Will any canon lens fit a rebel? What would be a good lens to start off with?

yes I know nothing lol

Answer
Hi MD Girl. Not all Canon lenses will work on a Rebel digital Specifically.... none of the FD lenses have the same type of mount as do the EF lenses... (by EF, I refer to the electronic focusing lenses that are "electronically" driven when mounted to the camera). I have found out the hard way :(( that not all of the EF lenses will work on every camera either ... and I mostly refer to the one you are asking about... the Rebel. If you use the wrong kind of lens on your camera... you will get an error message and the camera will not take ANY pictures, so when buying a lens, make sure it signifiies that it is designed for your camera. As for a good lens to start off with.... many people will recommend the 50mm, but I don't. You will be happy with a 50mm initially... but after a few shooting trips you will be wanting to take long range shots or maybe very wide angle landscapes and the 50mm is just too restrictive. I recommend and always have in my camera bag a telephoto zoom lens. 18-200mm or 70-210mm gives you many more photo opportunites than does a standard 50mm. And let me pass on another piece of advice since you are in the market for a lens. Always look to see where the lens is manufactured... it is printed somewhere on the lens body. It will say Made in _____ . Your best quality lenses will be made in Japan. I never buy those made in any of the other countries.... and if you compare the two... you will see the difference in the weight and in the craftsmanship. Hope that gives you something to consider. Thanks for reading and happy shopping. :))

I bought a canon xsi and I need help choosing a lens, I'm planning to get a 28-300mm lens, if you can point out the advantages and disadvantages on the camera lens it would be so great.

Answer
Don't get something with such a huge focal length range. Making a lens that can cover such a range means that they have to make a lot of sacrifices in image quality. Also, most photography happens in the 20-100mm rang so there's no point having a physically huge lens on your camera when most of your photography doesn't require it. The whole benefit of SLRs is that you can switch lenses.

How many camera lens do you need?

Jenna:))

Hello, I have a canon DSLR and I have the 18-135mm standard zoom lens. I love it, I've taken some great pictures with it. Thing is, I want to take pictures of wildlife and landscape. So do I need a new camera lens for those?

Answer
For wildlife, most definitely, Animals are notoriously skittish when it comes to people. You want to have access to at least the equivalent of a 400mm lens on a 35 mm camera (longer if you can afford it). You could probably get by with the 18mm focal length on your kit lens for landscapes. Though eventually you might want to get a better lens. (nothing wrong with your lens, but there are ALWAYS better lenses available!)

For landscapes, you might want to try panorama photos, where you take several photos in sequence but with each photo, the lens is moved a little before the shot is taken showing more and more of the landscape as the lens sweeps to the left or right in increments.

Then, if you are very consistent in exposure and focus, you can use special software called a stitching application, which will electronically 'cut and paste' the multiple photos into a single large photo.

An excellent free application for this purpose is called Hugin Photo Stitcher you can find it on Sourceforge here:http://hugin.sourceforge.net/

Good luck!

the difference between these two canon lenses?

Buying a 550d just for video, can anyone tell me the difference besides the aperture for the

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens
and Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM Standard & Medium Telephoto Lens

i know i will get more light with the 1.4 but is the usm significant for video, is shelling out an extra 200$ necessary?

Answer
plastic vs metal
also, the 1.4 is weather resistant.

It is interesting to me that these DSLRs get 20gigs/hr for a video data rate, much better than HD camcorders at 11 gigs. Seems like they should be on par or better than the 13 gigs/hour from MiniDv.

It just seems the file size limits (4 gigs/15 minutes), poor audio, and minimal battery life as well as the wear and tear from both holding the mirror up and the shutter open would turn people away from their use as a primary video camera.

And have you looked into how their compression works with action? The interpreted frame compression may still cause lags, jumps, and mosquitoes although not nearly as bad as 11 gig HD.

I have gone head to head with expensive HD camcorders with my GL-2 and I can up-convert to 1920 x 1080 with better image clarity, by a very noticeable margin.

I am just guessing here, but I'd bet good money that DSLR video would be hard to distinguish from MiniDv, with perhaps a slight edge going to MiniDv in action, and a slight edge going to DSLR with more of a static shot. Audio would excel with the uncompressed audio in MiniDv and aux mics. The versatility of a 20X optical lens, better image processing (Triple CCD) and the GL can shoot tape after tape without break, and with the bigger battery, can shoot for several hours (I've done all day time lapse work).

Anyway, where $1000 gets you a new DSLR and lens, you have to hunt for a good used GL-2 for that price (I've seen them as low as $600 for the GL-1).

As long as you are aware of the limitations, the 550 is a great camera.

what is the best setting for a photoshoot on a canon rebel xt?

dylan

I have basic camera lens for the canon rebel xt, does anyone know good settings on the camera that would help enhance and make a photoshoot look nicer?

Answer
There is no setting to do that... it is the skill and knowledge of the photographer. There are many settings that can be used, and which works best depends entirely on the situation. The camera is a totally dumb box. It is only an instrument that can only perform as well as the person "playing" it.

(By the way, one answer told you to put it in the green box and that would be full manual. Wrong. That is full automatic and I do NOT recommend that. At least put the camera in P mode to allow you to determine things such as when the flash goes off or not).

Honestly, here is the best thing you can do for yourself at this point if you REALLY want to learn to make good photos and know how to use your equipment the way it was intended:
