Canon lens hoods - any way to buy them cheaper than list price?

Q. I have a [Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS lens] & a [Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4.5-5 IS lens]. I need to get hoods for both, but I don't want to pay $40-50 or $20-30, respectively..... any way to get the real deal for cheaper? (I mean, I could use that money for gas...) :P

Answer
You can always check to see if you can find them used at B&H, Adorama, KEH, etc. eBay might be a good place to look. But you probably won't find them much cheaper.

A lens hood is a good investment... I mean if you really need the gas money, cut down on driving. Lens hoods do so much more than blocking glare. If you get the Canon ones, the hard plastic also protects your lens. In fact, I would go as far as to say they are much more effective at protecting your lens than any UV or Protector Filter. That's why I don't recommend the rubber lens hoods. The rubber ones are cheaper and can be effective at reducing glare, but the do nothing for protecting your lens. There have been a couple of times a lens has fallen out of a bag and landed on its front with decent impact. If the lens hood wasn't attached, I probably would be on my third 24-70mm 2.8L instead of my first.

canon lens picking help!?

curious ge

i'm buying a Canon Rebel XS shortly (not a XSi cause the difference is to small for an extra $150 I'd rather use that money to buy a lens) so I am obviously going to buy the camera with the 18-55mm lens cause its basic and simple, but i would kinda like to get another lens. i can't decide though 75-300mm or 55-250mm? its a 100 dollar difference and the 55-250 seems better, i will most likely be using this to get a fewww action shots, like horseback riders jumping or maybe a few soccer shots for school games (i would be close in the stands not super far). now it seems that the 55-250 has a better image stabilization but i still can't decide because sams club has a deal where you can get the canon rebel xs with a 18-55mm and a 75-300mm with a canon rebel gadget bag all for only $750!! but is the 75-300mm really worth it?

I really need a case and the 18-55mm right when i get my camera but i am willing to wait on another lens, so should i get the camera&55 that it comes with and buy a bag all for about 600? and then buy the lens later or what? any opinions on the 300mm and 250mm lens would be awesomeeeee!

Answer
i had heard more about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens which is good one.

*70-300mm telephoto zoom lens with f/4-5.6 maximum aperture for Canon SLR cameras
*3-stop Image Stabilizer for reducing camera shake; ring-type ultra-sonic monitor (USM)
*Electro-magnetic diaphragm (EMD) helps create attractive background at large apertures
*Super Spectra lens coating and lens element shaping suppresses flare and ghosting
*Measures 3 inches in diameter and 5.6 inches long; weighs 22.2 ounces; 1-year warranty

Canon Lens Question?

t _la

I currently have a Canon Digital Rebel XT with:
-The standard 18-55mm lens
-Canon EF 55-200 f/4.5-5.6

Question:
- s it worth it to get BOTH the Canon EF 70-200 f/4 IS USM AND a Quantaray 18-200 f/3.5-6.3 OS lens?
- Should i get one or the other?
- If neither, is there a lens to get for under $1000 that would complement my current set?

I take photos for the school newspaper, sports games, and family functions.

thanks so much
What about as upgrades for the old ones?

Answer
Your current lenses cover virtually the same zoom range as the lenses you are looking at. They really don't complement your existing lenses at all, but are essentially potential replacements. Let's see, the Quantaray lens is $530 and the Canon is $1229. That's a total of $1759, a lot of money.

If I had to choose what lenses to get for you, and presuming you're on a budget of under $1000...
I'd get this one to replace your standard 18-55mm lens:
Tamron SP AF17-50MM F/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical Lens.

Why? For the low light capability and wide aperture. It'll do much better than your current standard lens in that regard.

If you want the 70-200 f/4 IS USM, then I think that's a much better lens than the 55-200 (which I would get rid of and sell) and you should get it if you can afford it.

The only reason to get the Quantaray lens would be if you need a 1 lens solution, where you can only carry one lens and need to cover a lot of focal lengths. Otherwise, it's not as good a choice as getting lenses with more narrow focal lengths and wider apertures.

Lens selection can be tough--you should always evaluate your needs and decide which lenses will accomplish what you want.

Canon t3i lens?????????

Damien

I purchased this camera yesterday and it came with a 18-55mm lens. It cost me 750 dollars. I am thinking of returning it and exchanging it for a canon t3i but the lens will be 55-250 mm for 950 dollars. What's the best deal? I am a amateur @ this. This is my first dslr. What is the difference in the lens? What makes a lens better then others? TY

Answer
Don't waste your time, the shop's time and your money.
Just buy the Canon EF-S 55-250 f/4-5.6 IS that you will find for under $200

eg
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-55-250mm-4-5-6-Stabilizer-Telephoto/dp/B000V9D5LG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1343117404&sr=8-2&keywords=canon+55-250

That way you have a T3i with both lenses for $920.
BTW the 55-250 is a great lens but is way too long for many purposes. I have this lens and it is used for maybe 10-15% of my shots.

What lenses are good for the samsung nx1000 to take blurry background photos?

best canon lens for the money on Canon, Nikon, Sigma, and Tamron 24-70mm Lens Shootout: What's the Best ...

I'm new to photography and just recently purchased a samsung nx1000. It comes with a 20-50mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. I've been wanting to take pictures of people where the background is blurred while the subject is in clear focus. I did a little research and people have told me that to obtain a blurred background, a low aperture range is ideal? My lens only goes to 3.5 so I've been looking for more accessories to test out. Aside from the Samsung lenses, what other lenses is compatible (with converter)? I've bought an canon eos lens converter but don't know which canon lenses will work with the nx. Sorry for the longwinded explanation! But your opinion is much appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
First, try to get your money back on the "converter" you bought. Actually, its properly known as an adapter and while it will allow you to use a Canon EF mount lens on your Samsung NX lens mount camera body you'll have no auto focus and only limited metering options.

Second, go here and learn about Depth of Field (DOF):
http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/depth-of-field.htm

DOF is defined as that area in front of and behind your subject that is in focus.

There are 3 factors that affect your DOF:

1) The focal length of the lens.
2) The aperture used.
3) The subject distance.

You can use the DOF Calculator at this site - http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html - to compute your DOF for any combination of the 3 factors imaginable. Here are a couple of examples:

50mm @ f5.6 focused on a subject at 5'-0'' DOF will be from 4'-8'' to 5'-5''. This means that anything from 0'-4'' in front of your subject (4'-8'' in front of your camera) to anything 0'-5'' behind your subject (5'-5'' in front of your camera) will be in focus. That is a reasonably shallow DOF.

50mm @ f16 focused on a subject at 5'-0'' DOF will be from 4'-3'' to 6'-2''. This means that anything from 0'-9'' in front of your subject (4'-3'' in front of your camera) to anything 1'-2'' behind your subject (6'-2'' in front of your camera) will be in focus.

In either example the background will be nicely out of focus as long as its a couple of feet behind your subject. You really don't need additional lenses although in my opinion the Samsung 60mm f2.8 Macro ED OIS SSA would be worth having.

So get your money back on that adapter and learn about DOF.

What is the best canon lens for Dirt Track racing?

Tegtmeier5

I have a 60D canon camera and a 18-135mm lens. I am stuck sitting in the bleachers since I don't have close up access. I have to take photos from either the corners or on the opposite side of the track because there is a fence between the bleachers and the track(of course. I didn't need to mention that but did anyway). I would like to be able to get close up shots and still have good quality. What lens would work best for this

The only thing that is keeping me from a really good lens is the price. I don't have a lot of money.

Also I want to blur out the background and keep the cars in the shot in focus. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to set the camera at? (ISO, shutter speed, and F-stop) I know it depends on the light, how fast the cars are going and other things, but I would like some ideas.

The hot laps start at 6:00pm and the races start about 6:30.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Answer
First of all, you just need to make sure that your shuter speed isset to at least 1/500th second. You will have to adjust your lens aperture and ISO to assure that..

As the sun goes down, you will need to set your white balance to match the lighting on the track.

I shoot a lot of motocross and use an 18-200 mm lens, but I am on the course. When I shoot from the sidelines, I use a 300 mm lens.

The best Canon that is not going to cost you over $6,000 is the EF 70-300 mm lens
