Is there a macro lens for the Canon Rebel XSi?

Q. Do they make a macro lens not a filer or extension, but a real macro
lens for the 58mm Canon Rebel XSi DSLR camera?

Answer
Hey,

Your Canon XSi has an EF and EF-s mount. The 58mm is the filter size of your current lens (18-55). All lenses have different filter sizes (but most have 58mm), it is written on the front of your lens.

Here's a post called 'Buying a Macro lens for Canon - http://www.the-dslr-photographer.com/2010/02/buying-macro-lens.html

I'd get the Sigma 105, Canon 100mm f/2.8 or the Tamron 90. They're all ~450$.

Here's a review of the Canon 100mmf /2.8 - http://www.the-dslr-photographer.com/2010/03/canon-ef-100mm-f28-macro-usm-review.html

Good luck!

Macro lens suggestions?

Amy Johnso

I've been looking into getting a macro lens for a while now. Any suggestions? I know to get a good macro lens, I have to spend a lot of money, but are there cheaper macro lenses out there that still have a decent quality photo?

Specific lens names so I can search them or even a direct link to an online store/review of the lens would be very helpful.

Thanks!

Answer
I've yet to see a bad macro lens from Nikon, Canon, Tamron, Tokina or Sigma. I like tokina for their price and build quality.

General rule of thumb: 60mm is fine for static objects. For bugs 90mm-ish is about minimum. Don't worry too much about autofocus, it's almost useless in macro anyway.

An o.k. quality Macro Lens for a Canon 40d digital camera?

tranquil_m

What brand of Macro lens would be suggested to get for my Canon 40d digital camera? Would prefer one that would take a clear, non distorted photo but yet not be super super super expensive. --- --- --- ((Not looking for a zoom lens really, already have a 28-135 zoom lens, but I can not stand close enough to the subjects to actually get a good/close macro shot of them with that zoom lens.))

Answer
Your 40D deserves a quality lens and one of THE best Macro lenses available...is the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro. It costs less than $500 US (that's not super super expensive, is it?).
But, it doesn't have "o.k. quality". In fact, it has excellent image quality and sharpness! And, it also make a great portrait lens.

Whats the best general purpose lens for Canon Rebel XT..?

Ashwin Kum

I own a Canon Rebel XT with the default 18-55 kit lens and tamron 70-300 macro lens. i am not satisfied with the performance of both the lens. so looking forward to buy a new one.. can any one tell me which one should i buy... I definetly cannot afford canon L series lens.. so whats the best alternative?
wud perfer 2x -1xx mm range
i wud expect sharper images..

Answer
For your walk around lens, have a look at the Canon 28-135mm ($420) http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=149629&is=USA&addedTroughType=search
and the Canon 17-85mm ($510) http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=351548&is=USA&addedTroughType=search
Both are noticibly better than the 18-55. Depending on what end of the zoom is more important to you, either one should do nicely until you win the lottery and buy that 24-105mm L.

Hung N

I'd like to get one for my canon 350D Xt. Can you tell me one please ?
Monye doesnt matter.
Thanks.

Answer
If I'm not mistaken, the Canon 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro lens is the most highly regarded macro lens in the Canon lineup. I have one, and let me tell you- it IS a great lens! For more information, here are a couple sites that have reviews for this particular macro lens.

Canon 1000D vignetting and review about Tamron AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD MACRO lens.?

king

How can I do vignetting in the 1000d?

and is Tamron AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD MACRO, a good lens to be used with 1000d? If someone have used please let me know the results.

Thanks all in advance

Answer
The Tamron is an adequate budget lens. It is not as good as the Sigma 70-300mm APO, but the Sigma costs more! The cheaper non-APO Sigma is not as good as the Tamron.

The Tamron will start to get soft past 220mm or so. If you got the Sigma APO it will start to get soft after 250mm or so.

You might be better off getting the Canon 55-250mm IS. 250mm is plenty long enough.

@Jens, you can't compare the optical performance of two lenses based on the specifications. Just because you thought the Sigma was crap does NOT make another lens from another manufacturer crap! How on Earth does that makes sense!!!

What is the best portrait lens with the Canon 40d?

Q. I currently have a rebel - think I've finally decided on a 40d body (doesn't seem to be much difference between the 40d & 50d), but now interested in the best portrait lens I can match up with the 40d. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks to all who answered! Looks like I'll be investing in the 50mm 1.4.

Answer
That depends on how much you're planning on spending and what focal length suits your needs. Here are a few fairly inexpensive mid-telephoto prime lenses.

- EF 50mm f/1.8. A very good choice if you're on a budget (only $100).

- EF 50mm f/1.4. Slightly improved version of the lens above. But compared to the more expensive lenses, it's just as sharp but only is a fraction of the price (about $370). You can see the difference between the f/1.8 and f/1.4 versions here: http://photo.net/equipment/canon/ef50/

- EF 85mm f/1.8. Very good quality lens and excellent bokeh. On APS-C cameras, it's a bit long (136mm) but should be okay if you do tight portraits. Also could be a good lens for sports. It costs about $380.

- EF 100mm f/2.8. A tack sharp macro lens and also good for portraits, although it's pretty long on APS-C cameras (160mm). It costs around $520.

Be sure to do plenty of research before deciding on a lens. Here's a good place to read reviews and research: http://the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/
