Q. What is best lens for canon 550d for fully body shots and half body any help would be great!

I would say Canon 50 mm f 1.8. It's cheap (under a hundred), and will be good for half body shot.
For full body shot, you'd have to step back a bit. At least it's not going to give you distortion if you're close to the subject (compared to a wider lens).
Try it with your kit lens. Set it at 50 mm. Is that a good coverage?

I broke my original lens and bought the same standard Canon 550D lens (EF-S 15-55mm) to replace it. How do I set it to autofocus again?

Have you check which position that the Switch is sitting on? Either On AF or MF. If it the switch is sitting on MF than Move that Switch back to AF.
