I have a Canon Rebel XS DSLR camera. I am planning on purchasing a film camera, and I found a Canon Rebel X 35 mm SLR film camera on ebay, but it's just the body. Could I use the lens from my DSLR for the film camera as well? Would it fit? It doesn't say what type of lens the film camera takes so I'm not sure if it is EF or EF-S. Thank you
Also what about a Rebel G?

Answer
If the lens you have for your Canon Xs is an EF-S such as the EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 it can't be used on the Rebel X. Only Canon EF lenses can be used on the Rebel X or a full-frame DSLR such as the 6D, 5D or 1D. An EF-S lens will damage the Rebel X or full-frame DSLR.

How can I which camera lens is compatible for my Nikon D70 camera?

triniedee

I'm relatively new at photography. I just bought a used DSLR Nikon D70. I was wondering if you can help me in selecting some new lenses for my camera. Are the lenses used for film cameras compatible? How can I tell if a lens I want to buy online would be compatible for my camera? I'm looking into buying some used ones. Thanks so much.

Answer
There's a very long compatibility chart here:
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility-lens.htm

Some of the ones that work with film cameras will work. Make sure it's a Nikon lens or a lens with a Nikon F mount.

Ideally, get a lens with an AF, AF-D, AF-I or AF-S designation. These will work perfectly with your camera, and will get you autofocus.

Older AI and AI-S lenses will mount and work, but no autofocus, and the camera will only work in full manual mode.

Series E lenses are same as above.

non-AI lenses will damage your camera. Don't get one.

What's the APS-C crop factor equivalent of a 50mm lens on a 35mm film camera?

I'm not sure if the question makes sense or not; but I have a 35mm SLR camera; with a 50mm f/1.9 lens on it.

I love the view of that 50mm f/1.9 lens on my film camera; what would be the equivalent of that lens on a DSLR (Pentax K-x)?

Answer
The K-x has a 1.5x FOV crop, so you'd require a 50mm/1.5FOV= 33.3mm lens. Or in practical terms, anything between 30mm and 35mm.

If you want to keep the f/1.9(ish) maximum aperture, Pentax has a 31mm f/1.8. Unfortunately, it's +$900 item: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/394223-REG/Pentax_20290_smc_Pentax_FA_31mm.html

And to achieve the same shallow depth of field as your f/1.9 on a cropped body (using a 30-35mm lens instead of 50mm), you'd actually have to use f/1.4. You can run the numbers for yourself to verify this: http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html

So, enter Sigma: they have a 30mm f/1.4 for 'just' $440: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/433041-REG/Sigma_300109_30mm_f_1_4_EX_DC.html The reviews are so-so but there's not much else out there that does the same. For a while I considered getting one for my Nikon D200 (also with a 1.5 crop factor.)

Can a digital camera lens be used on a film camera?

Luiz Pedro

I have a canon 50D and im thinking about purchasing a film camera for school. The lens on my canon is the standard one that came with it. Im thinking about buying a film canon SLR and just wanted to know if the lens from my 50D would work with any. And if it only works with particularly SLR's which ones.
Also if anyone has any recommendations on what film camera to get that would help too.

Answer
The lens that came with your Canon 50D is most likely an EF-S lens which means it cannot be used on a Canon AF 35mm film camera or Canon full-frame DSLR like the 5D or 1D. A Canon EF lens can be used on any Canon AF 35mm film camera or cropped sensor Canon DSLR or Canon full-frame DSLR.

Here is a listing of the Canon EOS Rebel AF 35mm film cameras from March of 1987 through Sept. of 2004: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EOS
