I have a Canon Rebel XT and 2 lenses
1) 18-55mm standard lens
2) 75-300mm telephoto lens III

What would a 2x tele convereter lens do for me?
I do a a lot of landscape shots. Does the quality change?

Answer
A 2x TC will double the range of your 75-300mm to 600mm. This is nice for wildlife and sports photography, but for landscapes you'd generally use a wide angle lens.
Tele converters do degrade image quality and they also require more light. The more powerful the TC, the more pronounced this becomes. So a 2x TC degrades image quality more than a 1.4x TC. And since your 75-300mm zoom is a consumer grade lens to begin with (as is the Canon 70-300mm), stacking a 2x TC on it probably won't win you any photography competitions. Still, it can be a fun item to have in your camera bag.

Which telephoto lens would be best for me?

I have the Canon Rebel XS with the kit lens and I want to buy a telephoto lens.

I need help sorting out all the lingo. For example, what is DG, and whats the difference between f/4.0-5.6 IS and f/4.0-5.6 III? Canon vs Sigma?

I will mostly be shooting people, sports and occasionally landscapes.

Answer
Personally I would stick with a Canon lens over Sigma. Third party lenses are rarely as good as the Canon lenses. Also camera companies design their lenses with future technology in mind. They do not release this information to third party makers . There is a good chance that sometime in the future the third party lenses will no longer work correctly with new cameras.

The lingo means the following.

DG: Is Sigma's designation for digital only lenses. These lenses are designed to be used exclusively on digital cameras with APS-C sized sensors like your Rebel. They will not work on full frame digitals or film cameras.

F4.0-5.6 IS means the lens is a variable aperture lens with image stabilization. The max aperture changes from F4 at the wide end of the zoom to F5.6 when zoom all the way out. On a 70-300mm lens the max aperture will be F4.0 at 70mm and F5.6 at 300mm.

F4.0-5.6 III means that it is a variable aperture zoom and that is the 3rd addition of the lens.

For Canon telephoto zooms I would look at either of these two.

Canon EF 70-300mm F4.0-5.6 IS about $600

Canon EFs 55-250 F4.0-5.6 IS about $250

The 70-300mm III is not really a very good lens. You would be better off spending a few dollars more and getting the 55-250 over this lens.

Which Canon t2i value pack would be more worth my money?

I am planning on buying the new Canon t2i and Best Buy has two separate packages available.
One includes an extra 75-300mm Zoom Lens and the other includes an extra 55-250mm f/4-5.6 Telephoto Zoom Lens. The telephoto lense is a little more money but only by like $100
I was wondering if anyone could tell me the differences between the lenses and which one would be more worth my time, if either.

Thanks!

Answer
I would go w the 75-300mm zoom. I have a Canon Rebel and the 75-300mm Zoom

Factor on the camera is 1.6, so 1.6 times length of your lens gives you the effective length.

18-55 becomes 28 to 88

75-300 becomes 120 to 480

Unless you need a wide angle lens, or a macro lens, you pretty much have it covered.

18-55 general photography and landscapes
75-300 sports, and things you can't (don't want) to get close too.
wide angle - journalism. get the big picture
macro - real closeup work
80- to 105 portraits (use high end of 18-55 (28-88), or low end of 75-300(120-480)

What's the best telephoto lens to buy for a Canon Rebel Xsi?

You can list the best overall lens as well as the best one for the money.

Answer
The best for the money really depends on your budget since you get what you pay for, or what you need it for. A pro sports shoot would probably go for the 400 f/2.8 or 70-200 f/2.8 or both. A bird photographer might go for the 500 f/4 or 400 f/5.6. Someone on a budget might consider the 18-200, 75-300 or 70-300. On average though, the best telephoto for the money seems to be the 70-200 f/4 non IS which goes for around $600. Its an L lens and the cheapest one by a bit. Its very sharp and very well built and has excellent image quality. If I wanted to spend under $1000 for a telephoto lens and didnt need an f/2.8 aperture that lens would be it.
