Will glasses cleaning cloth damage camera lens?

I just got a new DSLR camera recently, and today I noticed a fingerprint on my lens, so I used my glasses cleaning cloth to gently clean it. I'm going to get a proper lens cleaning pen over the weekend, but I'm worried that what I've done today may have damaged the lens. Could it have?

the cloth will not damage the lens. it is grit in the dust that will scratch the delicate lens coating when you wipe. cleaning with air is a first step, while that won't remove a finger print, it will clear out the dust, making it safe to use a more aggressive cleaner.

back in the day, when we used Kodachrome Film, a UV filter was mandatory to keep the exposures from turning blue. And many of us older types can remember an incident where having a filter on the lens saved catastrophic damage. So we mostly continue with the filter routine, and consider the keeping of fingers and dust off the lens as a bonus.

I LOVE my canon powershot XS20 is but I HATE that I have to remove the lens cover every time and it's a pain to get back on! Do they make some kind of little cloth bag that could protect this just as well?

I suspect that would be just as irritating.

The only thing I can suggest is one of those holster camera bags.
The whole camera goes in, nose first, like this....

You could try an ordinary drawstring lens pouch.
It's meant to protect a seperate lens but you could slip it over the lens and pull the string to keep it on.....

is this microfiber cloth good for camera lens?

is this cloth good for my canon powershot sd's lens? (im not going to use the fluid that comes with it)...and i will be using this mostly to take out streaks (from when i cleaned it before) and dust....

When I spent a zillion dollars a couple of months ago at a local Canon dealer, they very nicely gave me an air blow thingie (rubber bulb) and a microfiber cloth (both labeled "Canon"). They seem to work well. The air thing is called hurricane, I think. I keep it in a seal sandwich bag in my camera bag.

You never drop the liquid on the lens--you can do so on the cloth--and just a drop or two (not like soaking the thing wet)--and it should keep your lens nice and shiny. Get a clear UV (don't be cheap on this. I mean don't use a $10 filter on a $2,000 lens) to protect it, too.

Use compressed air to blow away lint and dust first. Then use a microfiber lintless cloth or lens-cleaning tissue to clean the lens, with a drop of lens cleaning fluid if necessary.

If you take care never to touch the surface of a lens, typically all you need to do is blow dust away from time to time. Cleaning with a cloth or tissue is only necessary if you have to remove a fingerprint or something. Always try to get dust and particles blown away first, so that nothing scratches the lens when you rub it with the cloth or tissue.

also, it's a digital camera. i wouldn't even think about touching it... but someone has, and there's an oily fingerprint smack center of the lens >:(

If it's a nice and clean microfiber cloth, or even cotton, then yes. I know of some people wearing glasses that are more expensive than my SLR lens (just the lenses, leave alone the designer frame), so if they can entrust their $1000 glasses to that piece of cloth, why not your lens?

Can I use a shoe mitt to clean my camera lens?

I picked up a shoe mitt from the hotel I was just staying at thinking it might come in handy for cleaning my camera lens. However, I do not want to scratch my lens and I'm not sure if it will or not. If anyone knows whether or not a shoe mitt would be a good lens cleaning tool, could you please let me know? Thanks!

If you never touch your lens, you'll never need to clean it. Use a rocket blocker to remove dust.

If you do need to remove a finger print, use a microfibre cloth specifically for the purpose, they are cheap so why bother with something else?

I can't remember the last time I needed to clean my lenses.
