What is the best quality/performance digital SLR camera?
Also, what is the best lens? I primarily do landscape and nature photography, but also like to photograph people too.
I have a canon xsi right now.

Answer
The "best camera" might not be the best camera for you. Indeed the top of the line Nikon and Canon cameras have been listed, though of course Leica probably makes the best cameras and lenses for smaller cameras... but do you really "need" them. For the vast majority of amateurs, a 4 megapixel camera will do fine. That will produce a good 11x14, and maybe even 16x20 if you have correct exposure, etc.

As far as lenses, Leica, Nikon, Canon, Hasselblad, Zeiss, all create great lenses. Other good quality lenses are made by Olympus, Minolta, Fuji, Tamron, Sigma, etc. I'd stay away from other lenses. Even great manufacturers can have a dog lens or two in their inventory. Check out:
DPreview.com
kenrockwell.com
or others.

Landscapes- are frequently created with a wide angle lens in the 18-35 range, though some use telephoto lens.
Nature- will require a lens in the 200-400mm range.
People- 70-200mm is a standard for most portrait photographers.

What are the essentials for photography?

I am getting very serious about photgraphy, and i want to have everything i need to produce great photos..

I have a new camera, the lens that came with the camera, and another lens for landscape shots and such... and i have photoshop... what else do i need? (lighting? other lenses?)

Thanks for the help!

Answer
You do have the essentials now.

Probably want the following as well:

"The Camera" by Mr. Adams
"Understanding Exposure" by Mr. Peterson
Tripod
Polarizer filter
Carry Bag
Remote Release
Another Battery
Another Media Card
