How good is the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 Lens for landscape photography?

Samuel Ng

Answer
It can be used to shoot landscapes - but the field of view will be fairly narrow & you wouldn't shoot it wide open in any case - you'd stop it down for greater depth of field. Given those two constraints, its a perfectly capable lens for landscapes, in fact in terms of sharpness, it's great.

However, most people tend to use a wider angle lens (10-20mm or thereabouts), as this tends to give more drama to a landscape, but you don't have to.
Some beautiful landscape shots have been taken with telephoto lenses, where you may want to concentrate on one small element in the scene.

Canon EOS 40D owner looking for best lens for wide/landscape shots?

Claudia T

Not a professional photographer but I have a great camera and am stationed in Europe. Im looking for the best lens for my EOS that will capture some of the amazing landscapes out here. Cant spend a huge amount of money though, under 700 dollars is as far as I can go. Suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer
Take a look at the Canon EF-S 10-22mm ultra-wide zoom. Around $700.00 USD.

The Tamron SP AF10-24mm Di II Aspherical would also be a good choice. Around $475.00 USD.

For the very best landscapes, always use a tripod. My set-up is a 21mm lens at f16 and focused to 6' which yields a depth of field from 2'-2" to infinity. Camera perfectly level on a 3-way tilt/pan head on my ancient Slik tripod. I always shoot in Aperture Priority and let the camera worry about the shutter speed. I use a cable release or the camera's self-timer to release the shutter.

To calculate Depth of Field with any combination of lens focal length, f-stop and subject distance just go to http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html

What kind of Canon camera lens should I buy?

best canon lens for landscape image

I have been researching camera lenses but I do not know which one to buy. I have a Canon T2I, but I want a lens that is good for low-lighting, action shots, landscapes, and zooming. My budget is $500. Please let me know what I should buy and why. Thanks!

Answer
With your budget of $500.00 your best choice is the Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM which is perfect for low-light use. About $400.00 depending on where you shop. Since its a prime lens (no zoom) you'll have to learn to "zoom" like we did before there were zoom lenses - walk closer to get less of a scene, walk backwards to get more of a scene.

The 18mm end of your 18-55mm zoom is fine for landscapes.

For action/sports you'll need to save more and buy the EF 70-200mm f4L IS USM zoom which is about $1,350.00 depending on where you shop.

Can someone recommend a good lens for landscape photography?

:)

I recently bought a Canon 7D (love it) and have been using a 50mm 1.4, and I need a good lens for landscape (oceans, mountains, cities, etc)

My budget is no more than $700, please help

Answer
The Canon 10-22 is a great wide lens, as others have suggested.

I would also suggest a long lens like the Canon 200mm f/2.8 $750. You can produce some very interesting landscape images using long lenses. You can either compress a scene like this:

Or you can use a long lens to take several images to stitch into a pano like this:

All of those images were made using a 200mm lens.

What is the absolute best Canon lens for landscape photography?

best canon lens for landscape on Review of the Sigma 300-800mm f5.6 zoom lens

Own a Canon 5D Mark III with a 24-105. Really looking to dive into landscape photography seeing as how when I had the 40D with the 17-55, loved it.

Given that, without budget restraints, what is the best Canon L series lens out there for landscape photography? I intend on using ND and Polarizing filters as well for some of my shots.

Thanks in advance.

Answer
On that camera
Zoom - Canon EF 16-35mm F/2.8 L
Prime - Canon EF 20mm f/2.8 L or 24mm f/1.4 L

That said, your 24-105 on the full frame 5D includes the full focal length range of your 17-55 on the crop sensor 40D which would be equivalent to a 27-88 on full frame.

What lens u ll suggest for a travel photography?

1)i like to buy 70-200mm f/ 4l is usm lens,is it gud enough or will sugest sum other lens for the same price category?

2)how to find the orginal canon lens? becoz here lot of shops provide various price ranges for the lens which i mentioned.
Thanks 4 ur suggestions in advance.

Answer
@Camera guy-it looks as if English may be a second language for the OP, but I'm not sure.

As far as a lens, it really depends on where you're going and what you'll be doing. If you will mostly do scenic shots, landscapes, cityscapes, then I recommend a wide angle lens like a 10-22mm or 12-24mm. It will make for much more dynamic shots.

But if you will be doing mostly street style photography, cafes, people, markets, then something like a 35mm or 50mm might be more appropriate.

Or, if you will be shooting a lot of wildlife, then you are going to want at least a 200mm focal length, so perhaps the 70-200. But it might still leave you wanting a little more reach.

I'm in need of a wide angle lens. I plan on using it for ALOT of HDR landscapes. Is paying an extra $250 worth a 10-22mm ???
BTW, I only use Sigma and Canon lens =D
I have a Canon EOS 40D

Answer
Good points.

Another thing to consider is value. If you must buy your own equipment, remember that the lenses you get will probably be worth keeping for years, and have an opportunity to retain their value. Camera bodies however, get better every day, and your shiny new camera today will be long gone into antiquity tomorrow.

Speding a little more on good lenses is smart because they will serve you for a while, and pay you back some when you eventually sell. Because of this, the Canon lens will probably be cheaper in the long run, and is likely a better lens anyway.

Good luck.

What lens should I buy for my canon DSLR camera?

I only have the canon 18-55mm lens that came with the camera but I want to get another one. What size in mm would you recommend?

Answer
The correct answer depends on the type of photography you want to do. Are you planing on doing Macro, Portrait, Landscape, Sports ... thing about this and it will point out to the best lens available for what you see yourself shooting in the future.

Hey,

You have 3 excellent options; Tamron, Sigma and Tokina.

Here's a post called 'Buying a WideAngle Lens for Canon - http://www.the-dslr-photographer.com/2010/02/buying-wideangle-lens.html

The canon one rocks but price is a bit higher, ideed.

The site has many tutorials, tips, reviews and guides, good luck!

What kind of lens should i buy for landscapes?

DEES

i have a canon 550d and 18-135mm lens. I want to buy a lens that is best for landscapes. sigma, tamron, canon lenses only. lens that are sharp and not heavy enough to carry

Answer
Only YOU will know what is the best lens for you. When I am undecided on glass, I rent various lenses from a camera shop for a weekend.

For Landscape, I (as in IMO) would choose from the Canon lenses:

14mm f/2.8L
20mm f/2.8
16-35mm f/2.8L
17-40mm f/4L

I don't buy 3rd party anymore after bad experiences with Tamron.
