Canon Rebel with better glass vs. 30D with standard lens?

I recently won a scholarship and am considering bumping up some of my camera equipment. So far, I have this:

30D
28-104 f/3.5-4.5 USM
50mm f/1.8
70-300 f/4-5.6 (non-USM non-IS version)

I can spend about $1,000. So I'm considering either:

Selling what I have and getting a rebel with the Canon 17-55 f/2.8, the 75-300 IS USM, and a 50mm f/1.4.

Or, I can keep my current setup and just add the 17-55.

Any advice?

Very interesting question!

I guess you are pretty camera savvy, and you will have researched the upgrade benefits of the XTi, and know the Canon US MTF curves for your lenses.

My question to you is "why do you want to change anything?"

Have you done some tests on focus, large aperture lens performance, high ISO and long exposure noise with your existing kit? If not - why not? The 28-104 (28-105?) f/3.5-4.5 USM is reckoned by some to be soft, so you might want to reconside that one as a walk around lens.

You should then be able to find the weak point(s) in your system.

Why do all your lenses overlap? You could get a decent wide angle prime to cover the c20mm range and a 100-300 for reach. You have a lot of duplicate kit here in your current system and it probably needs a rethink, based on what you want to shoot

The few extra pixels in the XTi are mostly irrelevant unless you want to print A2 and more, both bodies are Digic II - also irrelevant if you shoot RAW.

I can highly recommend the 50 f/1.4 lens, great value and solid performance.

You have a problem, and $1,000 to spend - not such a bad situation!

i personally prefer Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II Lens which helps you. it is really good.

Canon 30d?

I was originally going for a 40d body ($1200-body only! ouchies). Then I thought nikon d80. ($800-900 body only) THEN I thought XTI. It's a lot cheaper and good for beginners. But now I think a 30d might be a good idea. It's been on the market for a few years thus, former beginners are wanting to upgrade and sell.

Anyway, I heard that when you're not a super pro photographer, megapixels only mean so much. (30d has 8mp vs the usual 10-12+mp of entry level dslrs). I figure I'd try to get a less new camera so I can get a good lens or two or three. I've read the xti vs 30d vs 40d vs etc etc stuff so I'm pretty comfortable with the knowledge I have.

The going used price is $600ish via craigslist/good winning bid on ebay.

The going refurbished/open box/etc camera is about $700 or so.

So do you think it's a good idea to buy a 30d at about those prices? Or maybe you know of where I can get a better deal.

OR, if you have any suggestions at all or comments/wisdom, that's cool 2
I mean, just because it's old and not being made any more doesnt mean it's not good. Right? That's what I've been told anyway.

hey, that is the link to the canon eos 30d, they have " new " ones there, they aren't used or refurbished.

i would say that the canon eos 30d is a good camera, it has 8 megapixels which is good, it has a big screen which is convinient for displaying your work, it looks and feels more pro, that the canon xti. i would say that the 30d, has much more features, and would be better in the long term

when you buy something off of ebay, be careful some of that crap they sell is so cheap because smtn is wrong with it lol, but i wouldn't say that in all cases though.

This is a very difficult question to answer. First you need to determine if you would like a zoom or a few prime lenses.

If you have the kit zoom, you may want some primes for portrait work. For portraits and tighter shots the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM or EF 85mm f/1.8 USM are pretty fantastic. If you need something a bit wider, the dinky EF 35mm f/2.0 is pretty nice, but still cheap. If you look around, you can probably buy the 35mm and one of the others for close to your budgeted amount. Of course, buying used is cheaper.

The $85 Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II is an excellent bargain, but the out-of-focus areas (bokeh) and the build quality might not be as nice. This was my favorite lens for a while, unexpectedly sharp.

If you absolutely need a zoom for convenience, then something with a constant wide aperture (2.8) would be ideal. Canon's excellent EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM is way over budget, but the alternative Tamron and Sigma are worth a look (and can often be found for under 650). Out of those two, I would lean toward the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II. You can see some sample images here:

The EF-S 18-200mm IS (which I often use with my 40D when I travel) is a very convenient lens, but the smaller aperture may make it difficult to use for indoor photography. IS (Image Stabilization) helps in some situations, but won't do any good for people and portraiture as your subjects are going to be moving around.

when thinking about lens you should not think in terms of cheep. instead you need to think that a lens is like your eyeball and you want the best viewing instrument that you can have optically. while there are some good optic quaility lens out there. there is so much more optical quality to be had.

so my advice, decide what you want to shoot; what lens are there that are best suited for shooting that type of photography and then save up. dont buy a lens just to have it until you can replace it for a better quality lens. instead think that camera bodies come and go with technology (that 30d will be obsolete in 4 yrs), but your lens will be as sharp and chrisp as there were the day you bought them. ask the professional photographers that bought the D30 and then the D60 then the 10D,20D,5D, 1D,1Ds,1D mark II, IDs mark II. they used the same lens (probably Canon L glass) on all those camera's. just like you will probably use whatever lens you choose on the next body and the next body long after the 30D

you just spent $1,500 on a camera dont put a cheep "eyeball" on the front and handicap your camera. if you didnt want to spend a lot of money then why did you spend $1,500 on a body? and if $1,500 is not a lot of money, then there are a lot of Canon L glass that you can buy in the $1,500 range.

and there is no such thing as a deal in ebay for photographic equipment. if you think you are getting a deal you are more than likely getting ripped off one way or another. just about every piece of photography equipment on ebay is selling for 90% or better the list price. just buy it new in the box from a reputable store with the warranty and everything intact.

as to what lens is what. see both of those sites below for reviews and forums of lens for your camera

PS: FYI i have a canon 20d with assortment of lens and have learned the lens swap game doesnt pay off.

Depends on how much the 30D has been used. Brand new, no shutter actuations (0 pictures taken), it's worth maybe $1,000 with the kit lens. If you're looking to sell it online, you need have an estimate of how many pictures have been taken with it, because people won't buy a camera sight unseen if they don't know how far along it is in terms of shutter life.

The two Sigma lenses aren't worth much, $130 for the 28-70 and maybe $140 for the 70-300 if they're brand new and in pristine condition. Hard case, I don't know what kind/brand it is, but you probably won't get much unless it's a higher end case like a Pelican. You might have to just throw it in as a part of the deal.

Overall, brand spanking new, maybe $1,300, but I would expect less. The 40D was just released, so the market is being flooded with 30D bodies people are trying to offload, so I would say maybe expect in the neighborhood of $900-$1000, maybe $1100 tops.

I've read some things about the Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens, but does anyone know if this lens is good or not?

Or should I just get a lens kit that comes with the Canon EOS 30D camera?

Depends on your budget- I have both lenses and the kit lens is ok and certainly handy for wide angle shoots. The second lens is quite a bit more expensive but would be useful from wide to a nice portrait focal length. Its major advantage is that it has image stabilization and is good for lower light situations without flash. I was able to hand hold it maybe 3 stops slower without obvious signs of camera shake induced blur. It retails for about $500 or less. There is a new, faster lens in the same or approximately same zoom range that has a 2.8 constant aperture, but here we are talking approx. $1000.
