smallest and lightest dSLR's: olympus
in realtiy any camera from any of the reputable dSLR camera makers will do (eg Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, Samsung, Sigma or Sony)

some kit lenses aren't as good as others, soem are very good

theres a lot of bullshit spoken int he camera world (usually Canon or Nikon or one of those is 'THE' best). the reality is their is not a lot to separate the various ameras technically at our near the same price points. the other manucfacturers have to try harder agianst the market leaders (Canon and Nikon) so that usully means you get more for your money.

Pesonally I bough an Olympus E510 twin lens kit. yes I could have spent more and bought one of the upmarket lenses but the lens I've got are plenty good enough for me.

What is the best DSLR Camera under £400?

I am looking into getting my first DSLR Camera as I am currently studying photography at A level and I need a better camera for a wider range of photographic possibilities. Due to me being at 6th form, however, means that I am not rich, and so I want a top camera for a low price (not eBay). There is a possibility of me buying lenses, too, if that makes a difference. The blurry effect is actually called 'shallow depth of field'.

It will be harder to get it on cameras that have small sensors.

Two of those mentioned are point & shoots. Only one is a DSLR - the D3100.

If you use a fast lens (like a 50mm f1.8 lens) or a macro lens on the D3100 you will get shallow depth of field.

I'm very new to photography, but need a high-quality camera to document some historical sites and places. I'll likely be visiting a lot of places for nighttime photography. I'm very new to the field of photography and have no idea where to begin camera wise. I'd like not to spend too much if possible (< $400). Thanks!

The problem with nighttime photography is that you can't get high quality without a tripod or possibly a high-end dSLR (eg a Nikon D700, D3s). An appropriate dSLR is out of the question but even a decent tripod chews up a quarter of your budget. That doesn't leave much for a camera.

I'm looking for a camera that can take really clear, great pictures without the big cost of many DSLR's. I'm only 16 and just recently fell in love with the magnificent world of photography. What camera do you think would suit a beginner with not such a high price? I was thinking on the lines of Nikon d40. How good of a camera is that? Anyone want to recommend a really affordable camera that takes amazing pictures?

Hi Well I just did lots of research for our first dslr so im happy to share my thoughts. We chose an Olympus E520 for the following reasons:

With the twin lens kit its amazing value for the money.
It has good build quality.
It has image Stabilization built into the body which keeps the lens costs down. Whereas Nikon have IS built into the lenses (more expensive).

I figure the single most important factor when learning is to take lots of photos. That means having a camera on you most of the time. The olympus is just about the smallest and lightest DSLR on the market.

It also has anti dust features, and "depth of field preview" which i think you will find the D40 doesnt.

Having said all that...the D40 would be an awesome camera...and definitely don't need more than 10 megapixels.

I prefer the Nikon build quality to Canon at the entry level.

The pentax K200d also seems like a very good entry level camera. Its just a bit heavy for my liking.

They will all allow you you to take amazing pictures...its 90% photographer and 10% camera.

you usually want Canon lens with Canon camera bodies...I wouldn't suggest you going with a Tamron to start off 28-300mm is a zoom lens

1st choice is better although the 75-300 zoom lens isn't that great......if it was me I'd just get the camera with the kit lens and get the 55-250mm IS later

I purchased a Canon EOS 1100D DSLR with a twins lens kit. I use the Canon 75-300mm lens very much as I usually photograph long distance subjects. I am into wildlife photography greatly (I go to my local park and photograph birds) and astrophotography plays a small part (I only shoot the moon in my spare time).

My photographs are not as sharp (or high in quality). I believe it is the inexpensive 75-300mm lens that causes this. It's not fast too so that becomes a problem when photographing flying birds. Unfortunately I cannot afford the Canon L-Series lens, a 400mm though that would be ideal for wildlife photography. 600mm would be a dream.

In fact, in the past, I thought of getting teleconverters to make is a 600mm lens but then I did research. My lens quality is not that great then it'll be even worse with teleconverters.

Anyhoo, are there any tips or advice I can get to improve picture quality while taking photographs of wildlife and the moon especially? I heard having a DSLRs aperture on lowest makes a camera not work as well than in quality than around f/8 for example but I am not sure if that is true. I hope this is not too much to ask for a single question posted. Thanks in advance.

Any of the Canon 70-300 mm lenses are good ones. The Canon 75-300 mm is one of the only dog lenses Canon ever made

I am a retired professional photographer. Over the years the camera store as I use to know it is disappearing. Ritz is good. But my purchases have been by phone to either B & H Photo 1-800-947-6933 in New York or Adorama 1-800-223-2500. Costco, Circuit City, and some other "big box" retailers would probably fit your needs.
