Which canon camera is good for me?

Sam

Hello,

I just start selling high end diamond and jewelry online and I need to take quality pictures .

I did some research and I found out the canon 100mm L model lens would be perfect.

I love 5 d but it's too expensive for me ..

What canon model will give me good result?

I am thinking canon rebel T5i or 60D with macro 100mm ..

Should I invest and get the 100mm macro L model?

Thanks

Answer
When I wanted a macro lens I found out that Pentax made a 50mm and 100mm. I reasoned since I like flowers and simiarl objects that the 100mm would allow me to shoot with out crawling on my hands and knees. Being age 72, I choose the 100mm, but if I was younger I would have gone for the 50mm macro since it is about half the price of the 100mm macro. Iw ould think you could made a more less permanent set up where the 50mm lens would allow you to use less room. Regarding the camera, beinga life-long Canon user in their film cameras, I made a change based on the comfort of Pentax's veiwfinder and body stabilization, rather than each lens. This enabes me to buy older lenses. In fact My 100macro cost me just below $500 compared to $850 for new!

Which dSLR lens should I get for jewelry closeups?

First, I'm not a savvy SLR user! I'm more of a Fred-Flintstone-Polaroid kind of guy - but I want to learn.

I was given a Canon EOS Rebel 300D with a 18mm-55m lens. I want to take closeups of small items, such as jewelry. What lens should I buy to take closeups of tiny things like jewelry?

Many thanks in advance!

Answer
I agree the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro would be a great lens for shooting jewelry. ($455)

another choice would be the Canon EF 50mm f/2.8 Macro ($260)

If you want to go a less expensive route the Canon Auto Focus Extension Tube 12 II or the Extension Tube 25 II ... you can use them singularly or you can stack them together. They sit between your camera's body and the lens. They fit on EF-S and EF lenses. The tubes change the focal plane of the lens, turning it into a suitable macro lens. You can also use them on dedicated macro lenses, increasing their magnification.

I take a lot of portraits, live band performances, and detailed pictures of the jewelry I make. I also want a camera that will take really clear pictures handheld without the flash. Looking to spend under $2,200.00. Which of these would you recommend or do you have a different recommendation.

Answer
don't think the maker matters... any of the dSLR's (not just the two you mention) will do the job. taking portraits shouldn't be an issue for any camera and lens.

bear in mind you may need a macro lens to take the close ups, lighting can be tricky for close ups.

the one I think may be the problem is going to be the live band performances.. you may need exceptional low light capability, image stabilisation and some good post processing software.

so if I were you Id want to break down the budget to include
the camera body
a macro lens
a standard/mid range lens
possibly a telephoto lens
you may be able to get a macro lens which doubles up as a standard lens
some post processing software such as photoshop.

What is a good camera used for detailed picture taking?

Peace

I am a small business owner and need to take a picture of some of my products to upload to my website (some of these are extremely detailed jewelry pieces). The camera that I am currently borrowing does not take the picture as well as how the product, itself, looks. It makes the image blurry and not the right color. I have tried to change the settings to it and the image still comes out either looking light, faded and washed out or too dark and orange hued. Taking videos of the product was much better but it's still not how I want. What camera would you recommend? I also want a camera for other uses, like taking pictures of models or other things put up for display so if I can get one for both purposes, that would be awesome.

Answer
You can spend a ton of money on some really high end equipment, or you can spend some money and get equipment that is good enough. I vote for the good enough route.

Get a decent camera with a sharp lens. You can either buy a used dSLR (Canon or Nikon, it makes no difference) or a good P&S. Here is a good article on moderate P&S cameras:

Here is one on cheaper options:

Then get a little light tent, lights and tripod kit:

I don't mean macro for like flowers and insects. I need it for detail shots of jewelry, shoes, and decorations of weddings and quinceneras. I have macro filters but when I need an extreme close-up the edges are very blurry and have a zoom-like effect. I dont like how it looks.

Answer
A macro lens would still be your best option for jewelry though shoes and wedding decorations can usually be done with a telephoto lens if you don't have a macro lens. Macro lenses have the ability to focus closely but they don't need to. A 60mm F2.8 macro or a 100mm F2.8 macro lens is also a very good portrait lens and will do shoes and table decorations quite well.
