Answer
The Pentax K-x performs better than any other camera in its price range and as well or better than some more expensive models (test comparisons below). Check prices from B&H in USD then see test comparisons below

Pentax K-x w/18-55 $521 HD video
Pentax K-x w/18-55 and 50-200 $625 HD video
Pentax K-x w/18-55mm and 55-300mm $715 HD video
Nikon D5000 w/18-55 $700 HD video
Rebel XSi (450D) w/18-55 $560 No video
Nikon D3000 w/18-55 $550 No video
Canon T2i w/18-55 $900 HD video
Canon 7D body only $1700 HD video
Canon 50D body only $930 No video

With the K-x Image Stabilization and Auto-focus are both in the body. No need to pay for IS or AF with each and every lens you buy as with Nikon and Canon. This will save you significant cash throughout the years you own the camera.

Performance between the K-x and Nikon D5000 is very close as shown in this comparison
http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/eng/Image-Quality-Database/Compare-cameras/(appareil1)/320|0/(appareil2)/345|0/(onglet)/0/(brand)/Nikon/(brand2)/Pentax

The K-x outperforms the Canon T2i and Canon 50D See the comparison here

Its true there are more Nikon and Canon lenses available. Check the prices. Can you afford all the lenses available? If you can do you plan on buying each and every one? There are more than enough Pentax and third party lenses available for any photographer.

What lens fits the Pentax K-x?

Vernan

and which camera has the widest available lenses:
Sony Alpha A380
Olympus E-620
Pentax K-x.

Thanks!
I have decided for the D5000 but now I am considering other options because of price...But I know I have to look on the system and its future.

Answer
The Pentax K-x uses the "K" lens mount first introduced in 1975 so any "K" mount lens ever made can be used on the K-x. If its an auto focus lens from circa 1988 it will auto focus on the K-x as it should.

The Pentax K-x was chosen as the 2010 "Best DSLR Entry Level" by the 'Technical Image Press Association'.

Here is a review of the K-x:
http://www.shutterbug.net/equipmentreviews/amateur_digital_slrs/0510pentax/index.html

In my opinion a comparison of the Pentax K-x and the Nikon D5000 finds the D5000 lacking. The Pentax K-x has:

1) A CMOS sensor.

2) Live View.

3) HD Video.

4) Double/multiple exposure capability of from 2 to 9 pictures on a singlr frame with Auto EV Compensation.

5) A focusing motor in the camera body.

6) Image Stabilization in the camera body so any lens used becomes, in effect, an IS lens.

The Nikon D5000 has features 1, 2 & 3 but NOT 4, 5 & 6. If you want auto focus with the D5000 you must buy Nikon's AF-I or AF-S lenses. If you want IS (VR in nikonspeak) you have a limited number of Nikon lenses with that technology. In both cases you pay again and again for features found in the camera body of the K-x.

Current prices w/18-55mm lens from http://www.bhphotovideo.com

Pentax K-x, $499.79

Nikon D5000, $699.95 after a $50.00 Instant Savings from B&H. Offer ends 9-18-2010.

If you're bored with black cameras, the Pentax K-x also comes in colors.
http://www.pentaximaging.com/slr

The Sony A380 can use all the legacy Minolta Maxxum AF lenses dating back to 1985 and they will auto focus as they should.

What type of Canon camera do you suggest?

best canon lens everyday on Canon Lens under $1000
best canon lens everyday image

Katie

I am wanting to purchase a Canon camera and and trying to figure out which on will fit my needs best. I want to take images of the outdoors, climbing, hiking, backpacking, canoeing, snowboarding, panoramic views, etc and even occasionally everyday life and imaged of the on-the-way-to-professional variety. I don't' know if i need a wide frame lens to start with or another type. I also want a swivel screen as an accessory. What do you suggest that would fit my needs for this type of photography?

Answer
Canon EOS 7D is really great. I use it all the time, for a lot of things you just described...except canoing, lol...And depends what you're shooting you'll change the lenses...And of course, depends how much money you're willing to spend...

In the market for a digital camera with one specific feature - closeups. Which feature should i look for?

epic_laydo

I would like to take closeups of bugs, flowers, coins, etc. Besides an expensive SLR with a macro or whatever lens, would an everyday digital camera with a certain feature suffice my need? Thanks.

Answer
Most of the cameras nowadays have a feature called "Macro Mode" specifically for taking close-ups of small objects. This feature comes built into the camera without the need for additional external lenses.

I have a Canon S2-IS with "Macro Mode" and also "Super Macro Mode". With SuperMAcro mode I can get as close as 1 centimeter from the subject giving pretty impressive results. But in indoor conditions at very close range the camera tends to block the light falling on the subject. Ideally you would use the built-in flash but using this will cast a nasty shadow of the long camera snout, which is irritating. In these conditions you can use an external flash. But I personally prefer not to carry add-ons, so I increase the light sensitivity of the camera sensor by increasing what is called as the ISO number. An ISO number of up to 400 should be expected in a decent camera. You have to keep in mind that increasing ISO number also makes the photos to look grainy, its a balancing act.

So I would say,
- Go for a camera with "Super Macro Mode" feature
- With higher ISO speed (minimum of ISO 400)
- A good resolution (greater than 5 Mega Pixel) should also be handy

Also,
- Search for "Macro Photography" where you will also get many DIY kits for macro photography, if you have not already done so.
- Many camera review websites also take macro mode as parameter of comparison. So go through them before deciding on a camera.

I am thinking about getting a canon DSLR camera any suggestions?

dslr camera lens reviews on Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 review Cameralabs introduction
dslr camera lens reviews image

missyyymel

So I am into photography and in a couple classes and I finally feel ready to get a DSLR camera. I was thinking of getting a canon but I am open to nikon too, I also would like video with it which would make my price range pretty expensive. The highest I would spend would be 1300, I am not looking for the "best" and most "professional" camera just one that is good quality and an overall good camera. So any suggestions?

Answer
There are a number of good brands so don't be sold on the idea one brand is better than another. I would keep your costs down. I would get a DSLR with a short zoom (like a 18-55mm) to start for around $550 to $1100. Either a 12MP or 15MP will do just fine.

Below, I listed some links where you can look up reviews and see what camera works best for you.

The first link listed below is to a web page that lists the 4 DSLR cameras that can also do HD video that I am recommending you compare. This list will let you compare features and specs, also it has links to reviews of the cameras, the reviews include sample images from the cameras.

Also I included some links to some dealers so that you can try and get the best price. Some of these dealers are including some nice extras, free shipping is very common, and sometimes they are offering a free memory card and/or camera bag. Sometimes you have to click in the âadd to cartâ button to see the actual price.

Here are some models that I think are well worth researching with estimated prices:

Nikon D5000 12MP DSLR Digital Camera w/18-55mm VR Lens - $659
Nikon D90 12MP DSLR Digital Camera w/18-105mm VR Lens - $1065
Canon EOS Rebel T1i (500D) 15MP DSLR w/EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens - $769
Pentax K-x 12MP DSLR with 18-55mm Zoom lens - $550

Of a quick side note: I am a Nikon user, but think all three cameras are excellent. I like that the Nikon D5000 has the movable LCD screen, that would seem to be valuable in doing video. I am very intrigued by the Pentax K-x partly because it does HD video but also because of how impressive it seems to work at high ISO settings which can be great help in low light situations (see the photo.net link below). Do some research, I would ask some questions in the discussion forums at photo.net where photographers can share their experiences and samples of their work.

Hope this helps. Pick a price range, some features you know you want, and even consider which camera feels good in your hand a factor. Plenty of great cameras, get one you like and start learning the principles of photography and you will be on your way to making some great images. If you think I can be of any help, please to do contact me.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

What is the best zoom lens for canon EOS 50D?

Raquel

I don't have enough knowledge about camera lens. I just bought a new canon camera EOS 50D. I am also planning to buy zoom lens but I have no idea what is the best lens for EOS 50D. Your recommendation is highly appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
For the 50D you will need a 'good' lens if you want excellent image quality. A cheap telephoto lens is not a good idea for a camera like this, so don't even think about getting a budget one that only costs a couple of hundred dollars or so, because it won't deliver on image quality and will not be good enough for lower lighting. One with a wider (faster) aperture of f/2.8 is an excellent choice.

From the Canon lens/camera review site below (of the 50D)...
"Because the quality of the lens makes a big difference in the image quality delivered by a DSLR - especially one with the resolution of the 50D, I recommend buying (now or later), one of the better Canon general purpose lenses available. At this review date, the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens is my most-recommended 1.6x lens with the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens and the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM Lens being excellent alternatives."

Another excellent lens with a longer starting focal length is the EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L, with or without IS or the f/4 version with or without IS.

Check out the links below for reviews of all the lenses above (and the 50D) and other lenses...

What are the zoom capabilities of a dslr camera?

dslr camera lenses mm on ... Lens Canon EOS 7D 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with w/ 28 135mm Lens
dslr camera lenses mm image

Belle

So I am wanting to buy a camera, but I don't really know what to look for. I know dslr cameras have interchangeable lenses, and a standard one seems to be 18-55 mm. What does that translate to for zoom relative to a p&s? (Like, is it 30x zoom or something like that?)

Answer
If you are going to spend real money on a DSLR you need to stop misusing words. A zoom lense is a variable focal length lense. 30x is totally meaningless. 30x what? An 18-55mm lense can be set to any focasl length between 18mm and 55mm. Nothing else has any meaning unless you know the dimensions of the sensor the image will be focussed on. Then you can calculate the angle of view options available for a given focal length range.

What will I need if I go to school for photography?

lacrosse a

If I go to a community college for Photography and Graphic Design what will I need? Will I need an expensive DSLR Camera, Lenses, and Flash Bulbs? Will I need to get Adobe Photoshop? What is I go to a Private School? Will it change? On average, would you need all of these things before attending school?

Answer
It depends, so you will have to contact each school and ask

Some schools start their students out using some kind of film camera to teach the fundamentals of photography including shot discipline and self critique.methods

Others require the student to have a dSLR system started that they will be using while in school and after they graduate. Based upon that criteria, you will eventually have some rather expensive equipment while in school, but you do not need to buy everything at once. Usually one camera body and one lens will get you through the first year.

Which your school requires will be unknown until you ask

When I was at Brooks, I used a 4x5 view camera and Nikon 35 mm SLR

When I attended SDSU, I used my Nikon while working on the school newspaper as a staffer.

NOTE: Clash bulbs have not been used for over 25 years, so you don'e have to worry about them

What is a good professional video camera to use for videography?

best canon video lens dslr on Canon EOS 60D DSLR Camera with 50mm & 55-250mm Lens Kit - Best Buy ...
best canon video lens dslr image

AK

I'm looking for a camera to buy to start my own video company. There are so many professional cameras out there, that I want to get some opinions on what the standard camera for this is. Thanks!

Answer
A real pro-grade camcorder and not a DSLR that happens to take highly compressed video and has only mono-audio and no mic input or manual audio control?

The short list of features should include:
Lens system larger than 40mm diameter.
Audio-in connection(s) AND manual audio control.
Manual zoom, Manual focus, Manual Shutter speed, Manual White Balance, and other controls on the outside of the camera and easy to get to.
Least amount of compression applied to the video stream when writing to the storage media.

The starting point that meets all four criteria is the Sony HDR-FX1000, but this is only prosumer... Pro grade starts at the Sony HVR-V1U, HVR-Z1U, HVR-Z5U, HVR-Z7U, Canon XHA1 and Panasonic AG-HVX200 and JVC GY series... And they go up from here.

Other items to consider:

Tripod (Bogen-Manfrotto is a good start - the weight rating should be at least 2x your camera's weight; with a fluid head).

High capacity rechargeable battery or two (from the camcorder manufacturer, not third party).

Sturdy case to protect your investment (Pelican and SKB are my favorites).

Mics. This gets really subjective - but a minimum of one shotgun mic, one UHF full diversity wireless lav, one stereo mic. Of course, if you ALWAYS have your sound person with you, they they could supply these items.

Cables. 50 foot AC extension cable; two 25 foot XLR mic externsion cables.

Next level of things to get:

Lenses: Wide angle and tele... maybe tele-macro.

Filters.

Video light.

Battery belt for the video light - if sized appropriately, this could replace the high capacity rechargeable battery.

Steadying devices... SpiderBrace or other shoulder mount system. GlideCam/Steadycam vest system.

LANC.

Next level of things to get:

Camera crane (I like the Kessler + their tripod and head). This feeds into a bunch of cables (LANC extension, Video monitor, audio monitor) amd accessories (monitor, counterweights, etc..). Then whether you subscribe to the Kessler tripod wheels or need something like their dolly options or do something else... and of course, the remote pan-tilt head...

This list is incomplete - but more than I ever got... I guess because I never asked.

++++++++++++++

And a FAST computer with LOTS of RAM and tons of available hard drive space on external drives (at least do not use the same drive as the start up computer Operating System for the video editing project files)... and a good-sized monitor (20 inch or larger).

What is the best video camera for making low-budget YouTube movies?

Clayton

I am on a very low budget and plan on getting something a higher quality video camera later, but right now I can't really spend more than $500. What advice do you have?

Answer
HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video

Q. I have a nikon p500 dslr camera. and I was wondering if i could put lenses on it such as a fish eye lens? Sorry I'm new at this.

Answer
Well, the P500 is not a DSLR; its a P&S. You can not changes lenses on the P500. It might have a thread on the front of the lens that you can add filters to - You can't put a real fish-eye on the P500, just a cheap junk filter that tries to act as a lens.

What is the best dslr camera for an all around photography?

Kiel D

Hi, I just wanted to know, what are your suggestions, in the best dslr camera (any brand) considering the price, performance, and it's specialty. I'm currently using a Fujifilm Finepix S9500. It's my first dslr, and it's quite slow, and it has a fixed lens. I'm planning on looking for a better dslr. I use the camera for our church. Covering events like, sermons, parties, seminars, fellowships, concerts, and baptismal.
So, I need a camera that's quick, adjustable to present conditions, and can produce high-quality images even in harsh lighting conditions.
I'm looking for a camera that is good will a the events above. And I'm really praying for a better one.
Any suggestions?

Answer
"What is the best dslr camera for an all around photography?"

Whatever you can afford. New kits start around $600, while some decent used ones might be found for half that with luck.

"So, I need a camera that's quick, adjustable to present conditions, and can produce high-quality images even in harsh lighting conditions."

*No* camera does that. Screw anyone that tells you otherwise.

DSLRs require quite a bit of attention by the shooter. There is a point where shooting conditions get so bad that you have to improve them yourself or forsake the shotâeven the top-tier DSLRs can't do all of the work. Only experience can tell you when you need to add flash, have someone hold a bounce card by the door, bracket for exposure and spend some time in Photoshop, or try the shot tomorrow when lighting is better.

Church photography? Splurge on a good pan/tilt flash head and a decent wide aperture lens. Maybe even consider installing brighter indoor lighting. These will have much more effect on your images than the camera body.

Any photographers that can help me with lens selection?

best canon lens 300mm on Canon EF 300mm f/4 L IS USM Lens Review
best canon lens 300mm image

uhhhh hey

I currently have a canon rebel xti w/ 2 lenses. The first is the 18-55mm that came with it and a 75-300mm canon lens I bought.
I'm looking for an "all around lens" that will help me from having to constantly switch lenses.
How Important is the "IS" feature for image stabilization? is it worth the extra money? I'm a novice who is going to be taking classes this semester and would like advice from pro's! THanks!

Answer
Based on the body and lenses you have, and because you're a student, I'm guessing you likely have a limited budget. With that in mind I have a suggestion that might fall in the 'best of both worlds' category.

The EF 28-135mm might be a good choice for you. It's reasonably fast, being a f3.5-5.6, combined with a really nice focal length range for the price, since you're not a "pro" and don't expect or have the means to carry several bodies and a gaggle of lenses.

With this lens, the image stabilization is a feature, not a necessity, but it's certainly a nice thing to have. On the wide end, you'll probably gain at least a full stop, perhaps more, allowing you to shoot in less light than without IS. At the long end, you'll benefit from less shake.

The cost, less than $400 as I priced it, may on the outside of what you're able to spend, but it may be worth it for a pretty nifty all-around lens solution. It has a solid build quality and range for what it is - definitely not an 'L' series - but I'm sure you're not ready to spring for the professional series price tag, not being a "pro" and all.

Carry it with your 18-55 and I think you'll have a decent starter kit going.

Can I say "pro" one more time, lol?

What is a good canon lens for skateboard photography?

Nik

I am deciding between a canon 75-300mm, a 70-300mm, a 55-250mm and a 50mm.
Also what is some other good equipment to have for skate photography?
BTW I have a canon t2i.

Answer
Those lenses are way to long for what's generally seen in skate photography. Keep the 50mm though. Invest in a good wide-angle, and perhaps a fisheye lens.

some suggestions:

Wideangle:

Canon 10-22mm, excellent speed and image quality. Around $700.00
Sigma 10-20mm f4 - f5.6 if you're on a budget. Good Image quality too, about $450.00

Fisheyes:

Sigma 8-16mm fisheye. Excellent lens at half the cost of Canon's.

How do I convert a digital camera's zoom from x increments to mm?

dslr camera lenses zoom on Canon 450D DSLR Digital SLR Camera 18-55mm IS zoom lens + Extras ...
dslr camera lenses zoom image

Kinsey6

I have two digital cameras, one with a 10X zoom and another with a 15X zoom. I want to get a DSLR camera but don't know how to compare the zooms I have on my current cameras to how they're measured in mm on DSLRs. So what I'm wondering is, what is a 15X zoom equal to in mm, and how do I convert a 55-140mm and 55-300mm zoom lens back to x increments?

Also, I see some camera bundles with 2.5X lenses. Do these make, e.g., a 140 or 300mm zoom lens 2.5 times longer, or only provide a simple 2.5X zoom on the camera's body?

Thanks

Answer
Actually, you don't bother unless you're just curious. Then its simple division - divide the long end of your DSLR zoom lens by the short end. An 18-55mm zoom thus has a 3.05x zoom ratio (55/18 = 3.05).
A 70-200mm zoom has a 2.85x zoom ratio.

AVOID all "bundles" you might find on Amazon or eBay. Other than the acual camera and lens about 90% of the items included in "bundles" is junk. Things labeled as "2.5x Tele Lens" or "0.43 Wide Angle Lens" are NOT lenses they are cheap screw-in attachments that will do more to degrade your images than they will to help it. Also, notice that nothing included in these "bundles" has a name brand or even a name - just vague descriptions such as "... high power digital flash ..." or "... 4 section tripod ..." or "... 3 pack of digital filters ...". Junk. Junk. Junk.

Buy from a local store or a reputable on-line dealer. Here are just three:

What lenses do you think are ideal for all kinds of photography?

Susan Fern

I plan to buy a DSLR camera. I am a bit confused as to which lenses I should buy for covering almost all kinds of photography. If I buy 18-55, 35-100 and 100-400mm, can it be said that it is a good combination. I don't like big zoom lenses like 28-200 or 18-250. What are your opinions? I would like to hear from you.

Answer
Hello Susan. Your confusion is more than apparent. What I'm going to suggest is based on spending the last 39 years learning about and enjoying photography.

Buy the DSLR of your choice with the lens that comes with it. Now remove from your mind any idea of buying another lens. Spend the next 6 months learning how to use your new camera and learning the capabilities and limitations of the lens that came with your camera. During this time you'll also begin learning what type of photography you like doing the most.

Suppose you discover that exploring the close-focusing capability of the 18-55mm zoom is fascinating and you decide that you'd like to get into true macro photography. None of the lenses you listed is a macro lens so you'll have spent money needlessly and still won't have the lens you really need. A true macro lens will give you a 1:1 (life-sized) reproduction ratio. Take a picture of a 10mm long ant and it will be 10mm long on your sensor. A close-focusing (misleadingly labeled as "macro") zoom lens will seldom exceed a 1:4 (1/4 life-sized) reproduction ratio. Your 10mm long ant will be a mere 2.5mm long on your sensor.

Suppose you decide that shooting in low-light without the flash gets your creative juices flowing. You'll very quickly want a fast prime lens like a 50mm f1.4. A lens like this allows use of a lower ISO to achieve a faster shutter speed and a low ISO is always better for image quality.

You might find that wide sweeping landscapes are your passion and 18mm just isn't wide enough. Now you'll be wanting a lens as wide as 10mm to 12mm and those lenses you originally bought will be a further waste of money.

So, Susan, start with a camera and one lens. From July of 1971 to late 1972 all I had was a camera and a 50mm f1.7 lens. To zoom in I walked closer. To zoom out I backed up.

I have a Canon EOS Rebel 35mm with a EF 75-300mm Canon Zoom lens and the EF 35-80mm lens, also Canon. I'm currently torn between the Canon EOS Rebel XS and the T1i. There's about $200 price difference between the two, and it would seem as if the differences between them are minimal. But, I've already got two very nice lenses would they work better with one or the other, or a completely different model?

Answer
Any Canon EF mount lens can be used on any Canon DSLR or 35mm auto focus SLR.

The Canon EF-S mount lens CANNOT be used on your 35mm film camera or a Canon full-frame DSLR like the 5D or 1D.

The differences between the Canon XS and T1i are more than minimal. The T1i adds HD Video which accounts for the $200 price difference.

What is a small camera bag that will hold: PD-170 video camera, Canon 20D w/short lens, plus 30-70mm?

thejokker

For military photographer use, lighter and smaller the better. If it can hold a 70-200mm canon zoom lens a possible plus.

Must be able to hold both video and camera bodies.

Answer
Visit tamrac.com or lowepro.com and check out their offerings. Visit shutterbug.com and type "camera backpacks" in the Search box. They reviewed several in the Aug. 2007 issue. You can probably find reviews of regular camera bags there also.

Which telescope or eyepiece to buy to use with my digital camera?

panasonic lumix dslr camera with lens on Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1
panasonic lumix dslr camera with lens image

Jesus

I want to take photos mainly of the Moon, but planets and stars would be cool too, but my camera's lens is larger than the eyepiece of my current telescope, what to buy?
The whole lens measures 35mm and the area through which the photo is actually taken measures 25mm, its a Panasonic Lumix ZS5.

Help!

Answer
The best way to take pictures with a telescope is to use the telescope itself as the lens, eliminating both the eyepiece and camera lens. Since your camera is not a DSLR and does not have a removable lens, it really is not suitable for attachment to a telescope. I recommend you get some background on astrophotography by reading the chapters on astrophotography in the book below. Astrophotography is by far the most difficult and expensive aspect of the astronomy hobby.

what is my best option to buying a low budget pro DSLR Camera?

Josh Dolle

So, Im learning photography and I have been using a Minolta Film SLR for a while and I want to go to digital. I have a budget of $350 and I want to know what kind of good quality camera I can get. I am currently planning to buy a Panasonic Lumix G5 with the 14-42mm lens, then buying a minolta AF lens( Or canon lens, the old ones, if my grandpa will give them to me) to a Micro 4/3 adapter for around $350. If there is a better route let me know.

Thanks for any Help.

Answer
If you have Minolta AF lenses then they will fit and work perfectly on the Sony Alpha range of DSLRs. (Sony bought the Minolta camera division).
A58 is the entry level DSLR (DSLT really as it has fixed mirror and very high resolution OLED viewfinder. At semi-pro/enthusiast level is the Sony A77.. this has 2 control dials and allows individual back/front focus adujustments on lenses.

I cannot recommend fitting old lenses via adapters to smaller-sensor compact system cameras. If size of camera body is the problem then you may still be able to find a Sony A37.

I want to buy a new camera for my up coming vacation. I don't know what brand is best. I would like a long lens with it. I don't really want to spend more then $1000. So I'm hoping someone can help with recommending a camera for me. Thanks in advance!

Answer
Nikon Coolpix L20

Nikonâs new Coolpix L20 and its 10.0 effective megapixels, 3.6x zoom and a bright, high-resolution 3.0-inch LCD screen. Motion Detection automatically detects subject movement and adjusts the shutter speed and ISO to compensate for camera shake and minimize image blur. The cameraâs Easy Auto Mode with Scene Auto Selector simplifies your picture-taking experience by letting camera automatically select the best setting to get great pictures. Nikonâs Smart Portrait System combines four different technologies that will fix red-eye, detect faces, fire the shutter when your subject smiles and warn you if they blink, to get you great portraits.

GREAT CAMERA AND AT A GOOD PRICE...

what is a realy good camera for pics of like birds and animals and sometimes planes?

bb_player_

im want a good camera not skinny little digital ones i want the big ones with the long lens that take unbelivably good pic.(price does not matter)

Answer
HI there...

well, you answered your own question.... You have to have one of the digital SLR cameras that use the detachable lenses for the type of photography you are describing. You will need a long telephoto zoom lens to go with it.

Think of.. perhaps a Nikon or Canon DSLR. Nikon has the D40 or D60 which are relatively affordable and Canon has the Rebel series. What is more expensive are those telephoto zoom lenses. For bird and airplane photography you will need at least a 300 or 400mm range. For wildlife... you will need 200-400mm range. These type of lenses can cost as much and even more than a brand new camera. Can you imagine a $5000.00 lens???? There is such an animal.

But if price does not matter.... go into Wolfe or Ritz Camera Stores. There they will have salespersons that can give you the best advice as to what there is available.

Thanks for reading.

Which is a good semi professional camera and lens to buy?

best canon is lens for portrait image

Deepu

I am teaching myself photography as a hobby and would like to make it my second profession eventually. I would like to go in for a DSLR camera (second hand (body only) costing around 400 dollars (300euros)) and a good lens for portrait and landscape.

I would prefer a Nikon or a Canon camera. Please advice.

Answer
You can find the lens best suited for portrait by visiting the canon web site. Also the Landscape lens (a wide angle) is NOT the same as a portrait lens.

Why don't you buy the cheapest camera with a short (range) zoom lens and go from their. Then you could have your scenic lens at one end and your portrait lens at the other end!

What is the best Canon lens to use for portraits?

Meghan

I have heard a 50mm 1.2 lens is the best for engagements, seniors, newborns, and things like that, but i'm really not sure what to buy right now!
Opinions?!

Answer
Unless you have $1600 extra, the f/1.2 is kind of overkill. I prefer the 50mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.8, and the 70-200 f/2.8L for doing portraits.

Is it possible to take astrophotos using binocular?

best canon lens 60d on Canon EOS 60D (Kit 18-200mm IS Lens) Price in India 2013 22nd Nov ...
best canon lens 60d image

Sara

I have canon 60D and I want to start astrophotography, I want to know is it possible to attach a pair of binocular to my camera to get a better vision out of sky.
The next question: is my camera (Canon 60D) good for this job?

Answer
I've taken photos through both my bino's and my telescope, the trick is getting the camera lined up just right and at the right distance away from the other lens. The only thing you'll be able to take a good picture of is the moon probably, or terrestrial objects in the day. I suggest trying it out in the daytime to get practice. You should get a pair of binoculars which can mount to a tripod, like my Celestron SkyMaster 15x70's. Then you can hold the camera up to the eyepiece to get a decent pic of the moon. In order to see nebulas and galaxies (other than Orion's nebula and Andromeda) , you need a telescope. I got the Celestron Nexstar 6SE, but I should have got at least the 8SE. The biggest you can afford they always say. Once you have a telescope you can see Jupiter, Mars and Saturn clearly and can start doing webcam astrophotography (Google it, it's to much to explain here)

How do you know what lens will fit on your camera?

Maddie

I'm thinking about getting the Canon EOS 60D DSLR, but I'd like to know what lenses I could get for the camera later on. Thanks

Answer
Canon has 2 lens mount types:
- EF-S
- EF

EF-S Lenses ONLY fit on cropped sensor format cameras.
T3 up to the 7D and all the XXD camreas like the 60D butNOT on FULL FRAME CAMERAS like the 5D, 6D, 1D ...

EF lenses fit on any modern Canon DSLR
from the lowly T3 up to the 1DMkIV

So knowing this, it might be best to buy EF lenses over EF-S lenses in case you ever decide to upgrade to a full frame DSLR in the future.

How do you know if a lens will work with your camera?

best canon lens sigma image

-Mersadies

I have a Canon Rebel XT. I am in need of lenses but I'm unsure sometimes whether a lens will be compatible with it or not unless it's a Canon brand lens. The reason I ask is because I'm thinking of buying an off-brand lens (Sigma, Tamron, etc.) because they are cheaper. How do you know what will work and what won't?
I need a lens now. As much as I would love to wait and save up, I don't have time.

Answer
You are always better off buying the best glass you can. So save your money and buy Canon lenses for your Canon. After-market lens makers will specify which camera the lens fits so just buy a Canon EOS mount lens.

How does Sigma glass compare to Canon glass in general?

Tobasco

I've never shot with a lens that Canon didn't make, and I'm wondering if looking at other brands might be a good idea? I've heard lots of varying reports about different Sigma lenses. In your experience, how does the optical quality of a Sigma lens generally compare to that of an equivalent Canon lens?

Answer
On the lower end canon lenses it's not such a big difference. But overall, canon lenses (especially the high priced ones) are higher quality than sigma.

But the value of Sigma lenses make them great purchases. You can usually get several excellent sigma lenses for the cost of just one Canon L-series lens

Sierra Rog

I'm going to Las Vegas soon, and I'm thinking about investing in a really nice digital camera. I want one that will take really high quality and detailed pictures, but I don't want to pay $1000+ for a nice camera and all the screw on lens.
Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Sierra,
I've had my "Sony-Cyber shot" for almost a year and I found it to take amazing pictures.
Must give it a try. I paid $150. for it, but well worth it.
Have a great time in Vegas! Don't forget to visit the Aria @ CityCenter, it's amazing.
:)

How to take pictures of Las Vegas lights at night without a tripod?

Cary M

I am not a beginner at photography but definitely a novice. I have a compact digital camera with quite a few settings options. A tripod is out of the question, so how do I get decent shots with a fast shutter speed to eliminate blur from camera shake? The camera does have image stabilization but I'm not too sure how effective it will be.

Answer
Depends on how long you want to expose for.
If you just want to get the lights and no "fancy" effects then bracing yourself against something solid and with a standard to wide angle lens then you should be able to hand hold to about 1/15 without getting movement blur.
Alternatively, prop the camera on a solid object (wall, car roof etc).

Will the presence of condensed water on a digital camera lens for a few seconds damage its protective coating?

best camera lens wipes image

Britney

I blew some air from my mouth on my digital camera lens to moisten it so I could wipe off the oil smears from the camera lens with a cotton swab...then I thought if it would have affected the protective coating of my camera, is it my doubt or the presence of condensed water on camera lens for a few seconds or wiping with cotton swab afterwards could have damaged its protective coating?

Answer
in short, no.

the protective coating is pretty tough, and even without the coating there the lens is going to work fine.

how to remove adhesive marks from camera lens?

i just removed a sticker from my camera lens but the adhesive marks from the sticker doesn't go away.. how to remove it without scratching the lens? also hw to remove glue marks from glass surfaces?
sorry i don't have alcohol at home.. suggest an alternative!

Answer
rubbing alcohol for both of your questions.
It is gentle on the lens and the glass, and it will remove all left over residue.
wet a soft cloth with rubbing alcohol and wipe it a couple times!

it costs like 50 cents at the dollar store

What would I need to do or get to shoot videos at night with a Canon DSLR?

best canon 28mm lens on ... > Electronics > Camera Lenses > Tokina 28mm f/2.8 Manual for Canon
best canon 28mm lens image

filmfan

I have a Canon Rebel T3I camera that I intend to use to shoot some videos in the dark.
For example, I'd like to shoot some videos within the interiors of cars at night while maintaining the visibility on the passengers.
There will be no lights on in the car, and there probably won't be any around the car on the outside?
Will I have to get one of those LED lights that strap on the camera?

Answer
Look around the web for small LED panel lights that mount to your hot shoe. That would be the simplest way to add some light. For a more natural look, so it doesn't look like your passengers are being hit with a camera light, you might experiment with some small LED lights placed at the feet of each person, right on the floor. Or some soft LED lights near the dash to make it look like it's from the illuminated dash cluster.

try white light, maybe some warmer looking colored light for a more interesting look. Expect noise in the video. As the camera needs a higher ISO setting, noise will and can get pretty bad. Make sure you do a custom white balance (check your manual) before you shoot because you won't be able to fix funky color after the fact like you can with a still RAW photo.

Next up, you need a fast, fast lens (large aperture) the cheapest, and most common lens with a large aperture is the 50mm f/1.8. It's a sweet lens for defocused backgrounds, and low light/night work.

for inside a car and other tight spaces, the 50mm won't work too well because it's not a wide angle lens. The 50mm will be fantastic for walking around the streets at night, people in a restaurant at a candle lit table, people near neon signs etc.

For tight spaces, a wider prime lens like a 28mm f/2.8 (non USM) isn't too expensive, same for the 35mm f/2 although, that might not be wide enough. If you want a faster lens, like a 28mm f/1.8 it's expensive, the price of a cheap dSLR, and the prices are even more than that for better wide angle primes. I don't even list the wider angle prime lenses, the prices are very, very high.

For the future, when you want to do this kind of work for still photos and video, you need the best image sensor for high ISO performance within your budget. In the same price range of your Canon, better choices are Nikon's D5100 and Sony's A580. If you should buy another dSLR type camera in the future, and want to do shoots like these, come back here, ask about the best dSLR and mention it's for night work, you'll get pointed in the right direction. good luck.
