Canon 20D Lenses?

I own a canon 20D and am looking to purchase a zoom lens and/or a wide angle lens. I am a student and therefore don't have a lot of money to spend, so am just looking for the basics. I am eventually wanting to pursue photography as a profession and therefore I am after quality lenses.

Quality is a subjective term. The all around best lenses would be the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L and the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L because not only are these optically superior lenses, but the rugged construction makes the perfect for taking out on the sidelines to shoot a game or in the woods for wildlife.

Now, price can be an issue so optically, the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 and the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 are awesome lenses with excellent optical quaility, but they are not nearly as rugged as the 24-70mm f/2.8L. The Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 is a great lens optically and competes well against the Canon but again it is not as rugged as the Canon L series.

Price: The Canon lenses will run around $2900.00 for the top of the line 70-200 with image stabilization. The Sigma combination will run around $1200.00 so you will have great optics that can last a liftime but you will need to be more careful with the equipment.

What you have to ask us is which lens do you need for shooting the subjects you like

This could be a 10-22 mm wide angle lens for brilliant landscapes
Or a 60 mm f/2.8 macro lens
Or the 18-55 mm that comes with most entry level cameras
Or 70-300 mm IS if you want to shoot sports, action or some wildlife
Or 300 mm f/2.8 or 400 mm f/2.8 if you are shooting sports indoors or at night or are a serious wildlife photographer

I need a good all-around lens for my Canon 20D.?

I just got the 50mm f/1.4, which I LOVE and use a LOT of the time. I want to have one more lens for versatility, but I can't decide. I've looked at Canon, Sigma and Tamron. I want some kind of zoom, but I don't know if I should get something that goes to the 70-90 range, one that goes to 105-135, or one that goes all the way to 200-300. I don't do much landscape photography. Mostly candids and animal photography.

I just bought the 20D and the 50mm f/1.4, so I have to keep this next one preferably around $200-$250 used (so I guess like a $300-$350 lens?)

My main criterion is sharpness. I'm obsessed with clarity. I can fix color later in Photoshop, but I need something that will give me clear shots of moving (but not quickly) subjects. So I guess I'd need at least f/3.5. Correct me if you think an F/4.5 would do it!

Canon has just introduced a new lens that would probably be perfect. It is the Canon EF 18-200 F3.5-5.6 IS. It is a very versitile lens with image stabilization (IS). The IS will provide you with a couple of extra stops when hand holding. It wont help you stop action but it will greatly reduce camera shake. Remember to freeze action you need fast shutter speeds. This lens will be about double your budget though. A good lens for you might be the 28-135 F3.5-5.6 IS USM. You should be able to pick it up used for $300 new for $400. It is not the best for sports but it is a good quality lens that has a nice focal range for most subjects. It is also very sharp though not quite as sharp as your prime lens.

Does IS still function when using a teleconverter?

I am thinking about buying a Canon 2x II Extender EF - Autofocus to use with my Canon 20D and my 70-200mm IS f/2.8 lens. I understand that if I use the teleconverter with this lens that I will be limited to only using the center focus point of the camera, but the real trick is whether or not the IS function will still work or not. Any thoughts? Also, if you have used this product before, what are thoughts on it? Thanks.

Yes, IS will still work.

I've NEVER heard of someone being satisfied with the image quality from the 2x converter, ESPECIALLY on a zoom, and even more so on a zoom that's not exactly noted for being RAZOR sharp at 200mm (I've used 4 of them now... great lens, but wide open at the long end you're not gonna cut yourself on the pics). I've never been remotely satisfied with the 70-200mm on a 1.4, let alone a 2x.

I know many photographers who feel the IQ is better with stacked 1.4x converters, oddly enough.

I'd suggest that you're not going to be very happy with this setup. If you really need 400, then consider the 400 5.6 (really great IQ) or the 100-400IS (more versatile).

OK, I am totally new to this, right now I have a Vivitar 3710, which is totally crap, it takes horrible pics. OK, what I need is someone to help me. I will spend the money for a good camera that will last a lifetime, lol. I want a professional camera, with one of those huge lens things, ( that might be an attachment, bought separately).

Unless you are 100% sure that this is something you want to pursue, I'd really advise against spending the big $$$ on a digital SLR right now.

If you must have an SLR camera, do as another poster suggested and get an inexpensive film SLR body. Choose the brand that you'll ultimately go digital with--you can use the same lenses on the dSLR.

If you have to go digital, look for an inexpensive point and shoot digital camera with manual controls (Aperture priority, Shutter Priority, full manual, control of ISO), preferably with a hotshoe for an external flash. This is the route that I went--my first camera was a Canon G2. This allowed me to get a basic understanding of photography and put me in a better position to know what I wanted out of a digital SLR.
