Telescope for Astrophotography?

I'm looking to find a telescope that can be used for astrophotography. I have a Nikon D90 DSLR. I'm on a limited budget and I'm wondering what I need to get started. I am looking to get some telescope recommendations and it sounds like I'll need an equatorial mount and a tracker. Any suggestions are welcome. I'd like to do some deep sky images. If anyone can give me a list of what I'll need I would appreciate it.

This is going to be long, since astrophotography is several levels more complex than either using a telescope by itself or regular photography.

One of the easier ways to get started is with your camera only mounted on a tripod. This allows you to start with "star trail" astrophotography. Simply point the camera towards Polaris and leave the shutter open for a period of time. Granted, this is a pretty easy step, but it gets you into the basics.

Next, you can build a simple platform called a "Barn Door Tracker" (also known as a "Scotch Mount")
At its simplest, it is nothing more than two pieces of wood that are hinged together that have a threaded screw and a ball socket for the camera. These are good for up to around five minutes worth of tracking.

For your camera, you will need a little device called an intervalometer. This controls the camera's shutter time and number exposers without you touching the camera. something like this -

For lenses, it is usually better to use prime lenses (non-zoom) and something that you can manually focus. You have zero need for flash, auto-focusing, or automatic exposer control. What I use are the older, but still very good 35mm film camera lenses. Mostly these have a Pentax screw mount (M42) which you purchase an adapter plate that goes between your camera and the lens.

Now comes the tricky parts -
You need to focus the camera to infinity, but the infinity marker on most lenses is not true infinity. You can either figure this out for yourself (time consuming) or do a simple depth of focus adjustment. This is where you stop the camera down about two stops and bracket the infinity between the width of the depth of focus.

For ISO settings, stay within about 200 to 800. Anything higher and the imager chip (CCD or CMOS) will begin showing noise and amplifier glow.

Exposer times of course are going to be different, depending on your target. But one great trick you can do to help improve you image quality is a process called "image stacking". This is where you take a bunch of short length exposers and then have a software program add them together. Programs that do this are -

Finally, back to your original question about telescopes and astrophotography -
Its all about the mount that everything sits on. It needs to be steady, have tracking and sturdy. It can not have any shaking or wobbling, it should only move when you want it to move (you don't want the mount to start drooping while the shutter is open). the mount and tripod should handle at least twice the weight of the telescope, camera and anything else attached to it. Basically, you want mass, lots of mass.

Finally, down to the telescope - The better way to go would be with a apochromatic refractor or wide field reflector. The refractor would be more expensive, but would give you better results.

What would be a great lens for astrophotography?

I have a D3100 and I want to get into basic astrophotography. I was wondering what a decent lens would be for doing such? Could I do it with the basic lens that comes with the camera? And, if anybody knows, how long of a shutter speed should I use? Without a motorized tripod I do realize that the stars will be blurred but should I use a 10 minute? 20 minute? 3 hour exposure? Please reply. Thanks!

Depends what you want to do in astrophotography, if you just want star-trails then a 50mm lens is OK for the wide view, if you want to 'get closer' then you need a telescope with a T ring mount for your Nikon, they are surprisingly cheap.

Attaching any DSLR to a Newtonian isn't strait forward, often they wont focus on infinity as the lens mount to sensor distance is too long. The cure is either to move the mirror up the telescope tube or to use a Barlow lens which often comes with the telescope

Exposure times will be long, there is the '600 rule', if you want to expose with no discernible star movement then you divide the focal length of your lens into 600 and the result is the shutter time in seconds for pin-point stars. As an example a 50mm lens is 600/50 = 12, so you can have a 12 second exposure and still have no noticeable star movement, a 150mm lens would be 600/150 = 4 seconds and so on.

If you want to fill your image with a wide view of the Milky Way then you need to observe the 600 rule or to use a motorised mount, lots of shorter exposures stacked will be better than one long exposure, you will have to increase ISO to record anything with these shorter shutter times. By stacked I mean to use stacking software to align and and super impose the images and to get the most detail from all the images, a little like an auto composite, this can 'magically' get loads of detail, but you will need to experiment.

For all these a Dark Sky site in the middle of nowhere works best, it's very difficult to do well in the light polluted skies of a City.

Photographing the Moon is a lot easier as the Moon is brighter than you think, the usual exposure for the Moon is 1/125th of a second at f8 and an ISO of 100, pretty much the same as a terrestrial shot. To fill the frame with the Moon on a 35mm film sized sensor you need a 2600mm lens to get the half a degree field of view that the Moon covers. The Moon moves it's own diameter every 5 minutes (Lunar time).

Telescopes offer a cheap way to get these long lenses, my Sky-watcher 130 Newtonian is the equivalent of a 650mm f4 lens! For around £200 complete with motorised equatorial mount a couple of eyepieces and heavy tripod, a pretty good deal. Use the supplied 2X Barlow lens and you have a 1200mm f8. You can mount your camera directly to this motorised mount and get pin sharp long exposures with the wide field of view. All in all a pretty good investment.

Should I wait for the Canon 550D?

Hey guys,

I really need help and fast. :(
I was considering of buying a canon 500d with a 70-200mm f/4 L glass lens and it was JUST under my budget... Now I read about canon announcing a newer model and I'm so confused.
19th feb I will be going on holiday to Dubai, which is a once in a lifetime thing for me. I really wish I could capture many many photos there but the 550d will only be available by the 24th!

I know that lenses are waaay more (and if not, the only) imporant thing and not the body. And that investing in a lens (especially an L lens) is better and bodies come and go...

I really appreciate any help/advice.

Review: My journey with DSLRs began back in 2003 with the original Digital Rebel. DSLRs changed my photography for the better like nothing else. Five years and some 25,000 shots later, it's still going strong. Along the way I upgraded to the Canon 30D, which is a fantastic camera as well. When the 40D was announced, I decided to wait until the 50D sometime in 2009, but wanted a newer backup/second body for my photography needs. So when the XSi/450D was announced, it sounded like a perfect fit for my needs.

I got it from Amazon.com three days ago, and have given it a pretty good workout since then, having shot about 650 shots under a variety of shooting conditions and with a number of different Canon and third-party lenses. The following are my impressions.

The build feels very good. The camera feels wonderfully light yet well built. I'm 6ft tall with average size hands, and the camera feels good in my hand. The battery grip, to me, defeats the purpose of having a small, light DSLR, so I opted for a Hakuba/Opteka grip (it's a plate that screws into the tripod socket that enables you to use the excellent Canon E1 hand strap with it) and I couldn't be happier. I'm not a fan of neck straps, so this works well for me (see the uploaded photo for the configuration).

Most of the menu buttons on the back feel different from the ones on the original Digital Rebel and the 30D; the XSi buttons feel more tactile and have a definite "click" to them when you press them. The exception are the Exposure Lock (*) and AF selector buttons, which have retained the deeper, softer feel of the older cameras. Just different, not better or worse, for me.

The LCD is now 3" with 230K pixels. The playback images look great, and probably because of the higher resolution of the sensor, there's a very slight delay when you zoom in to 10x while the image loads and displays properly. People coming from other cameras or brands might not even notice it--I only did so because of the difference between it and my two other Canon DSLRs (which have lower resolution sensors). The viewing angle of the LCD screen (how clearly you can see the screen from side and up and down) is excellent; you can still see the screen holding the camera almost straight up for an overhead shot (more on this later). I'd estimate the viewing angle is about 160-170 degrees both horizontally and vertically.

The Digital Rebel has a separate status screen above the main LCD screen, and the 30D had one on top of the camera, so I wasn't sure if I was going to like the big LCD acting as the status screen and no top screen. I'm happy to say that this arrangement works well, at least for me. The back screen makes it really easy to take all the settings at a glance. The viewfinder is much larger and brighter than that in the Digital Rebel. A humongously welcome feature for me is the always displayed ISO value in the viewfinder.

The camera is only 1/2 of the image quality equation, the other being the lenses being used. Coupled with my favorite lens, the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L telephoto lens, the XSi turns out fantastic images. The supplied kit lens is very light and compact for being an image stabilized lens, and turns out good performance. The IS is certainly very useful.

Two features that used to be missing from the Digital Rebels and found in the more expensive DSLRs are now featured in the XSi: spot-metering and flash exposure compensation (these may have been available in the previous Digital Rebel model, the XTi, as well). The inclusion of those two features make the camera a much more complete and compelling photographic tool. The timer function now has a custom mode, where it'll count down from 10 seconds then take a number of shots (specified by you) in succession. No more running back and forth to reset the timer after each shot! There's also the traditional 2-second timer.

Let's talk for a minute about sensor and the ISO values. XSi/450D has five ISO values you can choose: 100 (best image quality), 200, 400, 800, and 1600. Higher ISO increases the camera sensor's sensitivity to light, thus you can achieve faster shutter speeeds for a given lighting condition. However, the trade-off is that the sensor "noise" (think grain for film photography) increases with higher ISO, so you get a degraded image quality in return for less blurred photos from hand shakes (thanks to faster shutter speed). This may come in handy in situations where flash photography is not permitted, such as a museum or a concert or theater. HOWEVER, compared to point-and-shoot digital cameras, the larger sensors of DSLRs, including the XSi, means that even at ISO 800 and 1600 you get very usable images right out of the camera. Best Quality Lens For Canon EOS 550D?

I am a fashion photographer and at the moment im using just the lens that came with body, the 18-55mm. But as I'm getting more into my work, I'm getting increasingly annoyed with the quality of the lens. Quality is grainy and blurs easily. So I'm just wondering what a really good lens for this camera would be? Is the 85mm, 24-70mm or 50mm any good?

yes most lenses with an ;l; in the lens would be a major upgrade, but some of the older ones are horrific for todays standards, you could get a simple £80 f/1.8 50mm canon lens, this is a good cheap lens and is vastly better than your kit lens, there is a shallower depth of field, and even with a 5 blade, unrounded diaphram blades the bokeh is nice and smooth open wide, and with all the tack sharpness a prime lens should have. A good multipurpose lens which is popular for a reason in the proffesinal lens series, of 'l' are the 24-105mm f/4 lens and the 24-70mm f2.8 lens

there is now a mark ii for the 24-70mm, if money is not an object, this lens is fantastic, and pin sharp as a prime at any length or apeture, but at around £1600

a good cheaper 'l' lens is the 70-200mm f/4 fantastic image quality for around £300 alot cheaper than the other two
