Camera doesn't have IS nor does lens (landscape photography)?

Q. The Canon 5D Mark II does not have IS nor does the Canon 17-40MM L Lens (the first two pieces of equipment I plan on buying for photography). Would a remote shutter and tripod be good enough? Would wind be to much for the camera?
I plan on getting a Manfrotto (055xprob) with a ball head for about 300 USD. Surely this will be good for now?

I have already added all the gear up and it till be close to 5,000 so I will have to stick with the 17-40mm lens for now.

Answer
A remote shutter release and tripod is the best, VR, IS or not.

We have been shooting landscape photography for over one hundred years ... no image stabilization.

If all you are shooting is landscapes, I would recommend the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM. The silly little mm difference can sometimes make a difference and of course it is a stop faster

What is the best lens for landscape photography with the Nikon D 5200?

LEO

I am looking for an affordable lens for the Nikon d5200 that works great for landscape and city photography. Also, i am interested in night sky shooting any reccomandations for how to get some great results

Answer
On your DX camera- the Nikkor 10-24mm is a superb landscape lens for around $1200 dollars. Not that cheap, but an excellent lens for your needs (effectively 15-36mm). City photography means a lot of different thniings- carry around lenses with large zoom ranges are often popular due tot heir versatility but thye often do have to make compromises on quality at the extremes. The 18-200mm and 18-30omm lenses are both great walk around lenses but niether is cheap. Tokina does an 18-270mm lens which is cheaper. Alternatively look at the 18-105mm lens from Nikkor that comes as a kit lens on some of their cameras

For night sky shooting:
Use a tripod and remote release.
Put you camera in mirror up mode
Use small apertures and long exposure times
Try to do it in an area with very low incidental light so as to not have light from the sides overexposing the picture

What are the best canon lenses for portrait and landscape photography?

I have a canon digital rebel xt that i received as a Christmas present. I'd like to take professional looking portraits of my baby and family, whats the best lens for this? I'd also like to buy a good lens for landscape photography. Any suggestions?

Answer
If you understand the fundamentals of photography you will know the lens that best fits your needs. The fundamentals are not really rocket science, to really really use an SLR/DSLR like the XT you need to know how to get the max out of it.

For example: If by landscape you mean like a sunset or a sort of mountain/lake scenery you will need a deep depth of field (DOF) and you need to know what DOF means and how you can very easily change that on your XT (you do this by changing the aperture of your lens in the the Aperture Priority (Av) or Manual mode (M) mode). Similarly for babies you want a shallow DOF and you do this since the baby is the focus of your pic and you want the background blurred.

But by changing the aperture you also mess with the amount of light thats entering the camera and that affects the shutter speed etc.

Its not that hard, once you understand the fundamentals you will know EXACTLY what kind of lens you need. For starter I suggest:

1) Get a good photography teacher or a good easy to read photography book. I recommend "Understanding Exposure" it has lots of pics that explains what the terms means visually. IMO its the BEST $15 you will ever spend in your photography hobby. You will understanding what makes up an Exposure-Aperture, Shutter and ISO.

2) Once you know that, when you read your Camera manual it will make a lot of sense.

3) For beginner portraits the best lens is the $75 EF 50mm f/1.8. This is a prime lens (it does not zoom you zoom in and out with your feet) and it a fast lens (any lens with an aperture more than f/2.8 is called fast, since it usually yields fast shutter speeds) and bigger the aperture f/1.4, f/1.8, f/2.0, f/2.8 even f/4 the shallower the DOF and the more blurred the background is.

Note: In photography f/2.8 is smaller than f/2, which is smaller than f/1.8. This is because it is a ratio, so f/1.8 is large coz it lets in MORE light than say f/2.8. It's confusing now but will make a lot of sense once you get the fundamentals.

I am assuming your camera came with a EF-S 18-55mm kit lens. This is a moderately Wide Angle Zoom lens and its really good for landscapes and close people shots. If you do 1-3 as listed above you will figure out what your favorite focal length is for shooting and what you really need.

I could easily tell you to get a $640 EF-S 10-22 mm lens for wide angle landscapes or a $300 EF 50mm f/1.4 for portraits but you need to know WHY they cost that much and how to use them first to justify the cost. There is a reason why good lens cost a LOT of money and you need to understand photography to understand their cost and how to get the most from them.

What kind of camera would be good for landscape photography?

Exile

I am interested in getting into some landscape photography. However I know nothing about it, cameras, or photography in general. So I need some help finding a camera that will let me get into this.

I am trying to avoid breaking 250 dollars, so that would be my upper limit, and I would really like to be able to switch out the lenses also if that is possible.

Any tips on this hobby would also be great.

Thanks for helping

Answer
You will need a camera with a wide angle lens.

The cameras that can use interchangeable lenses cost about $700 at the entry level, plus the cost of a good lens like the 10-24 mm wide angle zoom

For $250 you will have to buy a P&S camera which has a good wide angle focal length at the wide end of the optical zoom,.

Look here for such cameras.

What's the best interchangeable lens camera for my budget?

best camera lens landscape photography on 500px / Sunset Waves Kiss The Rocks by Stewart Baird
best camera lens landscape photography image

Alex

I want to buy an interchangeable lens camera: Mirrorless or DSLR. I have a budget of $350 or a little more. (I don't feel like paying 400+ dollars for a camera (body only). I've been looking at the Panasonic G3. I can get it body only on Amazon for $290 - the perfect price for me right now. But there doesn't seem to be too many lenses available for this camera. I would like to get a Canon or Nikon, but they seem to be too expensive. I'm not too picky, I just want to do some landscape photography.

I just don't know. Should I save up some more or buy one with the $350 I have?

Answer
Hi Alex - you may have to spend a little more to get started with a good quality interchangeable lens camera - but not much more.

The G3 deal for $290 is a good one (as of the time of this post, it just got better at 250!).
Have you thought about a used lens? You can get the G3's kit lens, the Panasonic 14-42 for $99 from eBay and stay within your $350 budget. The G3 can produce images like these: http://www.flickr.com/groups/panasonicg3/pool/

If you're able to spend $50 more, here is a Sony A35 deal with the 18-55 kit lens included at Sears online for $399.99 (free shipping). The Sony has a larger sensor than the G3, focuses very quickly, is a great camera for the price, and can produce images like these: http://www.flickr.com/groups/1838147@N21/pool/

If you want a reflex mirror DSLR for under $400 with the lens included, you may want to look at a new Canon T3 for $399 from Amazon. This is a basic, entry level DSLR, but, as a leading DSLR brand, Canon gives you entre to a wide range of lenses and accessories.

Hope this is helpful and best of the holidays to you and yours,

Bill

What kind of lens can I buy with the Canon EOS T1i?

bird.

I have almost $900 to buy a camera from Amazon. I have to get film developed, too, but I was wondering. What is a good lens to get for a T1i? I like macro images, especially in conceptual photography. But I also like landscape photography. What lens would be a good bet? Thanks.

Answer
The T1i with standard 18-55 mm lens costs about $700. The 55-250 mm lens will just nudge your budget a little but worth the extra

What is the best professional camera?

What is the best quality/performance digital SLR camera?
Also, what is the best lens? I primarily do landscape and nature photography, but also like to photograph people too.
I have a canon xsi right now.

Answer
The "best camera" might not be the best camera for you. Indeed the top of the line Nikon and Canon cameras have been listed, though of course Leica probably makes the best cameras and lenses for smaller cameras... but do you really "need" them. For the vast majority of amateurs, a 4 megapixel camera will do fine. That will produce a good 11x14, and maybe even 16x20 if you have correct exposure, etc.

As far as lenses, Leica, Nikon, Canon, Hasselblad, Zeiss, all create great lenses. Other good quality lenses are made by Olympus, Minolta, Fuji, Tamron, Sigma, etc. I'd stay away from other lenses. Even great manufacturers can have a dog lens or two in their inventory. Check out:
DPreview.com
kenrockwell.com
or others.

Landscapes- are frequently created with a wide angle lens in the 18-35 range, though some use telephoto lens.
Nature- will require a lens in the 200-400mm range.
People- 70-200mm is a standard for most portrait photographers.

What are the essentials for photography?

booboo_921

I am getting very serious about photgraphy, and i want to have everything i need to produce great photos..

I have a new camera, the lens that came with the camera, and another lens for landscape shots and such... and i have photoshop... what else do i need? (lighting? other lenses?)

Thanks for the help!
