Best inexpensive camera to get?

Chain

My birthday is in a couple of weeks. I'm turning 17. I love taking pictures, and I always get compliments on my photos, but since my camera suddenly stopped working last Summer, I've only been using my iPhone to take pictures. I want to ask for a new camera for my birthday, but my limit is $200. What should I get? :) a link to where to buy it would also be appreciated. I promise I'll give good ratings to best answer!

Answer
You should add where you live like the USA or India, where? In order for us to give you "where" good deals on cameras are located.

I would look at the Fuji line of bridge cameras they offer the best value in your price range. Plus the magnification of the zoom lens will "blow you away"!! And they stand behind their products.

P.S> buying a DSLR camera as suggested by another is speaking from his pocket book, no yours. Yes DSLR cameras are nice but the endless cost of lenses is not for everybody, maybe him, but not you as you describe yourself.

Need to buy a nice camera..but dont wanna spend a million bucks!?

Wotz in d

Im a fotographer by passion....havnt taken any formal training....but this field interests me...
I want to buy a camera tht is ....
1) very handy...cnt carry those bulky ones everywhr.
2) better megapixel so tht i can print posters out of them.
3) something tht has nice zoom and captures jerky moments well...
like speeding car.....jumping kids...
4) cost effective....bcuz im not taking it up as profession....
5 ) i live in India.
please suggest.

Answer
I know exactly how you feel about photography being your passion ...

You do not want the Huge bulk and weight of a DSLR to start with; not to mention the expense. I feel you there too.

As long as you are not doing sports photography where you have to take like 8 photos in a row under 3 seconds, you might want to think about one of the new Ultra compact, Mirrorless, interchangeable lens cameras out there.
Olympus cameras come with In Body Image Stabilization, Perfect for those jerky, jumping moments.
And right now they are selling the Olympus E-PL1 for a steal. Places are listing them now at half or less of what their introductory price was over a year ago, just to clear inventory.
Like here ---> http://www.buydig.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=OMEPL11442BE

I think its perfect for you because you can use this camera as ether a fully automatic point and shoot, or you can use it in full manual mode controlling every aspect of your camera. Just as versicle as any other $500 entry level DSLR, but with at least half the weight of one and such a small size that you can put it in your pocket.
Read this great Detailed review of the E-PL1 here http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/olympusepl1/

And don't forget to look at page 3 where they show someone holding the camera so you can tell just how compact it is.

Don't let anyone tell you that you can't get professional looking photos with this type of camera because they are just ignorant. Many professional photographers have this exact camera and carry it with them when they are out of the studio just walking around. I even know of one professional print for sale where the photo was taken with the E-PL1 because that happens to be the camera the photographer had on him. Its a large fantastic wall hanging photo 17"x22" print, of a NY city bridge scene. this is the link --> http://theonlinephotographer.typepad.com/the_online_photographer/2012/04/print-offer-small-sensor.html.

I have a copy and it does look way better than the sample on that page. So that's just an example of how you can do great work with this type of camera.

You would also find many professional and pro-amateurs at this site http://www.mu-43.com/ that would recommend it, and can tell you anything else you want to know about the camera, or possibly an alternative. There are many people on that site from your country and your part of the world so you might enjoy that. Also you might want to look into the "E-PL1s" model, which was an upgraded version of the E-PL1, with higher ISO and better kit lens. It was only available in Japan and Korea when it came out , and maybe you will find one used around your part of the world. I been looking for a used one for sale but they are all over seas and shipping makes it not worth while for me here in New York.

Plus like any other SLR system you can buy tons of great lenses for it to expand your system later, but the lenses are much smaller and lighter than the ones for DSLR cameras are.
Also you can message me from my profile of you have any questions or are looking for a camera like this at a used or refurbished price for even less money .

I want your guidance on DSLR & Lens available ?

phatkar

I want to purchase DSLR, I am new to digital photography & want to purchase one good camera along with one lens.

Mainly I want to use it for day to day photography, surely not for fashion or wildlife photography.

After looking at catalogues related to cameras & lens, I am confused & not able to make my decision.

I like canon EOS 400D & 450D with good zoom capabilities (may be 30X) but not sure about Nikon & I have no idea about lens & its functions.

Can all masters here suggest me one ??

Budget 30000 Indian Rupees

Answer
The Canon 400D and 450D are very good cameras. The 450D is newer and it has more megapixels, a slightly larger LCD screen, and it has Live-View (which lets you use the LCD screen to take pictures). These are minor improvements, but nice to have. The image quality and all of the other important things are the same.

Canon also makes a 1000D model. The 1000D is also newer than the 400D, but these two cameras are almost identical. And like the 400D, it is cheaper than the 450D.

Personally, I think that the only real advantage of the 450D is the slightly larger LCD screen. I would not pay the higher price for that. (In the USA the price difference between the 400D and 450D is $80.)

Instead, I would get either the 400D or the 1000D - whichever one you can find cheaper in India. In the USA the price is almost the same... because the camera is almost the same.

Lenses...

All three of these cameras can be purchased as a kit with the Canon 18-55mm zoom lens. This is only 3x zoom, but that is enough for about 80% of what most people photograph. You can buy lenses with a lot more zoom range, but that would go over your budget. For example, Canon has an 18-200mm zoom (11x zoom) and Tamron has an 18-270mm zoom (15x zoom) for Canon cameras. (This Tamron lens has the biggest zoom range of any lens for a dSLR camera. A 30x zoom lens does not even exist.)

If you want to get the most zoom range within your budget, purchase the camera with two lenses: the 18-55mm and either an inexpensive 55-200mm lens or a cheap 70-300mm lens. But since you do not mention anything that requires a lot of zoom range, I would start out with simply the 18-55mm lens. You can always purchase an additional lens later on.

Nikon...

The Nikon D60 and the cheaper D40 are also within your budget. The D40 is actually cheaper than all of the Canon models, but it is also the least advanced of all of these options. Still, even the D40 can produce fantastic images. The only thing that it really misses compared to the rest, is that it only has 6 megapixels. This matters if you want to create large prints (larger than a full page) but otherwise it's not that important - the number of pixels says nothing about image quality.

If you have the opportunity, compare some of these cameras in your hands at a camera shop. You might find that you prefer the way a particular brand feels or works. If so, let that be the deciding factor, because this image quality and the important functions are the same with all (five!) of these cameras.

If price alone is the deciding factor, I would get the Nikon D40. It is perfectly good and it is the cheapest of the bunch. This would leave the most money for (extra) lenses or other items.

Which is the best choice for an entry level photographer?

Q. Hi, friends out there. Can anyone please help me which DSLR should i go for?

SONY Alpha 200 or CANON EOS 1000.

Please have a look at my photographing need at
http://www.flickr.com/photos/mathan/

And tell me the PROS and CONS of both these models. And also the price of both in INDIA, esp CHENNAI please.

Answer
Since there are so few current lenses for the Sony, Canon would be the best choice here. Add to that, the vast number of "legacy" used lenses available for the Canon system (since 1988), you will increase your chances of building a Canon system faster for less money.

I have no knowledge of the cost of such cameras in India.

Comparing side by side.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_eos1000d,sony_dslra200&show=all

You will also see that the Sony attempts to use a image stabilization scheme that involves using the cameras sensor, a compromises since each focal length of a lens needs a different kind of compensation ... this is why the two companies who make professional grade DSLR's use specially designed elements in the lenses that will benefit the most using a kind of IS (called VR on Nikon lenses). In the case of both Nikon and Canon, the IS/VR can be shut-off to speed up the auto-focus under certain conditions.

out of sony, nikon and canon, which is the best for a digicam?

i want answers frm amateur n professional photographers frm india preferably.if there s a better company please tell me. i'm more interested in the quality of pics and durability rather than a stylish digicam.

Answer
Since you are looking for quality of pictures, I will point you towards the SLR's. They are head and shoulders above the point and shoot cameras for quality of pictures. In the pronsumer-level market, I favor the Nikon D80.

The February 2007 issue of Popular Photography has an article where they compared the top 10 MP DSLR's. I took the scores and ranked the cameras similar to the way Formula 1 gives championship points. I just gave 5 for 1st place down to 1 for last place, splitting the difference when cameras tied in their catagories.

They evaluated Image Quality (giving this twice as much weight as anything else), Ease of Use, Control, and System Flexibility.

The final order and my scores are:

Nikon D80 - 17.5 points
- BEST in Image Quality, Control and System Flexibility
Canon Rebel XTi (400D) - 13.5 points
- Tied for best in System Flexibility
Pentax K10D - 11 points
- Tied for best in Ease of Use
Samsung GX10 - 11 points
- Tied for best in Ease of Use
Sony Alpha 100 - 7 points
- LAST in Image Quality, Ease of Use and System Flexibility."

Then again, this is the same magazine that put the Sony Alpha 100 dead last in this comparison named it the camera of the year in the previous issue! (In a follow-up to this seeming error, Pop Photo published the explanation that only the D80 and the Sony had been tested by the end-of-year deadline for choosing the Camera of the Year. Sony won on the strength of low price and built-in image stabilization. The other 3 that beat Sony in shoot-out were not tested until after the Camera of the Year was selected, because they were not yet available.)

Go to the original question and read the responses for more opinions.

If you want to get the "best" for the real world, consider the Nikon D200 or Canon 30D if you can afford it. For about $300-500 less, look at the results of the recent PopPhoto test and choose from that list according to your taste.

Personally, I use a Nikon D200 and would recommend it without hesitation to someone who has some knowledge of photography. For someone who wants the "best," but is starting with somewhat of an "entry level" knowledge base, I'd suggest the Nikon D80.

There are people out there who will state their preference for the Canon cameras and I will not argue with them. The Canon 30D and 400D are excellent cameras as well.

You would have to visit a camera store or camera department and pick them up and see what you think.

This review is now available online at:

http://www.popphoto.com/cameras/3569/10mp-dslr-shootout.html

Here's another reference from outside the photographic press. Consumer reports compared the Nikon D80, Canon Rebel XTi and Sony Alpha. Personally, I'd say that the Nikon came out on top here, also. It beats the Sony in "noise-free ISO" with an acceptable rating at ISO 1600 (kind of optimistic, I think...) compared to the Sony's ISO 400. It beats the Canon (in my opinion) by having a spot meter that the Canon does not offer.

http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/electronics-computers/news-electronics-computers/november-2006/shootout-10-megapixel-digital-slr-cameras-11-06/overview/0611_digital-slr-shoot-out.htm

Here's another comparison of interest:

http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/content/Canon-Rebel-XTi-vs-Nikon-D80-vs-Sony-Alpha-A100-Head-to-Head-to-Head-Digital-Camera-Review-.htm
[Note the navigation menu near the top of the review]

The next thing to consider is what lens to start with and where you go from there. If you are new to this, I'd say to just get the "kit" lens, which seems to be the 18-135 lens for the D80, and get started. Once you know where you really want to go with your photography, Nikon has an almost unlimited family of lenses to choose from.

some of the cameras that i have researched through this period : Nikon series P510,D3100,D3200,D5100 & CANON series SX40HS,1100D,550D
also Its not a case of mixing both DSLR and point and shoot ...i am actually confused with long zoom range of point and shoot(bridge) cameras and DSLR's long shoot camera lens are high price range(and mine only a budget of 35000)
so kindly please provide a suitable suggestion for which camera (also any other cameras u can suggest) to buy within my price range

thanks in advance
Suggest a Camera to buy in below 35000 price range?

Answer
True you can get a DSLR with the 18-55mm kit lens for 35k
but long zoom or low light will mean additional lenses
and mind you quality lenses cost money ... loads of money

35k for a bridge sounds more reasonable
Panasonic have launched the Lumix FZ200, unfortunately yet to be launched in India
Ditto features as the FZ150, http://www.panasonic.co.in/wps/portal/home/products/digitalav/digitalstillcamera/superzoom/dmcfz150
but with a constant aperture of F/2.8 throughout its zoom range + more
http://www.dpreview.com/products/compare/side-by-side?products=panasonic_dmcfz150&products=panasonic_dmcfz200

Hopefully price will be 35 to 40k
check if it suits you
