What dSLR camera and lens to buy?

Nakkiel

I am just starting out with photography as a hobby, so I am not really sure what I need. I do need a dSLR camera for a class I will be taking, but am not sure what features/lenses I really need, whether extra expenses are worth it for a beginner, etc.

Cameras I am considering:
Nikon D3100
Canon EOS Rebel T2i
Nikon D5100
Canon EOS 60D

Which brand would you suggest and why? Obviously the top 2 are much cheaper, so is the more expensive of each worth it for a beginner? Also are the kit lenses good enough or would I be better off getting just body and a separate lens? And what size (Or zoom range) lens should I be using? (Canon offers size choices of kit lens. If separate what are some good lens choices?)

I know this is a lot of questions in one, but any advice would help.
Ty for the advice. Especially on sensor size, but the D7k is way out of my price range. My budget is only around 800. Maybe up to 1k if the upgrades are really worth it. Obviously if I don't actually need the features for any good reason I would prefer to pay less though.

Nikon D5100 w/ lens kit is only $50 over my budget, but if getting body only with ~ a $200 lens ($100 more than kit lens) would be worth it for whatever reason I am willing to do that. I really don't know what size lens I need to start out though, and aperture (The listed f/#) just completely confuses me. Would it be bad to get a lens that list a single f/# rather than a range, or is it just listing the maximum? And what aperture should I get?

Answer
Of the four, the Nikon D5100 provides the best sensor performance, however since you included the Canon 60D, you will want to look at the Nikon D7000 which competes directly with it.

Here is how the sensors of the Nikon D7000, Canon 06D and Nikon D5100 compare.

The reason you may want to consider the Nikon D7000 has to do with the increased number of Nikkor lenses available for your use. You can use the older, less expensive Nikkor AF lenses with the D7000

The "lens kits" are to get the new photographer started, learning how to use a fully adjustable camera with the least expense.

In reality, which camera you buy will be up to your total budget you have set aside for your camera "system"

Here is a link to the number of available Nikon lenses and what the angle of view of each of them.

Answer
It is usually better to buy a better lens and lessor camera.

Why?

You will be upgrading your camera every four or five years.

Each lens you buy you only want to buy one time

I suggest you buy a nice Canon T3/1100D with a Canon EF 70-300 mm lens (NOT the Canon 75-300 mm lens)

Should buy a new camera or lens?

vivee

I'm thinking to buy a Nikon D800 or a 14-24mm lens, I've a D300s right now, but due to the budget I can only afford one of them...

Does anyone can give me a suggestion on which one I should buy?

Answer
lens last forever. but if you see something that d800 has in improving your image quality, that its worth going camera rather than lens.
i am thinking on upgrading because new camera has higher than 1600 iso, new camera will give me flexibility of max 25600 iso,

What is the best zoom lens for canon EOS 50D?

I don't have enough knowledge about camera lens. I just bought a new canon camera EOS 50D. I am also planning to buy zoom lens but I have no idea what is the best lens for EOS 50D. Your recommendation is highly appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
For the 50D you will need a 'good' lens if you want excellent image quality. A cheap telephoto lens is not a good idea for a camera like this, so don't even think about getting a budget one that only costs a couple of hundred dollars or so, because it won't deliver on image quality and will not be good enough for lower lighting. One with a wider (faster) aperture of f/2.8 is an excellent choice.

From the Canon lens/camera review site below (of the 50D)...
"Because the quality of the lens makes a big difference in the image quality delivered by a DSLR - especially one with the resolution of the 50D, I recommend buying (now or later), one of the better Canon general purpose lenses available. At this review date, the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens is my most-recommended 1.6x lens with the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens and the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM Lens being excellent alternatives."

Another excellent lens with a longer starting focal length is the EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L, with or without IS or the f/4 version with or without IS.

Check out the links below for reviews of all the lenses above (and the 50D) and other lenses...

What does it mean when a camera lens has a fixed aperture?

Danny

I'm looking into buying a bigger camera lens, and I keep on seeing lenses that have a fixed aperture and some that don't. What does that even mean?

Answer
First you need to understand what aperture is: It is the ratio of the length of the lens to the diameter of the lens- thus the larger the aperture (the smaller the number, the larger the aperture) the more light will pass through the lens. This means faster shutter times are possible since more light comes through the lens.

Now, in zoom lenses keeping this ration constant, a "Fixed Aperture", requires very specialised engineering which makes the lens more expensive. However such a lens is far better in low light conditions and tends to be much better engineered than one with a variable aperture/ With a variable aperture as you extend the zoom the aperture gets smaller and less light gets through the lens. This means exposure, shutter speeds etc need to change as you change the zoom on the lens- making using the lens more difficult as you have to vary settings more frequently.

Can you list camera lens brands from best to worst?

I bought a canon xsi and I need help choosing a lens, I'm planning to get a 28-300mm lens, if you can point out the advantages and disadvantages on the camera lens it would be so great.

Answer
Don't get something with such a huge focal length range. Making a lens that can cover such a range means that they have to make a lot of sacrifices in image quality. Also, most photography happens in the 20-100mm rang so there's no point having a physically huge lens on your camera when most of your photography doesn't require it. The whole benefit of SLRs is that you can switch lenses.

What website is best for buying smart phone replacement parts?

yahooey

I have an HTC Merge. I dropped it & broke the camera lens. I want to buy a new lens to replace the broken one.

Answer
I would say check Amazon, the company that you have the phone with or the manufacture. If you have insurance, they might cover it from either the phone company or manufacture.
My youngest son broke my daughter's phone and the manufacture cover the phone no problem and I didn't have to pay anything but shipping.
