Canon Rebel Xti Kit Lens Replacement?

Anna M

Hey all,
I have a Canon Xti and I've recently been on the market looking for an upgrade for the original kit lens. Came across the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Would this be a good replacement for the kit lens?
Or if not, any other suggestions?
I'm a photography student, so I wouldn't call myself a professional by all means.
And as a student you could probably guess that I'm on a very tight budget.
I'm very interested in street photography and photojournalism, if that helps distinguish a lens.
Any input will be very much appreciated.
Thanks!

Answer
the EF 50mm f/1.8 II should serve you well for the purposes you mention especially if you are good at manually zooming (moving yourself and the camera alot)

consult your teacher also

Need a recommendation on a good quality kit lens replacement?

Joshua

So i am buying a Canon t3i this week, but i would really like a good kit lens replacement. with the camera i will be mostly taking pictures of my kids, both when they're playing and for portraits. I will also be using the camera to take pictures of product for web sites and doing product video and article reviews as well as tutorial guides. i will be taking up-close and kids playing indoors the most. i will not be taking very many far-away pictures or videos. I am a beginner and would like some guidance/recommendations on lenses. i would like to stay under 1000 USD for the lenses only. thanks in advance.

Answer
The kit lens is more useful than you, or, it seems, people on here seem to think, give it enough light and it will perform well.

It's only when you want to take pictures in low light that the aperture limitation will start to show and be a problem.

A lens of similar focal lengths(s), but a wider aperture is a good place to start. The Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 is a good lens, but not so good for landscapes especially on an APS sized sensor, you may want wider, which is where the kit lens comes in. When bought with a camera the kit lens will be the cheapest most useful general purpose lens you will ever buy.

Practice with that first and see which direction your going in, Macro, Telephoto, wider aperture. Buy lenses, and any other gear for that matter, for a definite reason not just because a 'professional' on YA said that's the lens you need (and that includes me). Everybody works differently. When you find yourself saying, I wish I could get closer (Macro Lens), or I wish I could reach further (Telephoto Lens), or I wish I had less noise in these low light shots (Wider Aperture Lenses), that's the time to buy the lens. But then you know why you need the lens and you won't have to ask anybody, you've identified YOUR need.

What kind of lens should i get if i am interested in buying a Canon Digital Rebel XTi?

a_eberhard

I'm interested in buying a nice, easy to use camera. I've done a little research and the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi seems to be my best bet. I'm a beginner at photography,so I'm kind of confused on the proper lens to buy. I don't really need a lens with like 50X zoom. Just looking for a standard beginners lens for a good price. Can anyone help?

Answer
the kit lens 18-55mm is cheap - but it has bad reviews.

you could go for the stabilised 17-85mm zoom, but that's a bit more expensive. But at least you'll have as much zoom as a compact!

if you're a beginner, and assuming you don't have an infinite budget, I don't think you can go for any lenses of the "L" family - these are very expensive, professional grade lenses from Canon, and they will cost a good deal more than the Digital Rebel XTi itself!

Final note: the Digital Rebel XTi is at the end of its life. To judge by replacement cycle, it seems VERY likely that Canon will announce a replacement next Jan at a big show, or at the latest in Feb. This will likely have 12mp (vs. 10mp), and will also offer "live view" (ie you'll be able to compose shots on the screen like on a compact, which can be useful in quite a few situations). So if you must buy an XTi today, make sure you get a DEEP discount.

Alternatively, you could try to look for older possibly higher-end models, where the successor is already out (rather than still to be announced). For example, these days, the semi-pro 10mp Nikon D80, w the kit lens 18-70mm, will go for say 1'200 dollars, which is comparable to what you'd pay for a Canon XTi w the sabilised 17-85mm lens. And the D80 is a much superior camera in many respects.

Hope this helps

Is the Pentax K2000 a good camera to buy?

I already have a digital camera a Canon Powershot A590 but it lacks the ability to change lenses. I'm looking to upgrade to a DSLR camera and i ran across this camera Pentax K2000. Is this a good camera to buy or is there something better i can buy?

Answer
Buy the newer K-x, it's a replacement for the K2000. The K-x is 650 with kit lens and comes in either white, red, blue, or black. It also has HD video recording, live view, 4.7 FPS, 11 AF points, and up to 12,800 ISO, which is a HUGE improvement over the K2000 and is WELL WORTH the extra pricing over the K2000. I would never get the K2000 with this differential in pricing, I would save up the extra money and get the K-x over it instead. The new K-x has iso levels exceeding the Nikon D300s and D90 which are flagships in APS-C noise levels, with 650 USD you can get better iso noise levels. This camera is a no-brainer and must-have for anybody who knows the technological side of DSLR's and wants to get into the entry-level league. This 12,800 shot below took my breath away, there is no APS-C sensor that will take images at 12,800 with more clarity than the K-x. http://www.lismore.net/images/kx/20091024-IMGP0445.jpg

How much does the Rebel XTi cost?

Alexis

By tomorrow, I will have saved up $430. I've been looking to buy the Canon Rebel XTi, but I have not been able to see a decent price. The cost isn't a worry to me as much as the different prices I see. One website will say 500, and the other says 900! How much does this product really cost and where is the best place to buy the Canon Rebel XTi KIT!

Answer
First off buy from a reputable dealer. There are more scam camera sites than there are porn sites on the internet.

Part of the difference in price could be what lenses are included with the camera. Also be careful of all the places that load you up with accessories. 90% of them are useless pieces of junk that you absolutely don't want.

The XTi has been discontinued for a while now. You wont find many new ones. If you don't mind used you should be able to get one with the 18-55mm lens for about $350.
If you can find a new one it should be $500 or less.

Personally I think you would be better off just getting a new Rebel XS for $500 with a 18-55mm lens. I think the XTi is a slightly better camera but they have not made it in over a year. The XSi was its replacement or upgrade.
