which camera lens should i bring for travelling?

tidy mess

i just got a sony nex-3 with a wide angle lens and a normal lens that has zoom. i'm going on vacation to tokyo tomorrow and i can't decide which lens to bring with me! i'm trying to pack lightly, so i definitely don't have room for both.

the wide angle lens is great because it's much smaller than the other lens and i love the wide angle pictures.

the regular lens with zoom takes better pictures than the wide angle because it has a built in image stabilization, and its nice to be able to zoom (whereas everything looks so far away with the wide angle lens). but the lens is really a lot bigger than the wide angle lens, which makes it harder to take with me in my day bag and makes me more nervous about breaking it.

any advice? i'm tempted to take the regular zoom lens because it takes better pictures. but i'm extremely hesitant because its large size will make me less mobile.

thanks!

Answer
Take the wide angle lens. You can always crop the shots if you want to emphasize detail. Wide angle lenses are easier to focus and if you know how to use depth of field, you can do away with focusing by just leaving the focus to manual with a certain aperture. You can make up zoom by walking nearer to your subject but it is harder to go wide specially in cramp spaces like in Japan. You'll love the wide angle. It'll give you more elements in your shots.

What camera lens is ideal for travel?

nora_l_rin

And not too epensive

Answer
It depends on:
1. Where are you going?
2. What do you want to photograph?

A good walk around lens is 18-55 on a crop body and 24-70 on a full frame for just everyday shooting. If you're doing portraits you'll focus on something longer. If you're doing landscapes you'll focus on something wider.

What camera lens are needed for travel photography?

Chad S

Answer
It depends on exactly what you want to shoot.
But I agree with the guy above me, you need a nice versatile lens. You do not want to be standing in the middle of a crowded street in a foreign country, trying to change lenses. Your subject will be gone, or you are going to drop or damage a lens.
Something like an 18-200mm lens would be great, but pack a few spare one, perhaps a nice 10-24mm and a standard 50-74mm as well.
As for what brand, either the offical lens brand for your camera (Nikon, pentax, canon etc) or tamron, tokina or sigma. Any of the major brands.

The last thing is you need a tough lens. When you are on holiday, you are most likely going to busy watching the scenery rather than looking after your camera. These days you can buy nice tough, and even weather resistant lenses. Spend a bit of extra money and get a dust and splash resistant lens made of nice tough metal/plastic.
Oh, and a lens hood and UV filter are a must, especially if you are going somewhere dusty or sandy.

hope that helps

What is a good camera lens for landscape/travel?

Julia Henr

I'm going to Italy in a month and I was hoping to buy a new lens for my trip. Any suggestions?
I have a low budget, must be under $500. I'd prefer it to be around $300.
Oh and I have a Nikon d90, if that helps any.

Answer
The 18-105 mm lens is sufficient for what you want to do.

Most travel photos are shot using a wide angle lens, like the Nikkor 10-24 mm lens

If you have visited the Nikon website, you will notice that your $300-$500 budget is a little short. You need to save more pennies.

http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Camera-Lenses/index.page

You will notice, there are very few lenses (other than maybe three or four) that actually fall in that range. None of them are wide angle zoom lenses

The 10-24 mm wide angle lens would be especially helpful shooting in ancient towns and cities like Venice, Udine, Padova, Trieste and others

Can I travel with my camera lens on my carry-on bag w no problem?

Mark

I recently purchased a nikon DSLR camera and some lens that are very, very expensive.

I have a trip coming up on Dec. And obviously I'm very nervous putting them inside my check-in luggage because some TSA or whoever might go & steal it.

I can put them inside my carry-on bag with no troubles going thru the security check points, right?

thanks!!!!!!!

Answer
Cameras are not a weapon and are not dangerous. The TSA people _will not care_ that you have a camera in your bag. No one will.

Never put anything valuable in checked in luggage.

Just leave it all in your carry on bag when you send everything through the x-ray machine. You do not have to tell them you have a camera. I have traveled many times with a digital camera and nobody has every said anything or asked about it. Really. it is just another electronic device, and most passengers on planes these days have several pieces of electronics.

Going through the x-ray machine will have absolutely no effect on the camera or the memory card.

Will a solar eclipse hurt my Rezound camera?

best camera lens to travel with on ... DMC-FZ50 digital camera - Reviews - Cameras & Videos - Gadgets
best camera lens to travel with image

Nic

The Solar Eclipse will be traveling through where I live. I am going to look up ways to view eclipses, but also wanted a direct recording of it. There is no view finder, as the camera is digitally viewed on the screen, so I'm not worried about my eyes. But I don't want to ruin my camera lens either.

Answer
Pointing any digital camera at the Sun, eclipsed or not, will permanently damage the camera's sensor, exactly as looking at it will lead to a blind spot on your eye. Also the image on any standard camera will be too small to show any detail.

What does it mean when you dream of secret service and false advertisement?

Eva

So I recently had this strange dream I can't quite understand. I was walking through the mall and first encountered these two young happy black women, they must've been best friends having a nice day (I think they were just a part of the scenery, nothing significant though I could be wrong). I walk past them and around the end of the mall there is this guy who looks kinda like Obama and he's surrounded by a few men in black. The Obama look a like and his men said they were an add campaign of sorts and were taking pictures of random young people for their magazine. I thought why not, this could be fun. At first he took an ordinary portrait shot of where I was standing and then he said we need to take a second picture of your smile. So this must have been an advertisment for some dental product I thought. (So I didn't know what advert I was getting into in the first place?) ...He put the camera lens right up on my lips and I felt myself leaning over backwards. Obama guy pressed the flash button and I felt this egg shaped ball of energy travel down the left side of my mouth, throat, and into the lower left side of my guy. As I felt that thing sit there my body started going numb in different places, I was being knocked out or drugged. When I passed out I woke up.
It's said people in your dreams represent characteristics of yourself. Some say you should have other people interpret your dreams to get a broad perspective / critique. Maybe this is one of those crazy prophesy dreams. Maybe this Obama KO represents a part of me that lies to itself, I think false advertisement's a key word here. Or maybe this was something stranger like the men in black actually entered my dreams. Any responses?
...I'm really worried if someone actually entered my dreams.

Answer
Secret service and false advertising could be complex symbols from your subconscious mind that indicate people are being manipulative and deceptive towards you - perhaps they are being two faced or pretending to be one way to you but really being something else to others .

Can I not bring my camera bag together and just put my dslr in a normal bag?

The temperature of the place im travelling to is about 10 degree celcius.

Will the cold temperature damage the camera lens or stg like that?

Im not a pro so I only have a dslr with one lens attached. I dont have any more extra lenses.

Thank you.

Answer
10 deg C isn't cold and won't cause any camera problems. In fact cooler temperatures are better for the sensor, or the image quality because it makes the sensor less noisy. Hot days make things worse in that respect.

You get most problems going from hot and humid to cold or cold to hot and humid as the camera can fog up up internally. If the temperature is reasonably constant there are generally few problems. Very cold (below zero) shortens battery life.

How do I carry my digital camera and equipment on the plane?

yuchi1

Traveling and will take camera, lens, batteries, charger and extra batteries, how do I know the regulations on these items and I want to have them as carryon, In the U.S

Answer
travelling from canada to the states was fine bringing a digital camera in carryon on the plane. they just ask you not to turn it on when taking off and landing, same goes for laptops and cell phones. Just show the customs ppl who check you becuase it is metal. I think you are only llowed to carry on batteries that are in a device, so dont carry on an extra pack of them. If your still unsure about it, id say call the airport just in case. worst comes to worst, just throw it in your suitcase at the airport.
