Cannon XS vs Sony a390 DSLR?

Sarah

I'm looking to buy my first dslr and i'm weighing these two options. The Cannon XS was released 2008 and its 10.2 megapixel but the Sony a390 was released 2010 and is 14.2. Here's my delema: i can get the Cannon XS for $400 including the original lens PLUS cannon 55-250mm lens. Or i could get the sony a390 for around $439 with the original 18-55mm lens.

So what it comes down to is what is worth my money? I just want a nice camera to take high quality photos

Answer
Buy the XS, the extra lens makes it worth it over the Sony and that's coming from a Sony shooter!

Don't worry about the mpix, the image quality of both cameras is the same in reality.

Do professional cameras come with a lens?

Elissa

Excuse my ignorance, i'm planning on buying a digital slr camera - and obviously to know everything about a camera you should use it & i've never used/bought this type of camera.

i need to know if the price of the camera includes the lens in it.

If the lens inclusion depends on the camera, i'm thinking on these opportunities:
NikOn D3000
Canon Rebel T3 (1100d)
Nikon D3100
Sony A390
Olympus E-620

Answer
When you buy a DSLR, you can either buy the body only (just the camera with no lenses) or as a "kit" (camera body and 1 or 2 basic lenses). Most ads will specify if a lens is included, but you should read the specifications to verify it. Since this appears to be your first DSLR, I would suggest getting a camera kit and taking a basic photography course at your local community college (some camera shops also offer decent courses).

The best thing to do is visit your local camera shop and see which ones have everything you are wanting and feels good in your hands. Both Nikon and Canon make nice cameras. I prefer my Canon for its ergonomics and the menu layout, a fellow photog prefers Nikon for the same reason.

Don't forget to budget in things like extra battery, memory cards, and a nice padded gear case to start off with and then start saving for additional lenses.

Which camera is better, the Sony A390 or the Canon Rebel XS?

Q. The Sony has 14.2MP and includes an extra lens w/50-200mm.

The Canon has 10.1MP and includes an extra lens w/75-300mm.

I would be taking pictures of children, newborns, pets, landscapes, engagement photos, weddings, maternity, etc, just to give you guys an idea. Definetly nothing in a magazine or on a billboard, Nothing would be bigger than an 8x10 if printed out.

I have heard many great things from the canon but haven't seen any reviews from the sony. I have also heard that the higher the MP are,the faster your memory cards fill up. I have a digital polaroid 10MP and I buy the 2GB and it can fit about 1000 pictures on the card.

Yes I know it has to be one that I AM comfortable with. I know that. I want to know which one is a better camera>
It comes as a package deal. The sony is cheaper at $516 and the canon is $619. The other canon with the 50-200mm lens would be $649 which I can't afford.

I really would be just taking pictures of my kid. Really want to upgrade from my crappy digital that can't snap a photo fast enough.
I just read this about the canon.....10.1-megapixel CMOS sensor captures enough detail for poster-size, photo-quality prints

Answer
I would take the Canon over the Sony without even thinking about it. The Rebel is capable of taking nice photos.

Here is the same kit at B&H for $599.98 (after instant rebate) http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/589104-REG/Canon_EOS_Rebel_XS_a_k_a.html

Check out your local camera stores (not electronic store), this week a local shop is having a "Canon week" sale (with Canon reps, giveaways, etc on Saturday). They have the same kit you are talking about or the Rebel XS with the 18-55 & 55-250IS lenses, for $599.98

But now the bad news...start saving your pennies if you want to get into the DSLR realm of photography (this goes for any brand).

You will want to upgrade the lenses to a faster lens (the lower the f/stop number the "faster" it is...f/2.8 or faster is better for dealing with inside shots due to less lighting). I would also suggest getting a flash diffuser for your camera to cut down on "bright spots"until you can afford a nice hot shoe flash that you can angle.

I would also suggest taking a weekend camera course at your local community college (or even local camera shop, sometime the basic course is free if you buy the camera there).

Good luck

Sony α390 DSLR .VS. Nikon - Coolpix L120 Helppppp?

I need help choosing one of these Cameras.. please help with the details?
I'm trying to start photography.

Answer
You are comparing apples to oranges.

The Sony A390 is a DSLR - Digital Single Lens Reflex - camera that allows you to change lenses to suit the conditions or express your creativity. It has an APS-C sensor that measures 23.5mm x 15.7mm and has 14.2 megapixels. This sensor size allows each pixel to be larger which means better performance in low light or at high ISO settings.

The Nikon CoolPix L120 is a "bridge camera" - a digital camera that resembles a DSLR but is smaller and has the same sized sensor as most compact digicams. Its sensor measures a tiny 6.16mm x 4.62mm and has 14 megapixels. With such a small area for 14mp to occupy each pixel is very tiny which means poor performance in low light or at high ISO settings. The L120 has a permanently attached lens.

The sensor in the A390 is 13 times bigger than the sensor in the L120. Each pixel is approximately 13 times bigger on the A390 sensor than the pixel on the L120 sensor.

In my opinion you should go to a camera store and handle both cameras. You may find that a DSLR isn't to your liking due to its size and weight.

Need to have more than or equal to 14 megapixels. Have to have awesome quality. When I take pictures, how can I cover my blemishes? Is there any mode that can do that? If there is, I want the camera to have it too. What is beauty mode? I'm just going to take pictures of me and my friends together. Maybe a little of scenery.

Answer
Below are listed a bunch of entry and mid-level DSLR cameras and approximate prices in US dollars, Australian Dollars and UK pounds. I think pretty much all of these will do a very good job. I have preferences amongst them....I guess in the entry level cameras, the Nikon D3100, the Canon EOS 600D and the Pentax K-r are the picks.
All of the mid level cameras are great.

In regards to megapixels.....I think you should just completely forget about it. Any camera with more than 8 megapixels is going to do the job. Honestly it's largely used as a sales tool to sell cameras to people who don't know about cameras.

I don't know what beauty mode is, but in portrait mode the camera just opens the aperture really wide. To soften blemishes, you need to think about how the subject is lit. Soft lighting (don't use the pop-up flash) or even using a sheet of white cardboard to reflect light onto the subject will work. Move the subject out of strong sunlight.

Entry level:
Nikon D3100 (18-55mm lens) --- US$550 / AU$740 / UK£440
Canon EOS 600D / Rebel T3i (18-55mm lens) --- US$900 / AU$1090 / UK£750
Pentax K-x (18-55mm lens) --- US$500 / AU$610 / UK£380
Pentax K-r (18-55mm lens) --- US$640 / AU$870 / UK£470
Sony Alpha A390 (18-55mm lens) --- US$500 / AU$560 / UK£390
Sony Alpha A55 (18-55mm lens) --- US$850 / AU$1100 / UK£600

Enthusiast / Mid-level:

Nikon D90 (18-105mm lens) --- US$960 / AU$1100 / UK£680
Nikon D7000 (18-105mm lens) --- US$1500 / AU$1500 / UK£1060
Canon EOS 60D (18-135mm lens) --- US$1300 / AU$1450 / UK£990
Pentax K-7 (18-55mm lens) --- US$980 / AU$1260 / UK£720

What camera would you suggest for the beginner photographer?

lalala

I am a high school student who has had very little experience with photography. I am currently working in my school's yearbook, and assuming that I do get an editor's position next year, I want to be prepared to take my own pictures whenever necessary and start now. I'm not looking for anything expensive... then again this camera will not be used to take random silly pictures of people. If necessary I would buy a used one. Any suggestions on a type of model?

Answer
Below are few entry level DSLRs which I think are worth a look if you want to go down that path. I use Canon, but I have not included them in this list because I think their entry level offerings are junk.

Entry level:
Nikon D3100 (18-55mm lens) --- US$550 / AU$740 / UK£440
Pentax K-x (18-55mm lens) --- US$500 / AU$610 / UK£380
Olympus Pen EPL-1 (14-42mm lens) --- US$430 / AU$480 / UK£350
Sony Alpha A390 (18-55mm lens) --- US$500 / AU$560 / UK£390

The other option is a compact. It's difficult to recommend compacts....there are thousands of them out there and in my opinion a $100 Canon is pretty much equal to a $100 Nikon and so on. There are compact cameras that I like a lot but they tend to be at the higher end of the price range.

For example the Canon G12 is a camera that journalists use.....I know a few guys in the army who use them. They are tough and reliable and give you some creative control in a small package. Nikon recently released the P7000 as their main rival to the Canon G12.
These are very nice little cameras. I would probably come down on the side of the G12 but I don't think you'll regret either of these cameras.

If you can give us a budget we might be able to give you better advice.
