructors and other tutorials are trying to explain? Thanks

Answer
Hue is essentially color or color variation. Saturation you can think of as the richness of a color or the color density. You will see people refer to "highly saturated colors" meaning the colors are bright and strong and rich, sometimes almost unreal looking. Think of a newly opened red rose in bright noontime sunlight on a summer day. The red is very rich, very intense. That same red rose in the afternoon with shadows over it is still the same red, but not nearly as rich looking, so not nearly as saturated. In fact, you will run into the term "desaturate": it means to pull color from an image. A completely desaturated image has no color, just shades of gray.

Many good quality digital SLR cameras (DSLR, SLR meaning Single Lens Reflex) can shoot in RAW. Unfortunately each camera company has a different RAW standard, which can make things confusing, and Adobe's RAW in Photoshop is another standard. Luckily what Adobe has been doing is making its RAW interpreter, if you will, able to understand the RAW settings of many different camera companies. RAW is the raw information that the sensor on the camera records, with no compression. JPEG or .jpg files, the most common format and what all cameras can pretty much shoot in (from your very low end cell phone camera on up) are compressed files and automatically lose some information. This depends on the camera too. RAW files are everything, every bit of data that the camera's sensor or sensors can pick up and record, it's why they are HUGE files. You might see information that states your camera can shoot 10 RAW files on a 1 GB memory card, but can record 50 high quality large .jpg files.

Photoshop includes the ability to open edit with RAW; you can also then convert after editing to .jpg if you wish, and of course for printing, publishing, sending images via e-mail or uploading to a website, generally you will need to save your images as .jpgs. Do be aware that you don't want to EDIT in the .jpg format. If you are editing an image in Photoshop, save the image as a Photoshop or .psd file format (.psd is the "native" Photoshop file type). The main reason, aside from being able to use all the tools, filters, etc in Photoshop is that the .jpg format is what is called "lossy." Every time you open, edit, and resave a .jpg file, the compression algorithm it uses throws away data. So over time you will find a .jpg will lose quality. There's nothing you can do about that: it's built into the .jpg file type and it does this automatically.

You may want to invest in a couple of books. I think you probably don't need the Photoshop for Dummies book (I am assuming you are using Photoshop CS3?), but you might want to look at the Photoshop CS3 Visual Quickstart Guide and the Photoshop CS3 Bible.

Hope that helps you!

What should i look for when shopping for a DSLR camera?

dslr camera lens filters image

zerodfgh

I am looking to replace my point and shoot camera with a DSLR camera. Does anyone have any suggestions to a camera for a beginner? What specs should i look for?

Answer
Any of the entry level DSLRs would keep you happy for a few years. I'd pick either Canon or Nikon. I have a LOT of contact with other photographers and time and time again it seems that either one of those are most likely to make their owners happy.

The most important part is to buy only the best lenses - camera bodies get upgraded, lenses stay with us.
You WILL regret buying cheap lenses.
Don't rush into buying lenses. Start with a kit lens, get to know your camera, that lens, and all photographic principles.
Through time and through use, you will eventually KNOW what other lenses you'll need/want.
The more time you'll take, the less likely you are to regret your choices.

If you know anyone close to you with a camera, consider borrowing lenses and "picking their brain" about their camera and whatever else they know.

Go to a store and hold a few cameras, see how they feel to YOU.

Do lots of research before you buy, and start learning about photography, too.

Keep in mind that buying a DSLR isn't cheap, even if you find a good deal for body and kit lens.

You'll also want and/or need a few other things such as tripod, filters, a bag, sensor cleaning gear, a second battery, memory cards, perhaps a remote shutter release etc.

That's just the small stuff - I can guarantee you that you'll also want more and more lenses.
You'll also want a decent flash some day.

See how that list just goes on and on?
Owning a DSLR isn't cheap - at least not until you have built up a nice stash of gear.

Just some food for thought........

Can you get different lens for fujifilm finepix S2500hd?

Apersonwit

I bought a fujifilm finepix S2500hd DSLR camera. It comes with a lens but i am wondering whether you can buy different lens for it like a macro lens or something.
Have looked on amazon and Ebay but can't find any.
Thanks:)
Thanks guys i didn't know:)

Answer
The fujifilm finepix S2500hd is not a DSLR but what is called a "bridge camera". It has a small sensor like a point and shoot, but with the look and feel of a DSLR. The lens is not changeable. You can purchase filter type adapters to place in front of your lens to add to the wide angle, telephoto or macro abilities of that lens. Your camera should feature a nice, built in macro feature already.

I really wanna get good and be known for like having my camera and talking good photos but I always feel kinda weird with it and taking pictures. Is it weird to be carrying it around everywhere and not having good photos? Also any tips on taking pictures would be awesome!

Answer
I carry a Nikon D80 with me all ( well, most ) of the time. I've missed many photo ops by not having it with me.
Just the other day I was walking down a local pathway when I came across a squirrel . He was standing straight up and froze when he saw me. I stopped and didn't move. He didn't move for 10 or 15 seconds, enough time for me to get a couple shots off.
No, it's not weird...get out there and shoot !

Will the lens of an old nikon camera work on one of the new digital cameras?

Larry H

I have a nikon 8008s camera with three lens for it. If I buy a new nikon digital camera will these lens work on the new camera?

Answer
Lenses for an F801/8008 would all be Ai or AF/AF-D. They would almost certainly NOT be AF-I/AF-S (the F801/8008 can't operate the autofocus motor in AF-I/AF-S lenses). They would mount on any Nikon digital body.

The two gotchas would be:

1. Ai lenses (except for the fairly uncommon Ai-P lenses which are actually AF-D lenses without autofocus) would get no metering on anything except the D1/2/3 or D200/300/700.

2. AF/AF-D lenses would not autofocus on a D40/D40x/D60

Another important thing to note: Except on a D3/D700 all your film lenses will behave like longer lenses on digital bodies, due to the 1.5x crop factor of the smaller sensor.

I want to take pictures that you need to manipulate the camera's focus for the effect to make the picture better. I want to know if there is a method or an app that can do this.

Answer
If you were using a real camera, the answer would be to use the manual focusing ring on the lens and adjust the lens aperture to control the depth of filed.

Since your camera has none of these features, you are going to have to find an app that will artificially do this for you

Why is my iphone 4 taking pictures better than a Panasonic lumix?

I have a Panasonic lumix dmc-lz8 with a 8 megapixels camera that takes pictures at 2048X1536 resolution and an iphone 4 with 5 megapixels camera that takes pictures at 2592X1936. Why a 5 megapixels camera is better than an 8 one?

Answer
The Panasonic is not set to its highest resolution setting. It's highest setting is 3264 X 2448. Somehow your camera got set to the 3MP setting.

Page 68 of the manual explains what I'm talking about - and how to set it back to its highest quality setting: http://service.us.panasonic.com/OPERMANPDF/DMCLZ8.PDF

More megapixels doesn't mean a better picture. The larger image sensor and better lens in the Panasonic mean that its pictures would have less noise/grain and better low light performance - so even if it had less resolution, because it produces a better quality photo you could still make a larger print. I've seen iPhone photos. Unless you're shooting in bright daylight, they look terrible and you would have a hard time even getting a nice 4X6 print.

What kind of Canon camera lens should I buy?

best canon lens for landscape on Canon Product Reviews and Ratings - 35mm & Digital SLR Lenses - Canon ...
best canon lens for landscape image

Philip

I have been researching camera lenses but I do not know which one to buy. I have a Canon T2I, but I want a lens that is good for low-lighting, action shots, landscapes, and zooming. My budget is $500. Please let me know what I should buy and why. Thanks!

Answer
With your budget of $500.00 your best choice is the Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM which is perfect for low-light use. About $400.00 depending on where you shop. Since its a prime lens (no zoom) you'll have to learn to "zoom" like we did before there were zoom lenses - walk closer to get less of a scene, walk backwards to get more of a scene.

The 18mm end of your 18-55mm zoom is fine for landscapes.

For action/sports you'll need to save more and buy the EF 70-200mm f4L IS USM zoom which is about $1,350.00 depending on where you shop.

Can someone recommend a good lens for landscape photography?

:)

I recently bought a Canon 7D (love it) and have been using a 50mm 1.4, and I need a good lens for landscape (oceans, mountains, cities, etc)

My budget is no more than $700, please help

Answer
The Canon 10-22 is a great wide lens, as others have suggested.

I would also suggest a long lens like the Canon 200mm f/2.8 $750. You can produce some very interesting landscape images using long lenses. You can either compress a scene like this:

http://www.altitudestock.com/image/I0000asdE7BBG3_
http://www.altitudestock.com/image/I0000BWRhwArPUDY

Or you can use a long lens to take several images to stitch into a pano like this:

All of those images were made using a 200mm lens.

what is the best dslr camera and lens for an amateur photographer?

dslr camera lens nikon on Nikon D7000 DSLR Camera Kit with Nikon 18-105mm DX VR Lens
dslr camera lens nikon image

couthiewoo

I am seriously thinking about investing in a new DSLR camera. The problem is...there are just so many out there. I've been reading review after review, but I can't seem to find a standout.

My question is this: what is the best DSLR camera out there for ametuers? Keeping in mind, I am a beginner and will need to learn how to use the bad boy, but I don't want that to handicap my camera choice.

Any thoughts?

Answer
I personally prefer Nikon (strictly for DSLRs).

The Nikon D40 is a great camera, and I would recommend that if you get a Nikon, put the money you save by getting the D40 towards getting extra lenses or maybe a Nikon Speedlight like the SB-400.

The Nikon D40 is a great camera, try it out at a store, and see if you like it. It is also the least expensive of the Nikons, but about the same in terms of what it offers.

Last of all, try http://cnet.com - they have great reviews on every camera imaginable. http://dpreview.com is another great site for that. Check them both out!

You can get the D40 with an excellent kit lens from Amazon for about $450.00

Any other questions, feel free to send me a message.

Help with finding the right dslr camera lens?

Jackie

I'm looking into buying my first dslr camera but I'm kind of confused on what kind of lens to get. I'm looking for something with a really good zoom and I know for a point and shoot camera I'd want something that is over a 20x Zoom so what would this equal to for a dslr lens? I hope this makes sense, I don't know much about dslr cameras.

Answer
The most common kit lens is 18-55mm
which translates to 55/18 = 3.05x zoom

Nikon makes a 18-300mm, which translates to 16.67x zoom
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/18-300mm.htm

A 300mm fixed focus lens means 0x zoom
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/3004af.htm

You are looking at proper DSLR's & they dont operate the same way as point & shoots

What is a good starter lens for the Canon 60D for videography purposes?

best canon video lens 60d image

bob crane

I just bought the Canon 60D mostly for videography purposes. I am looking to purchase a lens with great wide angle and zoom capabilities. I understand I will have to eventually buy more than one, but I'm looking for one that is well rounded in both departments.

Any and all suggestions are appreciated!

Answer
EVERY person filming or taking pictures NEEDS a good PRIME lens such as a 50mm. A 50mm lens can be found for as little as $120 for a f/1.8, I personally would go for a f/1.4 which is about $200 more, there is really only two differences in the 1.8 and the 1.4; build quality and the F stop which is the aperture. I don't know if you know anything about aperture but the lower the F number the lower light you can shoot in (without cranking up ISO). I know you said you want a zoom lens, but at $120 for a 50mm I thought it would be a great addition to your lens collection allowing you to shoot in low light situations. Now a REALLY GOOD lens that is wide angle and zooms (a little bit) is the 17-40mm this is an L lens which stands for Luxury (and are denoted by the red ring on the barrel). The barrel of Canon L lenses are generally made from metal and the optics are superb. This lens isn't too expensive but it will run you a good $800 (these lenses are built like tanks, most are water-resistant, but I'd advise checking out your choice of L lens to see if you can have it out in a light rain). My advice to you is to search the website of your local camera store and look at the selection of lenses, this way you know your store either has the lens in stock, or you know they can get it in stock. Also, going to your local camera store and talking with someone who works there could be very beneficial, not only will they tell you a good lens for your needs, but you could learn some things on how to take AMAZING pictures and video.

What lens should I buy for my Canon 60D and how should I shoot music videos?

Lewis

I have a Canon 60D with a Canon 50mm 1.4 lens. I wanted a really cheap telephoto lens just to get me started off. Any recommendations? Also, I want to shoot music videos with my DSLR. Should I be shooting in 24p or 25p?

Answer
THe Canon EF 75-300 f/4-5.6 is available for around £70-85 ($100-120) on Ebay.

Not a great lens but ok as an experiment or get-you-by while you decide the best one long term

Which is The best DSLR Camera for me?

canon dslr camera eos 500d with lens 18-55 is on Details about Canon EOS Digital Rebel T1i 500D 15.1 MP DSLR Camera Kit ...
canon dslr camera eos 500d with lens 18-55 is image

C.

I have never owned a DSLR camera before But I want a camera that has very good quality images and takes good quality video as well. I am looking for quality better than a regular 14 megapixel digital. I have found three cameras for under 500 dollars on Jessops.com But im not sure if its worth paying 100 dollars more for a 15 megapixel camera rather than a 10 megapixel camera. All three are cannons.
So basically my question is..does a 10 MP DSLR camera take btter pictures than a 14 MP digial camera? and will the video quality be good? or should I buy the 15 MP DSLR? Is it worth the price difference?

15 MP model : Canon EOS 500D with 18-55 DC Lens
http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/78164/show.html

10 MP model : Canon EOS 1000D + 18-55 IS Lens
http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/75075/show.html
I can't figure out if this takes video?

A similar 10 MP : close Canon EOS 1000D + 18-55mm Kit (Not sure what the difference is from the one above?)
http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/75886/show.html ( Not sure if this has video either)

and will I need to buy additional lens?

Or if you have any suggestions? I definintly want video as well.

Thanks!

Answer
The 1000D does not do video. The 500D also beats the 1000D in AF points (9 versus 7), size of LCD screen, continuous frame speed and processor (Digic 4).

In other words the 500D is the one to go for over the 1000D.

At Jessops some other options are:

Sony a390 with 18-70mm lens
Pentax K-x (won TIPA best beginner DSLR in 2010)
Nikon D3100 with 18-55mm
Pentax K-r with 18-55mm

To begin with use the lens provided. You only need another lens when you've identified a use for it. e.g. I bought a 50mm f/2.8 to do portraits of my baby and a 70-300mm to take to an airshow. I would never buy a lens unless I have a specific need for it.

Cheap 50mm are availble on eBay for most camera models and they're very useful. They tend to be fast (f/1.8 or f/2.8 for example), good for portraits and low light and they also get you thinking and moving on your feet as you cannot rely on 'zoom.'

will a 28-80 & 75-300 camera lens do the same thing as one 28-300?

Brooke

Hello, I'm buying my first slr camera, a cannon 50d and I'm trying to find a good lens that will do everything from macro to zoom. I'm an amateur obviously, so the very best is not necessary. It seems that buying two lenses is much cheaper... so I'm wondering are these two lenses, the 28-80 and 75-300 tamron lens going to do the same thing as the 28-300? They both have the same f/3.5-6.3 aperture numbers. Thanks!

Answer
No.

No.

And no.

In theory you will get better quality from lenses with shorter zoom ranges, but in practice, in this instance, you wont.

Firstly: the quality of the consumer versions of the canon 28-90 and 75-300 are not particularly great full stop and actually pretty poor on digital (reflections of the sensor, these lenses were designed for film EOS cameras where this didn't happen) The high resolution of the 50D will further show these lenses up. The 75-300 is, in my opinion, unusable beyond 200mm.

Secondly: Range. 28mm is not all that wide on a 50D, the camera has a cropped sensor, so the 28mm behaves more like a 45mm. Not really wide at all. If your aim is to get a one lens fits all then this is the wrong lens.

You want a lens range that starts at around 18mm.
This gives you a couple of options at lowish cost:

The EF-s 18-200. Fairly pricey. A superzoom with all the compromises inherent to the nature of the beast.

OR

The EF-s 18-55 IS lens & EF-s 55-250 IS lens. This will probably be cheaper, with better quality.

The EF-s lenses are all designed specifically with digital DSLR cameras in mind, so you can count on far better results than from strictly film-era lenses which were 2nd rate when new!

You are buying a very decent camera in the 50D, there is no point putting cheap inferior glass on it.

If cost is an over-riding concern then I would recommend you go for a lower spec camera such as the T1i (aka 500D still a great camera) and use the savings to get better glass. This will give you better images.

So, T2i & kit 18-55 IS, & EFs 55-250 IS.

None of these lenses are macro, but again, macro isn't worth doing on the cheap. Save up for a Sigma 50mm f2.8 EX DG or Canon EF 50mm f2.5 macro. You might find that what you buy actually does all you need anyway.
