Help with finding the right dslr camera lens?

Jackie

I'm looking into buying my first dslr camera but I'm kind of confused on what kind of lens to get. I'm looking for something with a really good zoom and I know for a point and shoot camera I'd want something that is over a 20x Zoom so what would this equal to for a dslr lens? I hope this makes sense, I don't know much about dslr cameras.

Answer
The most common kit lens is 18-55mm
which translates to 55/18 = 3.05x zoom

Nikon makes a 18-300mm, which translates to 16.67x zoom
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/18-300mm.htm

A 300mm fixed focus lens means 0x zoom

You are looking at proper DSLR's & they dont operate the same way as point & shoots

Can my lens fit most DSLR cameras?

bttrflybab

So I used to have a film camera (minolta) and I have a really nice lens that I would like to keep for myself when upgrading to a DSLR. I know this lens fits a Sony Alpha 230, so does that mean it will fit other models? I am debating if I should just get a different camera that is nicer but I want to make sure this lens fits the new camera. So what else can this lens fit if it can function with a sony a230 (it is an auto focus). Thank you :)

Answer
It'll fit any of the Sony Alpha series DSLRs, and via an adaptor will fit the NEX series, but with the loss of AF.

Sony make some very nice cameras further up the range, tell us what kind of lens it is and we can advise if it's worth sticking with Sony for or cutting your losses.

Tips for bringing DSLR camera on a flight?

Q. I'm planning on bringing my DSLR camera with only one lens on a domestic flight. I'm leaving the memory card and battery inside of the camera and I'm also bringing the charger.

Three questions:
1. Would I have to take my camera out of the camera bag, or would it depend on various things?
2. Would I have to turn my camera on, or would this also depend on something?
3. Do you have any essential tips to avoid unnecessary hassle/problems?

If you can answer any one of these questions, it would be appreciated. Stories of your experience with bringing a DSLR as carry-on would be great.

Answer
There are no hassles. Many people bring cameras. I have never seen any check point sign or read any regulations that say you need to take that kind of item out of you bag.

Laptops, CPAP machines, large gaming consoles or other large electronics do need to be removed, but not cameras.

There is no reason why they would ask you to turn it on. They can see from the x-ray image that there are only cameras parts inside.

The x-rays will not do anything to the camera or the card.

What features does the lens in a dSLR camera effect?

St Lo

I'm Looking to buy a dSLR camera and i was wondering what aspects does the lens affect and what aspects does the body effect. for example ISO, aperture and shutter speed.

Answer
The lens focuses the image. A better lens will produce a sharper, less-distorted images. A fast lens will allow you to shoot more easily in dim light. 1.4 or 2.8 are fast lenses. 4.5 or 5.6 are slow lenses.

The body contains the sensor. A good sensor records highlights and shadows well, and doesn't have a lot of noise or color problems.

The body contains the hardware and software for processing the information from the sensor and turning into an electronic image. Better software produces sharper, cleaner images with better color.

Q. I have a nikon p500 dslr camera. and I was wondering if i could put lenses on it such as a fish eye lens? Sorry I'm new at this.

Answer
Well, the P500 is not a DSLR; its a P&S. You can not changes lenses on the P500. It might have a thread on the front of the lens that you can add filters to - You can't put a real fish-eye on the P500, just a cheap junk filter that tries to act as a lens.

Hi, I just wanted to know, what are your suggestions, in the best dslr camera (any brand) considering the price, performance, and it's specialty. I'm currently using a Fujifilm Finepix S9500. It's my first dslr, and it's quite slow, and it has a fixed lens. I'm planning on looking for a better dslr. I use the camera for our church. Covering events like, sermons, parties, seminars, fellowships, concerts, and baptismal.
So, I need a camera that's quick, adjustable to present conditions, and can produce high-quality images even in harsh lighting conditions.
I'm looking for a camera that is good will a the events above. And I'm really praying for a better one.
Any suggestions?

Whatever you can afford. New kits start around $600, while some decent used ones might be found for half that with luck.

*No* camera does that. Screw anyone that tells you otherwise.

DSLRs require quite a bit of attention by the shooter. There is a point where shooting conditions get so bad that you have to improve them yourself or forsake the shotâeven the top-tier DSLRs can't do all of the work. Only experience can tell you when you need to add flash, have someone hold a bounce card by the door, bracket for exposure and spend some time in Photoshop, or try the shot tomorrow when lighting is better.

Church photography? Splurge on a good pan/tilt flash head and a decent wide aperture lens. Maybe even consider installing brighter indoor lighting. These will have much more effect on your images than the camera body.
