Which Canon lens should I get for video?

Mark

Hi.
I want to shoot videos of my singing/piano - I have a Canon 550D/t21 Rebel - and wanted to know what kind of lens I should get. Heres an example video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9o64xyjGWA
I've been trying to achieve that sort of visual - but I don't think I can get it with the lens that comes with the camera. Please help :)

Answer
You need a lens with a small depth of field, which is for example ( f/1.8 ) or (f/2.8) etc you see when you look at a lens's name. (lower the better)

best bet is the canon 50mm f/1.8, which is extremely good value for money.

however if your worried about the sound of a lens focusing you will need USM, Ultra Sonic Motor, which will make the focusing silent so you wont hear it in the video. Which you will have to pay more for.

Also with most decent lens with shallow depth of field, its fixed focial length which means you cannot zoom. (like the 50mm f/1.8)

Canon Ef 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM vs Tamron SP 70-300MM F/4-5.6 DI VC USD lens?

Chris

PRICE DOES NOT MATTER. I mainly want to figure out which one is better for Video but also some photography.

Pros for the Tarmon lens: internal focusing (so the ring doesn't turn), good focusing, focus ring closer to the camera, included lens hood.

Pros for the Canon lens: Better build Quality, 2 stabilization modes, zoom lock 1 second ago

Answer
The Canon has internal focusing and good focusing. Both of those are traits of the USM motor in the lens. The Tamron also has image stabilization as well, but their system is called Vibration Compensation (VC). Canon is the only manufacturer that use IS; Tamron use VC, Sigma use OS, Nikon use VR etc.

The Canon is the better lens. Tamron make good lenses, but their variable aperture zooms are quite cheap in both construction and performance. If you have the money, own brand will always be better. If you can afford Canon, always buy Canon. Third party lenses are good when you can't afford own brand.

What DSLR camera will these lenses work best with?

I have a Canon EOS Rebel 35mm with a EF 75-300mm Canon Zoom lens and the EF 35-80mm lens, also Canon. I'm currently torn between the Canon EOS Rebel XS and the T1i. There's about $200 price difference between the two, and it would seem as if the differences between them are minimal. But, I've already got two very nice lenses would they work better with one or the other, or a completely different model?

Answer
Any Canon EF mount lens can be used on any Canon DSLR or 35mm auto focus SLR.

The Canon EF-S mount lens CANNOT be used on your 35mm film camera or a Canon full-frame DSLR like the 5D or 1D.

The differences between the Canon XS and T1i are more than minimal. The T1i adds HD Video which accounts for the $200 price difference.

What is a small camera bag that will hold: PD-170 video camera, Canon 20D w/short lens, plus 30-70mm?

thejokker

For military photographer use, lighter and smaller the better. If it can hold a 70-200mm canon zoom lens a possible plus.

Must be able to hold both video and camera bodies.

Answer
Visit tamrac.com or lowepro.com and check out their offerings. Visit shutterbug.com and type "camera backpacks" in the Search box. They reviewed several in the Aug. 2007 issue. You can probably find reviews of regular camera bags there also.

What digital camera do you think is the best?

I need one that doesn't break easily. The last one I had was a pink (I don't like the color pink anymore, btw) polaroid digital camera with 3x optical zoom lens. I had to buy two of these cameras because the first one screwed up and so did the second camera, so do not recommend any polaroid brands.

I want a cheap ($130-$150), awesome camera to buy myself this christmas, so I'd love it if you had one to recommend:).

Thanks for reading!

Answer
Your best bet would be to go with a Canon point-and-shoot. From reviews and experience, Canon point-and-shoot cameras are probably the best of this kind out there. They're compact, cheap, and they usually execute good performance.

For your price range I would go with the Canon Powershot SD1300:

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-Stabilized-2-7-Inch-Silver/dp/B0035FZJKI/ref=sr_1_3?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1291435388&sr=1-3

It has 12.1 megapixels, 4x zoom, image stabilization, and video recording, all in a small easy-to-use camera for around $120.

For any other ideas, just look at the other Canon Powershots. I'm sure they have what you're looking for.

For shooting movies which lens should I buy for my Canon 5d Mark ii?

New

I just bought a Canon 5d mark ii. I will be primarily be using it for shooting movies. Though I can't completely say I won't shoot pictures here and there. But the main reason is a cheap alternative to buying an expensive Digital movie camera. But my question is , First off, should be getting a prime lens or a zoom lens?
Also which range Zoom lens should I be getting If I will be shooting mainly movies ?
Thanks.

Answer
What sort of movies? How big and how close/distant are your subjects?

Sweeping landscapes? African safaris? Movies about birds? People?

P.S. I agree with Dr Iblis..... a camcorder is still the thing to use for video.
