Just for interest sake, what camera and lens equipment do you own? and what type of photography do you do?

David Jane

I own a Nikon D60, with 18 - 55 mm lens.
A Manfrotto tripod and camera bag.

I plan to buy a Nikon D90, flash to mount, with a zoom lens, wide angled lens and a macro lens.
I want to shoot portraiture, and events with the occasional landscape and wild life shot.

Answer
Current equipment list....

Cameras...

Digital
Canon 40D

Film
Canon A-1
Fujica ST-605
2x Zenit EM
Cosina PM1
Sigma Mark 1
Olympus Trip 35
Olympus XA2
Ricoh 500GX
Ricoh FF3 AF Super
Cosmic 35
Yashica A
Voigtlander Vito C
Wirgin Edixa
Fujica Auto-M
Zeiss Ikon Nettar 515/2

Lenses

Lots and lots, I'm not at home so can't recall them all right now. Most are fixed length prime manual focus lenses. I think I own only 3 zooms, Canon 35-135mm, 70-200mm and a Sigma 39-80mm in M42 mount. I have about 7-8 prime lenses in M42 that I use for my SLR's and also on my 40D with an adapter. I also have a few Canon FD lenses including a 50mm f/1.4 and Vivitar 200mm f/3.5... Most of the cameras I prefer to use have a fixed lens and is not interchangeable, such as the Zuiko 40mm f/2.8 on the Olympus Trip 35.

Other equipment includes...

Various external flashes (which I never use)
Camera shoulder bag
Tripod
Filters
Lens hoods
Grey Card
Computer software
Film (Fuji X-Tra 400 is a current favourite)

etc......

Nearly all of my digital equipment is unused these days, I prefer to have a small 35mm rangefinder or zone focus camera with a fast prime lens which I can carry in my pocket, rather than have to lug around a DSLR.

My favourite style of shooting is street photography, hence my preference for small, quiet, unobtrusive cameras.

Model number of type of camera lens?

I would like to get a close friend a camera lens for the holidays. I managed to get some clues and ideas to specifically pick out what she wants. I know shes uses a canon (i dont know the model) and Tokina lenses. Can anyone tell me what a "full frame" lens is and what type of Tokina lens (model) would produce that type of image?

I've searched online and I dont understand the specs of the lenses as I am not a photographer so if anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great.

Answer
You still don't have enough clues.

Does your friend in fact have a Canon 5D or 1D camera, thus the need for EF or EF compliant lenses (full frame)? The most important thing you would need to know is 1) what lenses she has already and 2) what subjects she shoots but does not have the lenses she wants

Just buy your friend a gift card and let her pick the lenses she wants

Here is a link to all the Canon cameras available for full frame Canon cameras

and all the Tokina lenses

What type of Nikon Camera/Lens to buy?

Stephanie

I am looking for a nice Nikon camera to take pictures with. Probably the smallest Nikon that you can attach different lenses to & preferably one that doesn't weigh 100 pounds. I am also looking for a fisheye lens. Any recommendations? and If you have any, where to get them?

Answer
the smallest and lightest DSLR camera is the Nikon D3100

for fisheye lenses, the cheapest one I know of is a Rokinon fisheye lens for around $300
a good, quality fisheye lens will cost anywhere from $700-1500 or so

What type of cameras, lens do photographers use for these professions?
.Editorial
.Portrait

my budget would be around 500-1,000.
Im looking for a camera that has the body & lens together

Answer
Just so you know, you're not getting any answers, because of your budget. Sorry, but photographers doing that kind of work use camera body's ranging from 5K to 50K, and that doesn't include lens's!

You might have a look at a Canon Rebel, or a Nikon D60 kit, fine to start out on.

is there something i can put around my camera lens to get toddlers attention?

What type of high-end Digital Camera should I buy?

faboosh22

I would like to purchase a higher end Digital (or regular film) Camera that takes some great actions photos. Which model(s) should I look into, which type of camera or lens should I look into also? Hopefully I can get quality shots. Thanks

Answer
You want a (digital) SLR. Digital compact cameras aren't fast enough to take action shots. For one thing, all compact digitals work with electronic viewfinders. Electronic viewfinders have a tiny delay when projecting the image to the viewfinder/ screen. This means that when you press the shutter button, you're already a few 100th of a second behind the action, and for action shots this DOES matter - you will always miss the critical moment. Digital SLR = no delay = you get the shot you intend.
There are 2 great digital SLRs for around $600 with a walk around lens included: the Nikon D50 and the Canon 350D (a.k.a. Rebel XT). Both will be excellent for you. For action shots, you may need to zoom in a lot, so get an additional lens for that - something like a 70-200mm zoom. The whole package should cost around $800.
If your budget is less than that, you've got a bit of a problem. I recommend you get a mechanical SLR in that case. Digital compacs mey seem like a great alternative, but I assure you, they will NOT get the job done!

How do you take completely clear pictures with a DSLR camera?

best type of camera lens on March 23, 2009. See new material under

Whenever I take pictures, regardless of the settings and all, my pictures are always blurred in the background. What type of settings would allow me to take pictures that aren't blurred in the background? And/or, what type of camera lens would help me achieve completely clear pictures? Thank you!

Answer
Two things influence depth of field

* aperture
* length of lens

Smaller apertures like f/16 or f/22 increase apparent depth of field

Shorter lenses like wide angle ones create greater depth of field. Long lenses, telephoto, reduce the depth of field

What kind of camera and lens is needed to take a picture of people spelling out words on a football field?

We will have to have about 1000 people in the photo. We are not sure how high we should be or the type of camera and lens to use. Also does anyone know how long it might take to arrange the people?

Answer
You could use a wide angle lens and take the picture from on top a ladder, but wide angle lenses tend to distort. That means the people in the middle will show okay, but the ones on the edges will look tiny and far away.

I'd go for something normal (35-55mm) from higher up, like a rooftop. A standard single lens reflex camera would work fine, either film or digital.

As for how long it takes to arrange them, try a practice run first to find out. I think it would depend on the people involved, and practicing would make it go faster and more smoothly.
